What Is a Kitchen Wall Cabinet?

Thermofoil Kitchen Wall Cabinets From Kraftmaid. Kraftmaid

You can live without kitchen wall cabinets. But I have never seen a kitchen without some kind of wall cabinet.

Kitchen cabinets are mostly comprised of two different types:

  1. Base Cabinets - The true workhorse of the kitchen scheme, base cabinets provide a base for other services and storage. Base cabinets also define the kitchen floorplan.
  2. Wall Cabinets - A helper for some kitchen functions, wall cabinets mainly provide storage space. Unless custom cabinets, these wall cabinets come in pre-determined sizes so that they will interface easily with base cabinets.

Wall cabinets provide storage mainly for:

  • Food.  Food items needed on an immediate basis are kept in wall cabinets because they can be quickly accessed.  Other food items that are used less frequently (oatmeal, sugar, flour, etc.) are usually kept just outside of the main kitchen space in pantries.
  • Plates, Glasses.  Tableware, except for utensils, that is used on a daily basis is kept in wall cabinets.
  • Fine Items.  Because wall cabinets can be closed, they are perfect for storing fine, expensive items, like china, that needs to be protected.
  • Some Cooking Gear.  Light cooking tools, like measuring cups, are stored here.

Because of their elevation (eye level and higher), wall cabinets are not practical for heavy food items or heavy pans and appliances.

Wall cabinets do have other functions. You can:

  • Affix undercabinet lighting.
  • Use the soffits for displaying special china.
  • Maintain them as open shelving.
