#How to make a kitchen Island from a set of lower kitchen cabinets

Here's what my dining room looked like before I started my reno. i was ripping this whole wall of cabinets out anyway for my reno but I'm all about re-use/re-cycle

Step 1: find a set of 2 lower cabinets (if you're not lucky to have them already)

I was lucky enough to have taken 2 lower cabinets (with double doors) from my diningroom renovation that I can use for my kitchen island..and they match the kitchen cupboards

If you dont have any lower cabinets have a look at Restore/online etc or buy new I guess? But i like to reuse/recyle

I set the one cabinet in the kitchen just to get an idea of what it might look like when I'm finished

you should also have at least 3 feet of walking space around your whole island and it looks like I'm right on the measurement here so that's awesome!

As you can see there's more reno's going on than just the dining room. I'm actually movin ... Read more »

#Would I Be Crazy to Choose Marble Countertops for My Kitchen? Marble Countertop Pros and Cons

Last week my husband and I bought our first house, and it's a real fixer-upper! We are putting in a new kitchen (watch this space for lots on the IKEA cabinet planning process!), and I find myself wanting white marble countertops very badly. Am I crazy? Read on for some of the pros and cons of marble countertops, and to add your own advice: I'd love to hear your experience!

I love the clean, bright look of marble, as well as its inherent elegance and timelessness. It adds an element of dressiness to a kitchen, which I appreciate since in our new house the kitchen will be open to the dining room.

In spite of its classic looks, though, marble is also one of the less expensive choices in natural, hard-wearing countertop materials. Depending on the type of marble, it can be more affordable than granite, and certainly more so than quartz and stainless steel. L ... Read more »

Virtual Kitchen Designing - Frou FruGal

Yesterday was a bear. I won t bore you with the details, mainly because I d have to relive them in order to bore you. Suffice it to say that I was NOT having fun.

Which meant that I didn t get to even think about my blog or home projects or anything of that nature until about 9 p.m. last night.

I thought I would come up with a quick post just so I could keep on my streak. Since I needed to relax, I started thinking about my kitchen and how I want it to look. I have thrown pictures out of what I am trying to accomplish, but no real mock up. Until last night.

In fact, I was having so much fun with my design that I never did finish it enough to write up a post. This morning was more of the same stuff that had me stressed out yesterday, but I finally found some time to share what I did.

Here is what my kitchen looks like now.

I have added a couple of stools since this picture was shot. Sorry for the bad pic ... Read more »

#How to Match Floor Tile - Kitchen Cabinets

Don't forget to take your wall tile and countertop into consideration as well.

Style

One of the first things to look at when selecting your floor tiles and cabinets is to coordinate their style. Contemporary, slab style cabinets work best with floor tiles that have clean edges and narrow grout joints. Raised panel cabinets can handle multipiece pattern tile floors, as well as floors stone tiles. Cabinets that have strong lines or pronounced wood grain need a floor tile with equal character to stand up to them. This includes slate or tiles made to look like other materials, such as wood or fabric.

Color

The floor tile often needs to balance the colors in the rest of the kitchen. For example, a kitchen with light cabinets and dark counters would have a dark floor to provide balance. If going for a kitchen that uses multiple shades of one color or tone, choose floor tiles that pick up the darkest ... Read more »

#How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

There are many ways to paint kitchen cabinets (I ve tried most of them over the years with varying degrees of success) but this is the way that I have found to be easiest and get the best results.

The picture above shows a base unit and wall unit in my kitchen. It was a dull and underused spot not made any better by the weird Apricot coloured laminate kitchen that I had started to paint a while back.

The paint is Annie Sloan Old White . It needs no undercoat and you just paint it straight on to the cupboards. These cupboards needed two coats and the great thing about it is that the paint goes on very quickly. It is a very easy product to use. I did most of this unit when the children were having their breakfast over about a week and when they had gone to bed for about half an hour. The unit itself is a bit chipped on the sides and one of the drawers rubs but that can be fixed with a new ... Read more »

Kitchen Cabinets Archives - mbwcustomcabinets.com

Having built new homes before, we knew the benefit of working with a custom cabinet maker as opposed to purchasing from big box stores or online.   In my opinion, it’s the best way to get what you want.

After discussing our cabinetry needs with several companies, we decided to work with MBW Custom Cabinets.

S everal important qualities led us to select this company to build our cabinets.

These included:

  •  The overall quality of MBW cabinets and the company’s experience with furniture construction
  •  Their ability to take a floor plan and convert it to a scaled drawing so we could visualize the design, make changes, and approve the concept before starting construction
  •  Marc’s personal attention and willingness to come to our home and chalk out each cabinet so we could determine final placement
  • The satisfact ... Read more »

#Would you do a kitchen with all drawer base cabinets?

Without a second thought (taking into account the sink exceptions you noted which functionally require doors). The only exception would be in a kitchen with no additional storage where you could stash really huge pots (pressure canners and ginormous stock pots come to mind). Even then I might do a pullout (essentially big vertically-oriented drawers when you think about it) and have lids and trays in the front with big pots behind. I am having no doors in my new kitchen if can help it.

I have done all my base cabinets drawer.

My sink does not require doors. I have an apron sink and refuse to crawl around on the floor to find something under it. Even with a garbage disposer, I designed a drawer that's lower in the back, taller in the front. I put a drawer front on it and voila! another drawer. Plus, a more functional space for me.

I just cut the cabinet ou ... Read more »
