Build a kitchen island Canadian Home Workshop

No man is an island, but if you build one for your kitchen you ll rarely be alone. A great kitchen island draws people together, giving them a place to hang around and talk as the chef prepares a meal. It also boosts storage capacity and food prep area in your kitchen.

I began by planing some rough maple to 1 1/2" thick for the top. When you're edge-gluing boards into a large assembly like this, it's best to alternate the arc of the growth rings from one board to the next. You should also alternate your clamps above and below the assembly to prevent bowing. Use just enough pressure to squeeze out a bead of glue, then stop tightening. If you squeeze out too much glue, you'll create a weak joint.

Let the tabletop dry for a day, then sand it and joint one edge. Trim the ends with a circular saw. (The tabletop is too large to cross cut on a tablesaw.)

The end-grain edges are capped by breadboard ends. They reduce the ... Read more »

Laminated Worktops - SimplifyDIY - DIY and Home Improvement Solutions
Introduction

Laminated surfaces are widely available under a variety of brand names, such as Formica, Duropal, Axiom and Prima.

Fundamentally all laminated worktops are constructed from a high-density particleboard core, onto which a sheet of paper carrying the pattern is heat-bonded using resin adhesives. This forms a waterproof laminate across the surface of the worktop that can create a finish ranging from matt, through satin to gloss.

Smooth, glossy and dark coloured surfaces generally offer less scratch-resistance than textured, light coloured surfaces. A deeply textured surface, however, will be harder to clean.

To protect the particleboard from humidity a protective layer is almost always applied to the underside of the worktop.

A ‘drip seal’ is also applied about an inch from the ... Read more »

How to Make a Rustic Kitchen Table (5 Steps) | eHow

Old door Sheet of glass Four wooden table legs Light grade sandpaper Screw driver Screws for attaching the legs Adhesive rubber stoppers

Find an old door at your local salvage or thrift store. Natural wood doors that have not been painted fit better with a rustic design. Table legs can be taken from an old table or purchased new at your local home improvement store. Your local home improvement store will cut the glass you purchase from them to fit your kitchen table.

Remove the door handle and any other hardware from the door. Clean the wood with oil especially designed to bring life back to old wood. Holloway's Lemon Oil is a good product to use for this purpose. Lightly sand any rough surfaces on the side and edges of the door to protect your family from splinters. If the door is in really bad shape, you may want to sand it down completely and stain it. This will remove some of the charm, but the rustic nature of ... Read more »

How to Decorate With Italian Restaurant Theme | eHow

Heavy black metal accessories

Purchase a red checkered tablecloth and matching napkins. You'll also need large green rings to hold the rolled napkins. Remember, Italy's flag is red, white and green, so much of the decoration should go with those colors. If you have red chairs, use a white tablecloth and the red checkered napkins.

Create an appropriate centerpiece. Use candle wax, candles, a bottle and macram natural-tone tan twine found in craft stores. Make your own authentic drip candles to make it look like you've been in business for years.

Many Italian restaurants use wine bottles with rounded bases as candle holders. If you have one, wrap the bottom in macram tan twine. Coat the bottom of the bottle with white craft glue. Start at the center and wrap the twine in a circle around your starting point until it covers the entire bottom. Run the glue on the sides halfway up the bottle, then wrap the sides ... Read more »

Tips on Hiding Wires for Under-Cabinet Lighting | eHow

To make hiding your cables easier, you should install your under-cabinet lighting at the back of your cabinets and right up against the kitchen wall. Paint the bottom of your cabinets with reflective paint to illuminate the entire countertop each time you turn the cabinet lights on. Mounting the lights on the back of the cabinets allows you to hide the cables in the walls without running any cables to the front of the cabinets.

Hardwired or plug-in lights can be installed at the front of your cabinets for maximum illumination effect, and the cables can be hidden along the inside of the cabinets. Drill a small hole up towards the very front of the cabinet where it cannot be seen, and run the cable up through the hole. Run the cable along the very front of the cabinets and around the side until you can wire it into the switch cable from the wall. Use vinyl to cover the bottom of the cabinets and prevent the cable from bei ... Read more »

"Kitchen Window Treatments - Your Decorating Details"

Kitchen window treatments add the decorating details to any decorating scheme. Window treatments can be regular curtains, swags, louver doors, valances, drapes, decorated panels or anything else you can think up!

Another thing to think about when selecting kitchen window treatments is material. If you have a caf? type or bistro kitchen, you may want to go with wooden louvered doors or blinds these can be opened to let the sun on and easily slid shut at night. If your kitchen is country you'll probably want cotton curtains with a matching pattern or embroidered design. A Victorian kitchen will benefit from simple lace curtain panels. A more modern kitchen might be begging for a simple valance or caf? curtain in a denim, corduroy or burlap type material.

Kitchen window treatments can also be used to hide flaws or trick the eye into thinking your windows are different than they actually are. Smaller windows c ... Read more »

The Kitchen Store - Kitchen had photographs of existing kitchen in my Kindle.  Was immediately approached and asked if help was needed.  Responded, not right now.  Then looked around the store of at the vast array of cabinet designs, fixtures, and other items, prior to requesting help.

Ann Higginson was more than helpful.  Showed her the images and she explained their process.  We made an appointment where Ann came to the house, took measurements.  A few days later, returning to The Kitchen Store, Ann had the kitchen design on her computer in 3D, this visual helped finalize the placement, design, cabinets, and other items need.  She even made suggestions I haven t thought of.

The construction process including tear down, installation, and finishing went smoothly.  Ann and her team, were there to help along the way.  Helping with suggestions.  Not only was the kitchen remodeled, so were the hallway cabinets, two bathrooms, and the laundry room.  The slab contractor, Sawa ... Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing vs Refacing

The only thing that refinishing and refacing have in common is that they both can change the color of kitchen cabinets, but definitely in different ways! They are both good options but when I think at refinishing vs refacing it is obvious that refacing is the one that will add value to the house.

REFINISHING

Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing is applying a coat of stain or paint after sanding and stripping off the old finish. This job can be done by the homeowner, a bit better by a painter or preferably done by a professional refinisher using a spray gun and spray booth to produce a flawless finish on the doors.

The main challenge about refinishing is dealing with the side panels, toe kicks, edges, etc. Basically whatever is exposed that is not a door or drawer front. Hiring a professional refinisher to spray the doors in a spray booth, and then to have the exposed areas of the boxes finished with a roller or brush in my opi ... Read more »

The Kitchen Utensil Holder

Utensil Canister. Chris Adams, copyright 2009, Licensed to About.com

An ergonomic kitchen is one that has efficient storage of all the equipment you need. Cabinets provide storage for bulky items like pots and pans. Drawers provide storage for all those flat utensils you need to make the perfect dinner. But where do you stick those bulky utensils?

A utensil canister is a great ergonomic solution for storing those bulky utensils and provides quick and easy access to your most used kitchen tools.

But there are some guidelines you should follow.

Do not overfill the utensil canister. If more than one item comes out when you pull on your utensil then it is stuffed to tight. If you have to fight with it every time you want a tool you ll loose all your efficiency and generate a lot of frustration.

Keep some space around the utensil canister. You do not want to knock anything when you grab a utensil. Also make sure there is ... Read more »

How to Paint Laminate With Oak Trim Cabinets (13 Steps) | eHow

Acrylic oil-based primer

Remove the cabinets from the hinges and take the hardware off the cabinets.

Clean the laminate with warm soapy water and a grease-fighting liquid dishwashing soap. Rinse the soap away and dry the surface with dry cleaning cloths.

Place painter's tape along the oak trim edges. Make sure to place the tape directly at the edge of the laminate and oak wood.

Scuff the laminate with 80-grit sandpaper. This medium texture sandpaper prepares the laminate surface by removing the glossy finish to enable the primer to bond with the surface.

Apply a coat of acrylic water-based primer. Use either a small sponge paint roller or paintbrush to paint the coat of primer. Let the primer dry four to six hours.

Sand the cabinets gently with fine 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe the dust away with a tack cloth.

Paint the laminate area with water-based latex paint. Use t ... Read more »

Moen Kitchen Faucet Problems | eHow

One problem reported regarding a Moen faucet was a low water flow problem. The cause of this appeared to be some sort of clogging problem at or near the strainer/aerator of the faucet. Typically such a problem is subject to an easy resolution by cleaning of the faucet aerator.

A user reported on a Moen shower faucet a problem of getting only hot water or only cold water. The shower faucet did not produce the blend of hot and cold water normally used when an individual showers. According to the manufacturer, this was an installation problem in which the knob in the shower head had been installed upside down.

Another problem reported on Moen faucets is that of a clogged showerhead. Here again, this problem would not apply exclusively to a Moen brand faucet. The resolution to this problem involved a simple procedure for cleaning out the clogged showerhead.

Another potential problem reported is unsatisfactory flow rate through ... Read more »
