How to Paint Kitchen Cupboard Doors (6 Steps) | eHow

Remove the kitchen cupboard doors from the cupboards, hinges and all. Unscrew them from their hinges and write down between the holes on each hinge where exactly each particular door goes. This saves you considerable trouble later on.

Use an all purpose cleaner and a rag to clean all the dirt, dust, and food residue from all of your kitchen cupboard doors before proceeding. If you don't do this, you will never get a clean, even coat of paint.

Go over the entire surface of the doors, including the edges, with fine sandpaper. This is done to create enough texture for the primer to hold on to so it clings properly to the wood.

Prime your kitchen cupboard doors before proceeding. The exact primer that you use will depend on the type of paint you are going to be using. Just make sure that the primer is designed for your particular type of paint. Once the primer is dry, sand it down a bit using a fine sandpaper. This will smooth out any irregularities or bumps in the surface, and will help the paint adhere better without chipping later on.

Apply the paint. The quality of the paint brush you use will be a large factor in the final appearance of the finish. Choose a high quality brush and evenly apply the paint in a thin, even layer. Two to three thin layers should be plenty for most situations. Just make sure to let it dry completely before sanding briefly and moving on to the next layer.

Remount the doors. Attach the hinges to the kitchen cupboard doors themselves first, then remount them inside the cabinets. This is where labeling their proper positioning ahead of time really pays off, as you will not have to spend any time figuring out what goes where.
