How to Reface Metal Kitchen Cabinets (5 Steps) | eHow Wipe down the cabinets with a sponge soaked in warm water and mild dish detergent to remove all dirt, grime and stickiness that could interfere with the application of contact paper Disassemble the cabinets as much as possible with a screwdriver, removing all doors and hardware to make application much simpler. Measure all parts of the cabinets with a measuring tape, including all doors and drawer fronts that you'd like covered. Place a cutting mat down on a flat surface and begin cutting your contact paper with an utility knife based on the measurements taken in the previous step. Most rolls of contact paper come with grids on the back, which can be used as a guide for cutting. Use a measurement T-square to ensure straight lines and squared corners. Apply the contact paper to the cabinet pieces, starting at a corner to make sure the paper lines up evenly with the cabinetry. Use a rubber brayer to prevent and get rid of bubbling.
