#My Dream Home: 10 Open Shelving Ideas For The Kitchen

by Dagmar Bleasdale on November 25, 2012

I m in love with open shelving in the kitchen but I just learned that Don is not a fan.

I really want open shelving in our next kitchen because I have a collection of pretty dishes that I want to show off and accessible without having to open doors.

This is what Don prefers:

And this is what I prefer. I think a few open shelves near the sink are practical and make the kitchen feel bigger.

So it looks like I have to make my case for open shelving. No problem, I have tons of ammunition!

Here are some beautiful examples I ve been collecting on my Pinterest kitchen board .

An easy way to create open shelving is to just take the doors off existing cabinets, as in this example:

If you are designing a new kitchen or are renovating, shelves instead of cabinets are an option. I m still undecided if I prefer floating shelves over shel ... Read more »

You are so awesome to share all of your sources! Your kitchen is stunning, 1000 likes.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! I love the hardware on your kitchen cabinets your desk. Would you mind sharing those sources as well?

Your kitchen is gorgeous! I love your home and your style and your kitchen does not disappoint!

One question though. I see the rug does have some very negative reviews. I was wondering about a couple of the smaller ones in my kitchen. The two main complaints are dirt (shedding) and stink. Have you noticed that? There were many of such comments. Is the rug soft enough for bare feet? I need to check it out at our World Market. Thanks for your input!

#New Kitchen, ideas - Cookware

New Kitchen, ideas

Ok, so we are finally selling our current house so will be starting the build of the new one. I need some input on my sink. I know. small thing, but debating which way to go. stainless or white.

First off, I have already designed most of the kitchen. has not been built yet, but I have the colors etc picked out. heh. We had to wait till this house sold to start on the new house. We close on this house the 17th ;)

We have, for the counters, Ubatuba granite.

For the backsplash, we have a 6 x3 subway tile that will match a larger tile of the same type on the fireplace in the living room. It went well with the dark counters.

The cabinets are Alder wood in English Chestnut.

We have all stainless appliances, (2 maytag dishwashers, a 48 Capital Culinarian range, an electric oven (TBD), microwave, and a full size fridge/freezer combo, probably Frigidaire.)

So. I am debating the sink. ... Read more »

TIMELESS BACKSPLASH PATTERN IDEAS

For 5000 years mosaics have been a popular decoration in bathhouses, palaces, and now your kitchen. Learn how to get a stunning mosaic backsplash that will rival the Romans. We'll show you how to get started.

Mosaics are defined as small, glazed glass, stone, or tile pieces organized in a design or pattern. Some mosaics, like those in Roman bathhouses, depicted plants, animals, people, landscapes, etc. In the last 50 years, the most popular mosaic material has been the glazed ceramic 1 x 1 tile arranged in a geometric repeating pattern. Kitchen Furniture | Kitchen Design | American Modern Living

If you're remodeling or redesigning your kitchen. you've got a tall order in front of you – the kitchen is one room where practicality is a must, but it's also a room that has great potential for theme and style.

Aside from the stove. refrigerator and other appliances, there are a few pieces of kitchen furniture that will also make your room work for you, not against you. The first among these is a kitchen island. Kitchen islands can do many things – they add extra working space, extra storage or both, depending on the type of island you choose. Some have built-in lazy Susans to make canned goods and other items easily accessible, while others have butcher block tops so you have a designated area to prepare your meals.

A kitchen island is also a great dining area if you don't have room for a full kitchen table. Choose the right kitchen island furniture, such as a set of bar stools or dining chairs. and you' ... Read more »

#New Kitchen Cabinet Doors: Pictures, Options, Tips & Ideas

If you're planning to install new kitchen cabinet doors, as opposed to an entirely new cabinet set, the main structure of your cabinets will stay in place, so you'll still save on costs for demolition and construction. And you'll have less DIY labor to worry about, since you'll just be removing the existing doors and replacing them with new ones. But you'll still have plenty to decide on with regard to materials, styles and colors.

You'll have a range of options to consider when it comes to materials, among them cost, durability and availability. Many of the popular woods used for kitchen cabinet doors are widely available and affordable. Higher-end or exotic woods like cherry, mahogany and ebony are more expensive and can be harder to come by. Laminate and stainless steel are also options for new kitchen cabinet doors, and these two materials are most often used in more modern-leaning kitchen designs.

#New Kitchen Ideas

When you're planning a new kitchen, there are so many styles and 'looks' to choose from, how do you know what you decide on won't date too quickly?

Right now the experts agree that for long-term value simple design, clean lines, and light natural colours are the way to go.

cupboards and drawers

Plain, glossy vacuum formed doors are still the most popular and affordable choice for new kitchens in colours white or antique white. This type of finish is easy to clean, won't chip or yellow making it ideal for busy kitchens.

Cupboards and drawers are becoming sleek with a variety of clever hinging options available. Drawers are being used in place of base cabinets and a new and fantastic space saver you should look out for is the 'Blum' corner drawer. Installing some of these means an end to things being lost at the back of those awkward corner cupboards.

For overhead cabinets look out for bi-fold lift doors. They're a fantasti ... Read more »

#New York Historic Farmhouse - Donna and Paul Frank Farmhouse Tour

Kitchen

Kitchen

For the kitchen, Donna envisioned an antidote to the all-white, stainless steel norm, choosing a black La Cornue stove, dark-soapstone counters, and a floor of salvaged bricks. "I love the texture," she says. "It's a little 'downstairs at Downton Abbey .' " She limited the black cabinetry to lower units, in order to install a bank of windows at eye level. Explains Donna, "Seeing the hedgerow was more important than storage"—no matter that the results rendered the dining room extraneous. "We always wind up eating in here!" she says.

In this photo: A local carpenter constructed the cabinets, painted black to match the range and topped with soapstone counters. The floor—made of bricks from the old chimney—is heated radiantly. The cabinets are painted Black Blue by Farrow Ball .

I am throwing a kitchen tea/bridal shower for my sister who gets married on Sept 10th.

Can any one give me some ideas for games please?

I have today and tomorrow to organise the games, I have all the food and decorations organised.

A couple of games I ve played at kitchen teas are.

1. Split people into groups of 3 or 4 and give each group a toilet roll. One person out of each group has to be the bride and the others have to make and dress the bride in the toilet paper to make a bridal gown, the person with the longest train wins.

2. Everybody clips a peg onto their collar when they arrive and each person has to sit with their legs uncrossed. When you see someone with their legs crossed you can go and steal their peg (its amazing cause you automatically cross your legs when you sit down)in the end you ll h ... Read more »

#New Replacement Kitchen Doors – Kitchen Restoration – Free Brochure & Quote

If your kitchen looks a bit past its best, or you simply want to give it a different look, you don’t necessarily have to rip out the existing kitchen and start again. Instead, you may find that having replacement kitchen doors fitted can be an affordable yet elegant solution, and one which brings new life to the whole room.

Getting new life out of your existing kitchen

For many people, replacing the kitchen cupboard doors is actually a better solution than having an entirely new kitchen created from scratch. If you’ve got quite attached to the layout of your kitchen and find that it works for you, then why change it? Of course, if it’s showing signs of wear and tear or you just fancy a new look you may want to give it a bit of a makeover, and that’s where replacement kitchen doors come in. As well as creating far less work and upheaval, a refurbishment is surprisingly affordable and fast ... Read more »

#One-Wall Kitchen - Common Kitchen Layouts - Layouts - Design.

One-Wall Kitchen

For the Small Home

Typically found in small homes, the one-wall kitchen works by keeping all appliances, cooking tools and ingredients within easy reach. It can even be hidden behind sliding or pocket doors to minimize visual clutter in a small, open space such as a studio apartment. As shown here, the sink often sits between the range and refrigerator, a convenient location for cleanup. This design also offers counter space on both sides of the range, which is an important code and safety consideration.

Unfortunately, the sink, range and refrigerator still take up a fair amount of counter space, so finding enough work room for food prep can be a challenge, as is having two cooks use the space. In a truly tiny one-wall kitchen, compact appliances such as a 24-inch range or 24-inch refrigerator can add some counter space while also providing more room for cabinet storage. Usi ... #One Coat Cupboard and Melamine Paint

How much do I need?

Product reviews

Better with a roller by A new kitchen

I've got an ikea Kitchen that i just wanted to replace the doors, however ikea no longer do that range or doors that will fit. To go elsewhere i was quoted £500-£900 just for replacement doors. So i googled kitchen cupboard paint to see if there was such a thing and found several products. After reading countless reviews this one seemed perfect. I then saw a youTube video on how to prepare, use what else I needed to buy which was very helpful. All Under £90 from b q so i gave it a go. I am no expert but using a brush was hard work and did not go well for me. But when i put on the second coat (after waiting 24hrs) i used a roller instead. Well what a difference that made. The paint as i imagined was very thick but still needed a second coat anyway for my doors, despite my poor use of a brush. Even though they look lovely now, In a few weeks wh ... Read more »

#Ninja Kitchen System Review - Ninja Food Processor Reviews

The Bad: While the Ninja chopped onions evenly, it struggled to make salsa. pulverizing tomatoes and leaving the other ingredients nearly untouched. It could blend whole fruits and vegetables, but it couldn't extract juice, and so it doesn't replace a juice extractor. Fruit, ice, and dairy could be blended to create a sweet frozen mixture, but not a true ice cream. We were surprised to see that the included cookbook gives recipes in which you combine ingredients in the Ninja and are then instructed to add the mixture to a separate ice cream maker. While the Ninja could mix a small batch of cookie dough, it needed frequent scraping and was hard to access.

The Bottom Line: While the Ninja works quite well as a blender and for chopping small batches of vegetables, don't hold out hope that it will fill in for a full-sized stand mixer or food processor. You also shouldn't expect it to e ... Read more »

#On the Kitchen Floor: Dark vs. Light

If you had to pick, which would it be - the rich elegance of a dark floor or the crisp, airy feeling of white floors? When deciding between these two extremes, there's more to consider than what initially meets the eye

One of the elements that drew me to my current apartment was the dark, stained hardwood flooring. It produces a level of elegance and contrasts very nicely with the light colored walls. I quickly learned that keeping dark floors in tip-top condition is a constant effort. In a way it's a good wake up call to see just how much dust and crumbs accumulate unnoticed on my floors. In addition to the dust, my light hair sheds onto the floor, and stands out in sharp contrast with the dark wood. I can only imagine what adding a fluffy, white dog to this equation would do.

White flooring can contribute to the Scandinavian aesthetic we love. It's crisp, pure and very fitting for an environment where cleanliness is crucial, ... Read more »
