One way to snap life into your kitchen is by putting up wallpaper. It is a great alternative to paint and is a fun and colorful way to do a little kitchen remodeling at a small cost.
The number of prints available on the market today is astounding, and can at times seem overwhelming. Every shade in the rainbow has its own paper with its own texture. Patterns range from simple raised flowers to bustling city or farm scenes.
Find a color, pattern or design that flows well with the kitchen appliances as well as the rest of the room and house. Try not to overdo it with the wall paper if you already have a lot of decoration in your kitchen. Nothing spoils a look faster than theme overkill. Wallpaper should enhance your room and make the people using it feel warm and layered. It shouldn’t make them run screaming from the room.
Applying the paper can be time consuming. Dedicate a full afternoon to putting up your wall paper without distractions. Follow all the included instructions.
If the wallpaper has a simple pattern and is self adhesive, here are some simple instructions on how to hang it.
- Roll out a strip of paper that is four inches longer than the wall from the ceiling to baseboard. You will cut off excess paper later.
- Moisten the back of the paper using a water tray or follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply paste if necessary.
- Begin at the ceiling and align the paper with the edge of one wall. Allow for two inches of extra wallpaper at the top of the wall. Use a level to ensure your paper is straight.
- Using a plastic smoother, flatten the paper to the wall. Remove any wrinkles by pulling the paper away from the wall and then flattening it again with your plastic smoother.
- Smooth out the middle first, working your way to the edges. Should you be unable to remove an air bubble, poke a hole in it with a needle and force the air out. Once the backing glue dries you will never notice the hole.
- Trim the paper at the top using a straight edge and a sharp utility knife.
- Continue with the next piece. Align it at eye level with the first piece to allow the pattern to flow naturally. Nothing screams ‘amateur’ like wallpaper patterns that don’t line up!
- Gently roll each seam with a seam roller, and repeat in 15 minutes.
- To create a clean end seam, allow one piece to overlap the other and cut both together.
- Using damp sponge clean away excess glue.
