    #How to Repaint Kitchen Cabinets

Quick home fixups: Refinish your kitchen cabinets with new hardware and paint

    By Joanne Liebeler

I once bought a house whose kitchen was darker than a Chekhov play. The cabinets were dirty brown. The wallpaper was faded and spotted with grease. I knew I had to lighten up that space before I moved in a single dish. So I painted the cabinets―instant transformation!

Many of us have cabinets in good condition, but the finish is cringe-inducing. Fortunately, there’s an easy, albeit time-consuming, fix that doesn’t involve taking a sledgehammer to the room. You can paint the cabinets any color you like and top them off with new hardware.

Before you get too excited, you need to make sure your cabinets are paintable.

Solid wood, wood veneer, and metal cabinets take paint well, but laminate and melamine finishes do not.

If this is what you have, there is still a way to give them a face-lift, but it’s best don ... Read more »

    #How to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets

    Before

It looks hopeless, but with new doors and enameled cabinet boxes you can create a whole new kitchen without the huge expense of replacing everything.

You'll be amazed at how simple it is to update your kitchen without tearing out your old cabinets and completely remodeling. By repainting the cabinets and installing new doors, you can achieve a whole new look at a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. To achieve our dramatic new look, we took off the old doors and painted the cabinet frames with a black, satin-finish oil paint. Then we hung slightly larger cherry panel doors with concealed “Euro-style” hinges. This reduced the space between the doors and eliminated hinge clutter for a more contemporary look.

Our kitchen design combines classic and contemporary elements for a fresh, eclectic look that blends well with many home styles, but these techniques work great to create any style you like. For a more traditiona ... Read more »

#How to Reface and Refinish Kitchen Cabinets

Reface Sides, Drawers and Doors with Veneer and Stain

Start by removing the cabinet doors, drawers and all hardware. Flat-front doors and drawers are easily refaced, but if yours have raised panels, routed profiles or other architectural detailing, you can opt to buy new unfinished doors and drawers and stain them along with your cabinets.

Sand the side and front surfaces of the old cabinets. It s not necessary to sand off all the old finish, just rough it up so the new wood veneer will adhere properly.

Practice your veneering technique on less-visible areas first, such as on a side panel. Apply a thin film of wood glue to the cabinet surface and use a nail gun with 5/8-inch brads to fix the veneer panel in place. Adjust the nailer to sink the brad heads just below the veneer surface. Nail from top to bottom to avoid creating a bubble in the middle of the panel (Image 1).

When all side panels are in plac ... Read more »

How to Install New Kitchen Cabinets | how-tos | DIY

DK - Do It Yourself Home Improvement, 2009 Dorling Kindersley Limited

Take time to prepare the wall surfaces and assemble the kitchen cabinets before installing them. Drawing the first guide line for positioning cabinets is essential to the success of the whole project. Cabinets and countertops are heavy items, and you will need someone to help you lift them into position.

    Laying Out Cabinets

    • The starting point for installing any kitchen is a level guide line for the top of the base cabinets. A height of about 34-1/2 above the floor is standard. The countertop is added later.
  • Start in one corner, using a level to guide you. Older floors can be uneven, so check the line’s height at intervals to make sure base cabinets and appliances will fit beneath it comfortably along the entire length.
  • Mark a second line to show the thickness of the countertop. Generally, wall ... Read more »

Kitchen Worktops: Find Kitchen Worktops and Splashbacks Online

Solid wood worktops are available in a wide range of patterns and tones, ranging from pale birch to rich oak worktops. Wood is an eco-friendly worktop choice and offers hygienic, anti-bacterial properties, and is easy to repair. Wood can scratch and mark more easily than other worktops, which can be treated by sanding an oiling to improve durability.

The classic chefs' choice, stainless steel worktops are hygienic, waterproof and heat resistant. If you favour an industrial looking kitchen, stainless steel is the ideal choice and also a very affordable option in a range of polished or matte finishes. Stainless steel surfaces do scratch easily and can't be used for cutting, so adding a butcher's block is a great way to add texture and enhance the industrial theme.

Laminate surfaces are inexpensive, available in a range of options, and easy to maintain. High quality laminate worktops will have greater durab ... Read more »

#How to Replace a Kitchen Faucet

Pick up key parts at the hardware store before you start

Photo 1: Remove the drain lines from the faucet

Disconnect the drain lines and P-traps if they block your access to the faucet and water supply pipes. (Place a bucket or coffee can under the P-trap to dump residual water after you pull it free.)

Chances are, you’ll need to make more than one trip to the hardware store for parts, but to give yourself a fighting shot at completing the job with one-stop shopping, consult this list.

    • Shutoff valves: Before you shop for your new faucet (see “Selecting a Faucet” at the end of this article), take a look under the sink and make sure that there are shutoff valves feeding the faucet. If you don’t have shutoff valves, add them. If you have them, confirm that they’re in working order by turning on the hot and cold water at the faucet and shutting off the valves. If the faucet still drips, install ... Read more »

    Magic Kitchen ( ) (2004)

It wouldn't be Lunar New Year if reigning QOBO (Queen of the Box Office) Sammi Cheng didn't take her usual stab at box office supremacy. The 2004 entry: Magic Kitchen. produced by those ultra-commercial mavens at Media Asia, and directed by long-lost Lost and Found director Lee Chi-Ngai. The film boasts an eclectic supporting cast, including Maggie Q, Nicola Cheung, Stephen Fung, Daniel Wu, both the Beast Cops (Anthony Wong and Michael Wong), and usual Sammi Cheng co-star Andy Lau. However, the male lead is Jerry Yan of Taiwanese pop juggernaut F4, a curious choice given his obvious big-screen inexperience and lack of Cantonese fluency. But, when you consider the fact that Jerry Yan and Sammi Cheng are both spokespersons for Pepsi, it all suddenly makes sense. Once again, marketing shows us the way!

#How to Replace a Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer

    Unscrew the locknut

Apply putty and reset the basket

Roll plumber’s putty between your hands into a rope the size of a pencil and wrap it around the lip of the drain opening. Press the strainer firmly down into the putty, add the rubber gasket, friction ring and locknut under the sink, and retighten the locknut.

If you discover a puddle of water in the cabinet under your sink, it may be caused by a leaky basket strainer. Old plumbing fittings can be tricky to loosen, but we’ll show you how to tear them apart and put them back together without any strain. You can pick up all the necessary supplies at a hardware store or home center.

To be sure the leak is coming from the basket strainer instead of a pipe joint, test the basket for leaks as shown in Photo 1. Once you confirm that the basket strainer is leaking, begin the removal process (Photo 2). Photo 3 shows how to remove the strainer locknut, which ... Read more »

Kitchen Ideas for Low Ceilings | eHow

Low kitchen ceilings can make the room feel dark and cave-like. Without resorting to a major renovation, there are some design choices that will help your kitchen feel more open, the walls appear taller, and the ceiling higher. Playing with color, lighting and patterns can achieve the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Get rid of any architectural details in the kitchen that run horizontally, except for the counters, of course. If the kitchen has a chair rail, remove it to give the walls a longer look. The chair rail and other horizontal design elements cut the wall into sections, making it appear shorter from floor to ceiling. Thick baseboards and crown molding will also shorten the walls.

A white or very light-colored ceiling will make it appear higher. A paint with a slight sheen will reflect light even more, giving the room an airy, open feel. The rest of the room should be painted or wall-papered a slightly darker color than the ... Read more »

What Are the Different Types of DIY Kitchen Projects?

    15,7,17,10,9,13,16,12,14,8

The different types of DIY kitchen projects will vary according to the homeowner's skill level when it comes to carpentry and other skills necessary to complete common construction tasks. Projects may range from the very simple, such as purchasing storage bins and organizing them in cabinets, to more advanced projects such as installing or replacing cabinets and countertops. Building an island is a more involved task, especially if the island will feature plumbing, electricity, or any hook-ups for kitchen utilities. DIY kitchen projects are usually less expensive than hiring a contractor, but they will be more time consuming.

One of the most common DIY kitchen projects is installing a backsplash. A backsplash is mounted on the wall above a stove, sink, or around the perimeter of a countertop. The purpose of this unit is to protect the wall from moisture and food splatters common during ... Read more »

#How to Remove Kitchen Grease on Ceiling Fan Blades

Ceiling fan blades in a kitchen suffer from greasy buildup.

    The Prep Work

Before cleaning the ceiling fan blades, it's helpful to get everything ready, including yourself, to avoid multiple trips up the stepladder. Place newspaper on the floor beneath the fan area if it has been a long time since the fan has been cleaned; globs of dust may fall off as you wipe the blades. Tape the ceiling fan switch down temporarily if children in the house may flip its wall switch on as you work. Gather extra supplies such as spare rags, paper towels and all the cleaners you'll need, setting them up on the stepladder's tray for instant access. Finally, wear eye protection or even a bandanna over your head to ensure that none of that greasy fan gunk ends up in your eyes or on your head.

That got me thinking back to the exactly opposite, wonderful experience I had with KTU tuning up my inherited 1960 s kitchen. With KTU it s a collaboration with folks who know what they re doing, and employ workmen who are on time and skillful. From initial consultation, to choice of materials, to installation, to follow-ups, the whole process (which can take a while) was professional and the results are exactly what I wanted. Beautiful kitchen: check.

We had used Kitchen Tune-Up back in 2009 when we bought and remodeled our house. They did a great job so when we decided to add on some cabinets and counter top this past summer we decided to go back to Kitchen Tune-Up.  It was much more difficult trying to schedule any of ... Read more »

#Ideas for the Kitchen: Renew Kitchen Countertops

    COST

    Overview

Rust-Oleum’s new Countertop Transformations coating system (available at home centers and some hardware stores) is a simple way to transform worn or damaged laminate countertops into a new countertop surface. The product is available in five colors ranging from light to very dark (for this project we chose Charcoal).

The big pluses of this system are it’s not smelly or difficult, you don’t have to remove your countertops (!), the instructions are clear, and the kit comes with everything you need (except basic painting tools), plus it includes a very detailed DVD. This product can be applied to any laminate or hardwood countertop in reasonable condition. Burns and scratches are fine, but fill deep dents and chips before you use it.

After using this product, we can report that it’s surprisingly easy to apply. In terms of durability, the manufacturer compares it to laminate. We can’t sp ... Read more »

#How To Update Outdated Oak Kitchen Cabinets?

Q: My husband and I will soon be closing on our dream house in the country. Sadly, it does not come with a dream kitchen the cabinets are oak and I hate them. My hubby thinks they are the bee's knees. My husband will not allow any painting and/or staining of these cabinets under any circumstances. He's given me complete decorative freedom over the rest of the house, so it's only fair to comply with this one hideous wish. So, I'm left to try to decorate around the cabinets.

We don't have a huge budget and will not be able to replace the countertops right away because the flooring is priority. I'm thinking a muted blue on the walls and thick-striped black and white rug for a more modern look. He did agree to let me paint the trim (around doors, baseboards, etc.) white to match the rest of the house. Possibly black or brushed nickel hardware? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, think less ... Read more »

    #How to Spray Latex Paint

By Jennifer Stimpson. This Old House magazine

    Photo: Kolin Smith

The fastest way to get the smoothest finish with latex paint is to use an airless paint sprayer, which you can rent for less than $100 a day. (Other sprayers are less expensive but require you to thin the paint to a precise consistency.) As you follow these spraying guidelines, be sure to wear a disposable respirator and cover anything in the vicinity that you don't want paint droplets to land on.

Prime the sprayer. Fit the gun with the proper-sized tip (see TOH Tip, below). Then stick the sprayer's siphon tube in a clean bucket of paint, and fill the sprayer, hose, and gun according to the instruction manual.

Set the pressure. Turn the sprayer's pressure-Вadjustment knob to the lowest setting recommended by the paint manufacturer. Hold the gun 12 to 14 inches away from a scrap piece of cardboard or paper and spray a test lin ... Read more »

Kitchen Cabinetry: Find Kitchen Cabinets Online

This depends largely on your budget and overall style. Consider the following when making your decision:

Stock: Manufactured in a limited number of widths, options and materials, stock cabinets are the least expensive and may require filler strips to disguise spaces between cabinets and walls. However, there is still a wide variety available, and the quality can be just as high as custom.

Semi-custom: More expensive than stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets are made-to-order with a wider variety of options available, like drawers with slide-outs or odd sizes. However, they’re not custom-made, so they’re not limitless.

Custom-made: Created exactly to your specifications, custom-made cabinets tend to come with a steep price tag. Often, it’s worth it: Built for your kitchen, these cabinets will maximize your space in terms of efficiency and design.

#I need to buy a kitchen. Life in Germany - Toytown Germany

    laurenk 2

    Posted 14 Jun 2012

First off, I currently live in the States, so it's next to impossible to find a kitchen without looking at it. Second, I finally found an apartment, and *thought* I'd be able to buy the kitchen off the current renter. but she sold it to her aunt's boyfriend after she said she'd sell it to the next renter. So now I'm up the creek without a paddle.

So, I have a few questions.

    1. I've found, by searching online for the past few hours, that most kitchens (that claim to be complete) come without fridges/ovens/etc. How can one ensure one is finding a *complete* (WITH fridge/oven/sink/etc) kitchen?

    2. Where (aside from IKEA) can one locate a complete kitchen (or where would you recommend I look)? I'll arrive in Germany (NRW) in 3 weeks and can't get the apartment until 15 July.

    3. What is a 'fair' price (or 'typical' price) for a compl ... Read more »

    #How to update kitchen cupboards

Cupboards painted with spray paint by Plasti Kote .

    Fit new handles

If there’s nothing drastically wrong with the kitchen units, your cheapest option is to replace the cupboard and drawer handles. This is an easy DIY job andmakes a huge difference. Wooden button knobs suit country kitchens while chrome bar handles add an urban edge. Stay contemporary with a leather design or go retro with quirky cupcake or ladybird knobs. For help, read our handy guide on how to change door and drawer handles .

    Preparation work

If you’re bored with the colour of your cupboards, why not paint them? This does require a bit of time and effort but a change of colour can transform tired cabinets. Before painting, unscrew handles with a screwdriver. You can remove cupboard doors, but painting them in situ is better as you can do both sides, the top and bottom in one go and you won't have to rehang them.

    Kitchen Tongs

There are two kinds of Kitchen Tongs.

One type is made from two pieces of heavy wire joined like scissors; the other is two pieces of light metal joined at the end, usually with a spring as well. That being said, the material doesn't have to be metal: it can be metal and plastic, plastic, wood or bamboo.

Plastic ones are fine for salads, buffets, salad bars, etc.

Kitchen Tongs come in different lengths. Long-handled ones are particularly important when cooking over an open flame or splattering grease, because they mean your hands don't need to come near danger.

Scissor-type ones are fine for smaller pieces of food. To use them, you have to slide one finger through a hole in one of the handles, as you do for scissors.

Tongs whose holding ends have scalloped food-gripping parts can allow a more stable grip when lifting large items.

#How to Spray Paint Kitchen Cabinets

    Overview

    New-looking cabinets in 3 steps

Clean the old cabinets thoroughly, prime with a stain-blocking primer, and then paint with a high-quality latex enamel.

You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on new cabinets to give your kitchen a stunning new look. If your cabinets are in good shape, you can give them a fresh face with paint. Everything you need to give your drab cabinets a silky smooth painted finish costs less than $250—including the sprayer.

Professional painters typically spray-paint doors because it produces an ultra-smooth finish. In this article, we’ll show you how to spray-paint your doors and drawers. There’s just a short learning curve to use the sprayer effectively. You could also spray the cabinet frames, sides and trim, but masking off the cabinet openings (and the rest of the kitchen) takes a lot of time, so just use a brush for those areas.

#Inexpensive Way to Change the Appearance of Kitchen Cabinets

Removing some cabinet doors gives the cabinets a new look.

    Awash in Color

Paint offers one of the most dramatic changes for cabinets; a new color completely transforms the look of both the cabinets and the room as a whole, since these often cover a large area of wall space. If the cabinets are already painted, give them a shabby-chic makeover by rubbing them down with candle wax, painting a new color over the wax, then sanding away some of the paint to reveal hints of the original shade. For a color wash, mix latex paint with clear latex glaze, then brush on the mixture, rubbing most of the glaze off with a rag. Give them a raw silk finish instead by rubbing steel wool through the wet glaze, working in parallel columns. For the ultimate bargain, search the "mis-tint" shelf at the paint store for paint shades that did not come out exactly as another customer requested. These are sold highly disc ... Read more »

#Ikea has created the kitchen of 2025

IKEA didn't just imagine the kitchen of the future. It actually built it.

The Concept Kitchen 2025, a pop-up exhibit featured at EXPO Milano 2015, isn't about your kitchen and its appliances doing all the work for you; it's about helping you make thoughtful decisions about food and waste.

Innovations are everywhere. And much conventional thinking about what a kitchen actually requires has been thrown out the window. This is the kitchen reimagined for a time when the Internet of Things defines our lives.

The kitchen was developed with IDEO London, a global design firm, and college students focused on "the social, technological, and demographic forces that will impact how we behave around food in 2025." Check out all the bells and whistles below.

Welcome to 2025. This is what your kitchen looks like.

    #How to Tile a Backsplash

    COST

Project overview: Planning, materials and tools

Nothing packs more style per square inch than mosaic tile. So if your kitchen's got the blahs, give it a quick infusion of pizzazz with a tile backsplash. Because the small tiles are mounted on 12 x 12-in. sheets, installation is fast. You can install the tile on Saturday and then grout it on Sunday.

Professionals charge about $20 per sq. ft. for installing the tile (plus materials), so you'll save $20 for every sheet you install yourself. The sheets cost $8 to more than $20 each at home centers and tile stores.

The total cost for our backsplash was about $200. Our sheets cost $10 apiece plus adhesive and grout. For an 8-ft. backsplash, you could save about $45 by using a less expensive tile. We chose slate tiles, which sometimes crumble when you cut them. Other types of mosaic tile, especially ceramic tiles, are easier to cut.

#Ideas for the Kitchen: Cabinet Door Inserts

Step 1: Decide on new door inset material

Installing new panels in old cabinet doors can really dress up a kitchen (and new panels are a lot cheaper than new cabinets). Insert materials include glass, translucent plastic, copper, metal, fabric, wicker and many others. Adding “feature” inserts to just one or two of your cabinet doors can be striking and very inexpensive. Our homeowners decided to install perforated metal inserts in all of their upper cabinet doors. They initially wanted to use stainless steel to match their appliances, but went with aluminum after discovering that it costs a third of the price and has a similar look (see “Buying Metal Inserts,” below, for tips on ordering).

If it’s impossible to find the jar of honey, because of all of the spices and canned goods, then you might need some more shelving. A shelf organizer can give you the space you need. #How to Tile Your Kitchen Backsplash in One Day

Tiling a Kitchen Backsplash in One Day

Everyone loves instant gratification. One problem with kitchen remodeling, though, is that gratification is often achieved slowly and laboriously.

So, for the sake of your sanity, you sometimes need to dip your hand into projects that can be finished quickly and offer eye-popping results. Backsplashes are just that kind of project: fast, beautiful, practical, and yes, instantly gratifying.

    Why Backsplashes Stand Out

Spend a weekend painting a ceiling, and people never notice. Replace your windows to the tune of several thousand dollars, and guests politely say, “Hmm, nice.”

But backsplashes attract immediate attention. More importantly, you will feel like you have made major inroads toward creating a brand-new kitchen – for little more than you would spend on a weekend trip.

The reasons are because kitchen backsplashes are:
