#How To Choose An Extractor Fan For Your Kitchen

Every time you cook something vapors and gases are released, sometimes it s in the form of steam, sometimes it s smoke, and sometimes it s invisible.  Because you re cooking, these warm, moist vapors often contain oils, which turn into grease as the vapor makes contact with your cupboards and furniture, resulting in a sticky, unsightly residue and unpleasant odors.

Over time, without a range hood or exhaust fan, excess moisture from the steam can cause extensive structural damage in your kitchen.  If you do a lot of cooking it won t take long for mold and mildew to set in, and once that happens it can be very difficult to eliminate.

Exhaust and extractor fans are included in most kitchens when the house is being built but that doesn t necessarily mean it s the right fan for your needs, nor does it mean it s the best quality fan.  If it s time to buy a new range hood for your kitchen and you re not sure what you re loo ... #How To: Building a Kitchen Island With Cabinets

1. Assemble the cabinets upside-down and then measure. Clamp the cabinets together and attach using screws.

2. Since upper cabinets do not automatically come with a toe-kick, one will have to be built. This project calls for an L-shaped toe kick using 2x4s. The toe-kick should be built so it sits 3 inches in on all sides of the cabinets and measures 4 inches high. Place spacers throughout the toe kick over the points where the cabinets meet. Once built, screw the toe-kick spacers to the cabinet.

3. Flip the peninsula right-side-up and place it into position. Screw the new peninsula cabinets into the pre-existing ones.

4. Place the MDF countertop on top of the peninsula cabinets. The countertop should hang 2 inches over the door side and 8 inches over the backside. The overhang on the backside will create added seating space. Attach the countertop by screwing up through the cabinets.

Kitchen plinth LED lights mediacenterhouse.com

I used to have LED spots in the kitchen plinths but after buying 2 different sets from Ebay and B Q and them both failing, I seeked out a new way of getting that bling in my kitchen. Plus I ve just had cream ceramic tiles laid throughout the whole ground floor so was after something with a bit more kick. As it was before

So from a recommendation off the internet, I bought a 5m reel of LEDs off a Chinese seller on ebay and requested another 2m so that I had a 7m run long enough to go around my kitchen. The total price for the 7m reel and an RF wireless controller was ?120. They can display 6 static colours (White, Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Purple) or colour change between those in a very smooth way. If you look at the refelction of the individual LEDs in the floor (too bright to stare dirrectly at), you can see the RGB elements gradually fading in sequence so as to give a smooth colour change.

The colour setting and spe ... Read more »

#How to Choose the Right Kitchen Floor

Some households are tougher on their floors than others. Learn about the different types available and determine what flooring best suits your needs before you remodel.

You scoot chairs across them. Kids play on them. Family pets sprawl out on them. No doubt about it, kitchen floors take a beating. That’s why it’s so important to do your research before selecting a new floor for this all-important room.

John Petrie, president-elect of the National Kitchen and Bath Association and owner/designer of Mother Hubbard s Custom Cabinetry in Mechanicsburg, PA, encourages homeowners to think about how they want their new floor to look and function.

“It’s also really important to think about where the kitchen is in relationship to the rest of the house,” he says. “If it’s right off the garage or pool and it’s where kids are going to land with muddy boots and wet towels, you need to take that into consideration.”

How Do I Choose the Best Kitchen Utensil Holder?

7,17,13,12,8,9,15,10,16,14

With the wide variety of styles available, choosing the best kitchen utensil holder can be difficult. There are holders that look like rustic pottery and others that look like pieces of steel machinery. The decor of the kitchen, the number and type of utensils that need to be stored and the size of the area where cooking takes place are all going to help determine what the best kitchen utensil holder is for a person's particular needs.

There are three main types of kitchen utensil holders. The first type looks like a small bucket and is designed to hold a variety of different spoons and spatulas where they are easily accessible. The second type is a specialized holder for just one type of utensil or only a single utensil, such as a standing spoon holder. The third type is a wall-mounted holder that uses magnets, hooks or clamps to hold the utensils in place. The one that is best for a given ... Read more »

    #How to Decorate a Mediterranean-Style Orange Kitchen

Decorate a Mediterranean-style kitchen in muted orange tones.

    Warm Palette

Paint the walls a mid-value, terra-cotta orange hue. Choose an orange variety that is slightly muted, which has a small amount of gray added to the formula. This ensures the color is visually toned down, and levels the amount of saturation in the paint. To give the walls a feeling of dimension and age, apply a copper or gold layer of Venetian plaster or color wash using a faux finish technique. To highlight the soft, orange walls, use touches of muted, ocean blue in tiled areas, accessories and fabrics.

    Decorative Tile

Decorate the Mediterranean kitchen with tile. Include hand-painted tile in areas ranging from the kitchen backsplash to the area around the stove. Select tiles with Old World details, such as rough, tumbled edges for a rustic appearance. Add tile patterns that feature quintessential Tuscan motifs ... Read more »

    #How to choose a splashback

Splashbacks are large surfaces - and can be a real opportunity to add some colour to your kitchen. Image by Stegbar.

    What is a splashback?

A splashback is a protective surface on your kitchen wall, designed to protect it from water, greasy marks and splatters. Splashbacks perform a fairly basic task, but can make a big difference to the look of your kitchen. Identifying the right splashback for your kitchen will involve a bit of thought about your budget, and the style of kitchen you're building.

Budget - what do different splashbacks cost?

Will your splashback have a mosaic or pattern designed in? Do you require powerpoints? And are you able to get away with a standard (i.e. pre-cut) sized splashback? Many types of splashbacks - particularly those in a single piece like acrylic, stone or glass - will need to be custom-made with electricity point cut-outs built in, which will add to your costs.

Different Types of LED Kitchen Lighting

LED stands for light emitting diodes, and these lights are widely used for kitchen lighting purposes. LEDs are often used to illuminate some areas in a kitchen which can be difficult to light with standard bulbs. For some types of LED kitchen lighting it just requires the simple replacement of fluorescent or incandescent bulbs with new LED bulbs. In some other situations, LED kitchen lighting units are specially mounted under cabinets or even inside furniture pieces to give focused illumination. LED lighting can vary, not only in cost, but also in the quality of light. These differences can be found in LED kitchen light bulbs and also the fixtures.

Today, most kitchens have at least one ceiling light fixture, that is mounted on the kitchen's ceiling surface or is recessed in the ceiling. These lighting fixtures often use compact fluorescent light bulbs or standard incandescent light bulbs. A number of manufacturers now make bulbs that ... Read more »

    COST

Step 1: Get the right tools to start

A clogged kitchen sink can wreck a perfectly good evening in front of the tube. Instead of settling in to watch the Series, you'll find yourself staring at a sink full of dirty, backed-up water and wondering whether to call in a plumber ($$$$$). However, with two inexpensive tools and a little practice, you can fix this mess in less than an hour.

In this article, we'll show you how to use a plunger and snake to clear up all but the most stubborn drain clogs. Plungers are sold at any hardware store or home center (lead photo). Those with larger rubber bells deliver more thrust, but most will work for kitchen drains. Be sure it has a stout handle so you can apply plenty of force.

#How to Choose the Right Kitchen Island

The kitchen island is an amazing feature in today’s modern kitchen because it is so functional. It adds countertop space, storage, seating, and is even utilitarian when used as a cooktop, sink, or both. In large kitchens, the island serves like the axle, with all supporting features radiating out like spokes in a wheel. In small spaces, a rolling island adds versatility. It is a focal point from a design perspective, usually the spot where your eye rests first when you walk into the kitchen. Because it serves so many uses, choosing the right features really helps distinguish custom kitchens and generic ones.

Trash Cans: Find Household Trash Can Designs Online

The size of your trash bin should correspond in some way to the size of your household. The more people at home, the bigger it should be. For smaller households, it might be tempting to go for a larger container in order to make less trips outside to the garbage. But just remember, the longer you keep the same bag, the more likely unpleasant odors will develop. Stick to a size that can hold about a week’s worth of garbage, so that it can be emptied and taken to the curb for the trash collector on each visit. For larger families, you might have to make multiple trips a week.

This is a tough one. Most prefer to put the waste receptacle somewhere out of eyesight. This is a great idea, particularly if there is no top to your bin (no one wants their old trash on display). However, the bin must also be easily accessible — the last thing you want is to be searching for the garbage while trying to prepare a meal.

#Would I Be Crazy to Choose Marble Countertops for My Kitchen? Marble Countertop Pros and Cons

Last week my husband and I bought our first house, and it's a real fixer-upper! We are putting in a new kitchen (watch this space for lots on the IKEA cabinet planning process!), and I find myself wanting white marble countertops very badly. Am I crazy? Read on for some of the pros and cons of marble countertops, and to add your own advice: I'd love to hear your experience!

I love the clean, bright look of marble, as well as its inherent elegance and timelessness. It adds an element of dressiness to a kitchen, which I appreciate since in our new house the kitchen will be open to the dining room.

In spite of its classic looks, though, marble is also one of the less expensive choices in natural, hard-wearing countertop materials. Depending on the type of marble, it can be more affordable than granite, and certainly more so than quartz and stainless steel. L ... Read more »

Kitchen Island Ideas for Small Kitchens | eHow

A kitchen cart is a small, movable island. Select a kitchen cart that is compact, but provides extra storage, utility and work space. For example, carts with wood or stainless steel bars beneath can hold kitchen towels or pot holders. Purchase large clothespins to clip desired accessories onto the bars. Roll your cart into a storage area when it is not in use to save space.

Created for storage in room corners or on outdoor patios, wine carts work well in small kitchens because the tiny surface area is usually just large enough to hold a few beverages at a time. Wine carts are identical to kitchen carts and islands, but also include wine storage space at the base of the units. Shelving may also be included for drink mixers and other bar accessories. If the primary purpose of your island is food prep, store cutting boards underneath the wine cart for easy access. A wine cart rests on two legs and a pair of wheels, so it is stable ... Read more »

superfront besta cupboard front for Ikea

We re all familiar with the concept of the Ikea hack, a design phenomenon that is even supported by the store itself, but until now it has been mainly about DIY versions. I know people who have repainted their doors, or even had new ones made and spray painted. I bought the cupboards but sourced my own handles and worktop. Now, it turns out, there s a company making new doors especially designed to fit onto Ikea kitchen cupboards and furniture.

    #How to Design a Cupcake-Themed Kitchen

Use cupcake cups and colors as inspiration for fabrics and kitchen decor.

    Frosted Focal Point

Turn the largest area of open wall space into a focal wall for your cupcake kitchen by painting a large cupcake silhouette on it in a single color, such as white or pink on a red wall, or yellow, beige or light blue on a white wall. Copy a clip-art cupcake image by drawing it on the wall in chalk before painting, or project the image on the wall with an opaque projector to trace it. For a more whimsical look, paint a kawaii-style cupcake, complete with smiling face, on the wall, or feature several different kawaii cupcakes in a parade across the wall. In an apartment or rental home, use contact paper cut into a large cupcake shape to create a temporary, large silhouette for your focal wall. A stamped cupcake wall border decorates the perimeter of the room if there's no space for a focal wall. Cupcake-shaped removable decals ... Read more »

After years of perusing FLOR's catalog and website, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the carpet tiles for my entryway and kitchen. The Problem: I have gone through about five different rugs in my entryway. With one pitiful rug pad and two overly-welcoming dogs that rush the front door every time they hear a noise I was forever straightening, fixing and flattening the front rug. I had already tried multiple kinds of rug pads topped with different rug styles and nothing eliminated the problem. The Solution: Modular carpet tiles by FLOR.

We've talked about FLOR many times here. price often being the biggest factor that keeps people from making the purchase. But when you consider how many different rugs and pads I had already purchased as well as the enormous headaches of constant rug-fixing the $110 for the FLOR tiles for my entryway was a no-brainer at this point. And when they get too dirty or one of the dogs inevitably vomits on ... Read more »

#How to fit kitchen unit hinges

DIY expert Craig Phillips demonstrates how to hang cupboard doors. You can learn how to cut your doors to size with our article How to use a circular saw

Cut your hinge hole in the door

Mark out a line set back 10mm from the edge of the door. This is where the circumference of the hole you need to drill in the door for the hinge will touch.

You can buy a drill bit especially designed for cutting these holes for kitchen unit hinges.

So, hold your drill vertically with the hinge cutting bit in place, and drill your hole. Remember to hold the drill securely, and that you are not drilling right through the door! A depth of about 10mm should be about right, but check with the hinges you are using.

You know simply slip the hinge into position, and then screw the hinge in place. It is best to drill a small pilot hole for your screws.

Each door should have two hinges.

How to Make an Apron (12 Steps) | eHow

Choose 1 1/4 yards of fabric for your apron. If the apron is for gardening or other outdoor work, choose a heavy fabric such as denim or canvas. Otherwise, choose a medium-weight fabric. Prewash the fabric.

Make a paper pattern for your apron out of butcher or kraft paper. Lay the paper on a fabric cutting board and use a yardstick, pencil and scissors to measure and cut the paper to 36 inches by 25 inches. Position the paper so that the 25-inch ends are to your left and right.

Make a pencil mark 8 inches down from the top left corner on the left short edge. Now make a mark 10 inches from the top left corner on the top long edge. Rotate the paper to the right so that the short left edge is now at the top.

Start at the first pencil mark you made in step 3 and draw a line that gently curves down and out toward the second pencil mark. This line will form the bib portion of the apron.

#How To Fit a Dining Room Into Small Spaces

Whenever we ask readers why they don't entertain more often, lack of space inevitably crops up as a recurring reason. Although space can definitely limit the types of parties you host (it might not be a great idea to have a kegger in your studio apartment), it shouldn't keep you from inviting smaller groups of friends over for a dinner party. Here are five ways to make room for a dining table, even if you live in a few hundred square feet.

    1. Try a round table: A compact round table usually seats more people than a rectangular one, and it can fit into tight corners. Kens' table (shown in the first photo above) is an extra-space-saving vintage Danish modern Hans Olsen dining set.

    2. Make a surface do double duty: Fold two (or three) spaces into one — a bar countertop can easily double as a dining table.

#How To Fix Wonky Kitchen Cupboards - Bookshelf Boyfriend - Guides To Everything

Here’s a simple guide to sorting your wonky kitchen cupboards. All you should need is a Phillips (cross headed) screwdriver. Shown here is the most basic kitchen hinge, so yours might look slightly different, but all have the same adjustable screws. You may have to prise off a cover plate to reveal all the screw heads.

If your cupboard doors aren’t in line then the screws you want to adjust are the ones holding the hinge to the side of the cupboard. Loosen all four screws (top and bottom hinge) by a half turn whilst supporting the weight of the door. If the door is too low, simply hold it higher then tighten the screws once more and vice versa. If the door won’t go any higher/lower, try adjusting the opposite door.

    #How to design kitchen lighting

The design director of John Cullen, Sally Storey, on how to get the right light for preparing food and setting the mood in your kitchen.

1 Forget grids of downlights; use light only where it is required. Work surfaces need good task lighting, whether it is from downlights or pendants. As well as adding impact and visual interest, a row of pendants over an island will help provide a visual divide between the dining and kitchen areas.

2 Under-cupboard lighting is usually best for task lighting because it is well hidden and stops your shadow obscuring the worktop. The latest LED products have less heat output, which saves money and prevents cupboards and food becoming too warm. Using a continuous Contour LED strip or individual fittings of only two watts is an easy way to create practical and attractive lighting.

A new kitchen, whether it's a remodel or part of a friend's first apartment, requires a space for cutting food for meal preparation as well as a means of cutting the items. Purchase a cutting board that matches the room's decor for a kitchen remodel; for example, if it has butcher-block countertops, a butcher-block-style cutting board made of numerous small pieces of wood in the same wood tones is a perfect pairing. What Is a Modular Kitchen? (with pictures)

    13,17,7,10,15,8,16,9,14,12

A modular kitchen is one that is made up of pre-made cabinet parts. These parts are fitted together to create a whole, functional kitchen design. Modular cabinets are popular in kitchen remodeling projects and are available in two main types: upper and lower units. There are also full units such as closets or pantries that fit from floor to ceiling, or almost to the ceiling. Since a modular kitchen is prebuilt and purchased ready made in sections, often flat packed for home assembly, it's the opposite of a custom made kitchen that is built on site.

A modular kitchen can be much less expensive than a custom made kitchen since everything is already constructed. The interesting thing about having a modular kitchen is that it can still be somewhat unique because different combinations of upper, lower and full units can be grouped to fit each kitchen's size and style.
