How to Buy a Cheap Kitchen Countertop (7 Steps) | eHow

Accurately measuring for countertops is probably the most critical step in this process. Removing the existing countertops makes measuring easier. Measure inches and record your measurements on graph or lined paper.

Determine the depth of the lower cabinets by measuring from the back wall to the front of the cabinet. Lower cabinets are usually set between 24 to 26 inches from the wall. Standard pre-made tops completely cover this space if the depth is within those measurements.

Measure the length of the countertops by holding the tapemeasure along the back of the cabinets against the wall. If the counter has an L shape, do the same kind of measurement on both lengths. Having the longest measurement of each section lets you know what size of pre-made top to purchase.

Purchase the top longer than your longest measurement. If your longest measurement is 90 inches, purchase a 96-inch piece. Some of the pre-made tops have an attached backsplash, saving you even more money. Be sure to check the width of the tops you purchase to make certain they are wide enough to completely cover the lower cabinets.

Pre-made laminate tops have 45-degree corner tops available for a tight fit in the corner of the countertop. The pre-made laminate tops can be cut on the square end only. Unless you are an expert, do not attempt to cut, modify or trim the 45-degree edge.

An alternative choice for an inexpensive countertop can be a pre-made butcher block wooden top. Home improvement stores and lumber companies usually have such tops in stock. They will not have any corner pieces so plan for some additional waste when cutting corner pieces. Remember that these tops are usually sold unfinished. They need to be sealed and oiled with mineral oil or a marine varnish to make them usable.

Ceramic tile is always an inexpensive option for the countertop. You need plywood under the tile, which adds to the expense. Tile is sold by the square foot. Measure all of the tops of the cabinets. Backsplash tile has a finished edge called a bull nose. Measure the backsplash separately to figure how many bull nose pieces you need. The front edges of the counters also need special trim tile. Measure all of the front edges for the project. Remember that both inside and outside corners have special pieces. The plain, flat tile is really inexpensive, but all the trim pieces can make the cost of a tile countertop skyrocket
