#HGTV Ultimate Home Design Review 2015

The HGTV Ultimate Home Design allows you to design a kitchen in three-dimensions, which simulates the actual width, height and depth of the room you are creating so you get a realistic rendering. It also comes with a 3D walk-through that lets you preview your virtual kitchen so that you can see where you need to make changes. In addition, its 3D drag-and-drop tool makes it easy to remove items from the object library and place them in your room. For example, you can drag and drop virtual plants and small appliances and they automatically position themselves on your tables and countertops.

You can enter precise cabinet and appliance dimensions, which is a useful tool if you plan to use your old stove and refrigerator, and you can enter the measurements ahead of time so they fit into the new cabinet scheme. The program operates using both standard and metric measurements.

We like the floor-plan trace that allows you to import exi ... Read more »

How Do I Choose the Best Pine Kitchen Cabinets?

12,16,15,13,8,17,10,7,14,9

Pine kitchen cabinets are a popular choice amongst homeowners and contractors alike. Natural pine wood is light in color, though pine can also be stained to a darker hue. Selecting pine kitchen cabinets that are right for your home and budget is really a matter of choosing a reliable manufacturer.

Since pine wood has many knots, it is best to choose your pine kitchen cabinets in-person. Make sure that you like the look of the pine cabinets you select, and check each cabinet as it is delivered to your home -- some cabinets may not look like all the rest. In addition to the overall look of pine, this wood is largely cost-effective.

When you begin to look for pine kitchen cabinets, you will find that prices differ greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. This is largely due to the quality of pine wood that manufacturers use. Southern pine wood is highly prized for its color and durabil ... Read more »

#Hello Kitty Kitchen Appliances Are Taking Over (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Amazon

Hello Kitty, the adorable Japanese cartoon brought into the world by Sanrio, has been getting a lot of press lately. The biggest news of late is the introduction of Hello Kitty beer -- yes, I'm serious, and so is Sanrio. The company estimates that Hello Kitty branding is worth about $5 billion a year .

Hello Kitty has always been beloved in the food world, from starring in countless bento box lunches to getting a Futomaki sushi roll made in her likeness. Food and the world's most famous kitten (sorry, Lil' Bub ) have always gotten along pretty well. This week, a press release popped up in our inboxes reminding us that it was almost Hello Kitty slow cooker season. We laughed, joked about Hello Kitty garbage cans and paper towel dispensers and then realized -- great Scott -- every single one of these things existed. Hello Kitty kitchen appliances are very, very real, and if you wanted to, ... Read more »

How I Became a Kitchen Designer

I know that a lot of people dream to become some kind of designer one day. I also recognize that I dream to become a clothing designer, but is just a dream that someday who knows . Today for those who want a little inspiration, I ve asked Susan Serra from Thekitchendesigner to tell us her story, on how she became a kitchen designer. Enjoy !

I think one knows early on in life, what one s passions are. Those passions can move into interests and work that can last a lifetime and be very fulfilling. At an early age, I was interested in, no, passionate about, working with space in the home.

I enrolled in Parsons School of Design, and along the way, it became clear to me that my strong interest was the design of kitchen spaces. The path toward being a kitchen designer. however, is not a straight path! Training and education can come from several areas and disciplines, and should. Eventually, I became an NKBA ... Read more »

#Help me fix a broken cabinet door

An unnamed member of my family leaned on an Ikea-type kitchen cabinet door and the screws in the top hinge ripped out a bit of the particle board.

I tried to glue it back with what I had on hand (Goop) but it wasn't strong enough to hold the weight of the door. It would be easy enough to move the hinge higher or lower to match different holes that are not damaged if it weren't for the fact that the hinge is inset into the door and I'd like to avoid trying to router out a new space for it.

Not sure if you've gooped up the holes or not but when I've done very similar things I've treated it like stripped screwhole and tried to jam a piece of wood into the hole (BBQ skewers or sometimes even pencils can work for this) and the screw into that instead. How wrecked is the hole itself?

I would try the repair again with wood filler. Just pack the hole full of the stuff and when it dries you can drive the screws right into it. Instru ... Read more »

#Home Decorating Ideas You ll Never Actually Do, But Really Want To

Mar 13, 2015 | Updated Apr 15, 2015

Katelyn Mullen Managing Lifestyle Editor, The Huffington Post

Something happens to your brain when you get lost in the vortex that is Pinterest. Especially when it comes to home decorating and design. You find yourself lost in a rabbit hole of outdoor swinging beds or laundry rooms that make separating your whites from your colors actually look like a good time.

But in reality, all those ideas you've pinned will likely fall into one of two categories: The attainable things you'll easily incorporate into your living space, or the things so fantastical, they never really make it beyond a Pinterest board.

The latter is clearly more fun. Which is why we've gathered some of the very best home decorating ideas we love to love, but know we'll never actually do.

#High Style Kitchen Mats and Rugs

Most kitchens are large expanses of flooring and cabinetry that be they gorgeous or hideous are silently crying out for character, identity or (in the hideous case) distraction. A kitchen mat or rug can be the perfect place to start. Not only will a rug bring personality to your space, it will also add comfort and warmth to an area full of hard surfaces.

That said, there are several things to think about when buying a rug for the kitchen:

Traffic - Kitchens are notoriously high traffic areas. You will need a rug that is safe, durable and easy to clean.

Size Shape - The size and shape of the rug you buy will depend upon the size and shape of your kitchen, and where you intend to use it within the space. If you’re looking for a mat to go in front of the sink only, a 2’ x 3’ rug works nicely. If you have a galley kitchen, a runner is a good bet. If you have an eat-in kitchen, something like a ... #Home - Independent Kitchen Price Comparisons

How long is a piece of string?

The cost of an installation by a professional fitter varies massively and is dependent on:
  • The amount of work involved (expected and relatively unexpected)
  • The quality and amount of material used

Installations cover the full spectrum

Some projects may be more of a refresh for example, replacing a few units, new doors, installing an island unit, whilst others are full scale refurbishments which include installation design and planning and the co-ordination of many skilled tradesmen for example, plumbers, tillers, plasterers, joiners and decorators.

Most kitchen installations are refurbishment rather than refresh and include the gutting and disposing of an existing kitchen, the installation of new units and appliances, the fitting of flooring, tiling and lighting and then decorating.

Professional kitchen fitters specialise in the installation ... Read more »

New Kitchen Designs with Nanotechnology | InteriorHolic.com

Ernestomeda, the market leader in designer kitchens of high-end class, introduced a new model Soul and a new layout model of Icon at the kitchen exhibition Eurocucina 2014, held in the framework of the Milan furniture exhibition I Saloni. The designs of the both kitchens were created by a talented designer Giuseppe Bavuso.

Soul kitchen by Ernestomeda

Soul concept is a mixture of modern design trends with vintage elements. The new fitted kitchen has a modern character, but the style and materials are borrowed from the past. One example of such a combination is a close coupled sink, which can be made of steel materials ICONcrete and Corian ®, and may also have a new finish of Piasentina Stone, Brown Chocolate Stone and Santafiora Stone, reminiscent of the trays for drainage, once found in gardens of suburban villas.

#Hoosier Kitchen Cabinets Sellers Napanee McDougall Antique Furniture

All of the Cabinets on this Page are FOR SALE

Antique Kitchen Cabinets

'Our Specialty'

The first piece of furniture we refinished was a 48" 'Napanee' kitchen cabinet.  That was 23 years ago.  Since that day we've been hooked on cabinets.  Our cabinets are stripped by hand inside as well as outside; and we use a hand-rubbed finish, not sprayed or brushed.

We put them back in as good a condition as they were when they where new.  As original as possible with hardware, sifters, sugar jars, spice racks and granites.

The Hoosier Manufacturing Company was founded in 1899 in Albany, Indiana.  A year later the factory burned and they moved to New Castle, Indiana.  At the height of their production years, the Hoosier Co. was making nearly 700 cabinets a day.

How to Build a Kitchen Corner Bench (7 Steps) | eHow

Measure and cut each wooden piece into the necessary lengths. Cut the three 2-inch-by-4-inch boards into two pieces measuring 2 feet long, two pieces measuring 3 feet long and two more pieces measuring 5 feet long. All ends should be flat and measured with a carpenter's tool to create a 90-degree angle with the length edge of each piece.

Measure and cut the plywood or OSB into two pieces, one that measures 2 feet by 5 feet and another that measures 2 feet by 3 feet. These two pieces will be placed together at the corner to construct the bench top. If you are especially handy, cut the plywood or OSB into one larger L-shaped piece that will measure 5 feet long along the outer corner, 3 feet in both directions along the inner corner, and 2 feet in width along the ends.

Construct the kitchen corner bench's support frame before installing the bench or applying the bench top. Start with one of the 2-foot-long pieces and ... Read more »

Kitchen Makeovers, Kitchen Decoration Ideas

The kitchen, a very expensive makeover.  This is not necessarily the case if you don t need to purchase new appliances or cabinetry, a quick change of floor and wall covering can make a huge difference. Add some new accessories, some colored crockery, glass vases, cooking utensil holders, new tea towels and you have a whole new look.

The most important thing to think about when making over a kitchen is functionality. You want to use what space you have efficiently. Ensure that you don t have to walk too far to perform the major tasks and that you can do them safely.

(Watch out for how cupboard doors open, adjoining doors, pantry doors, refrigerator doors and oven doors). I recently visited a kitchen, when the dishwasher door was down it was right against the wall and the end was butting up to cabinetry, that left only one side to load and unload from, limiting it s effectiveness, and for a short person lik ... What Are the Different Types of Kitchen Cabinet Hinges?

7,9,17,8,14,10,15,16,13,12

Visible and invisible are the two main categories of kitchen cabinet hinges. This means the hinge either shows on the outside of the cabinet doors or it's hidden because it's positioned inside the door, although many types of hinges are only partially hidden. Kitchen cabinet hinges are available in many different finishes, such as chrome, brass. copper, black, polished and hammered. The style and shape options of hinges are plentiful and the type of hinge to use on a particular kitchen cabinet depends on its design.

Flush or butt hinges are the most basic type of hinge and are not at all decorative. These are straight-edged rectangular hinges with the hinged section in the center and two or three holes on each side of it. The holes hold flat head screws. A butt or flush hinge fits flat on the frame of kitchen cabinets. Although this type of hinge doesn't add a decorative touch, it is ... Read more »

Kitchen Extensions Ideas : Home Interiors Blog

Posted on Apr 19, 2013 | Comments 0

Cooking isn’t something that people should dread. Usually this happens because they don’t have the right surroundings to inspire them to turn preparing food into art. The kitchen extensions ideas  may help them recognize the beauty in cooking and the new space could make spending time in the kitchen more appealing.

If you have the space for it, you might build a conservatory to the back of the house for a kitchen. It is a good idea to have pale wood cupboards, stainless steel appliances and limestone floor tiles. Add an island in the middle with a granite top that will also serve as a dining table.

In case you are interested in the extension ideas for kitchen, this is one to consider. To achieve a country style you should use old and new wooden beams. The kitchen island should have two main purposes: working and you can use the dining area to entertain guests.

#Home improvement - remodeling made easy: design, plan, purchase, build, hire a contractor and more!

Installing wall tile in the kitchen between the backsplash and the wall cabinets is an easy task to accomplish. Tile stands up to the necessary cleaning behind a range or cutting board better than paint and is very economical.

To start with, we have to make a few design decisions. The first one is to select the tile that appeals to you. Also, the color you choose for the grout should complement the tile color. Some like a dark grout to make the grout lines stand out.

The third design decision is the space that you will allow between the tile. The width of the grout line will determine whether you need sanded or non-sanded grout. Non-sanded grout should only be used when the grout will fill a gap 3/16 or smaller. Sanded grout may also be used on 3/16 grout lines but nothing smaller.

The wall where you are placing your tile should be clean a ... Read more »

#Homemade kitchen corner drawers

video Homemade kitchen corner drawers

These drawers were made as part of a major kitchen re-construction about 6 years ago. Today they are as good as ever so I thought others might like to see the construction details. I don't have many pictures taken from when i made the drawers but those of you into woodworking will get a good idea of what is involved with the construction by looking at the video.

I made a jig to keep everything in alignment when assembling the drawers but seems I didn't take a picture of it. The drawer bottoms are set in rabbits made in the sides of the drawers. As all drawer bottoms are identical they form the main way to align the drawers and keep them the same shape. The video shows how I modified the standard drawer pull to adapt them to the corner drawer. I selected pulls that mount with screws driven in from the outside of the pulls - works great for this application. Except for the drawer fronts (pine) the ... Read more »

How to Design a Kitchen Island (5 Steps) | eHow

Measure out your kitchen, and allow at least three feet from your cabinets to where you would like your island to begin. This is a minimum. A preferred distance is actually four feet.

Function:

Once you have your dimensions for the island, decide what the function of the island will be. Will you house a microwave inside the island? Studies show that below-counter microwaves are really a lot safer than above-counter microwaves because of the danger of spilling when removing hot objects from above. Will this be a 'baking center' with a marble or granite top, or will this be a warm family gathering place? Is this an island with a sink in it? Will this be a prep sink or the main sink?

New appliance designs, such as Sub Zero refrigerator or freezer drawers, can be conveniently tucked into any area, including a kitchen island. Just make sure you have clearance for opening and closing doors.

FUN DIY PROJECTS FOR YOUR HOME

Have you got tree stumps lying around outside? why not paint the tops of them and you ve got yourself some pretty handy side tables.

On a similar theme to the stump side tables what about using birch off cuts to create shelving units.

Have you got some salad servers that are looking a bit bland? Head to the hardware store and choose some colourful wood stain and dip the ends of the servers into the stain. The longer you hold the servers in the stain the deeper the colour will be so to create an ombre effect hold it on the stain less each time.

Not a fan of ugly electrical cords? no neither am I wrap your cords in some twine rope. Much more pleasant!

Another great DIY shelving idea. Use old crate boxes or even dresser drawers, paint and add wallpaper to the inside and hang at different levels.

In need of some bookends? Here s a few suggestions. Find some rocks outside and good quali ... Read more »

Just how does one create kitchens with that country style and look one sees in decorating magazines or other people's homes?

A country kitchen conjours up scrubbed pine tables and herbs. It's the heart of the home where people gather for meals, bake bread, can vegetables and fruit from the orchards, or just a place to sit and chat and share the happenings of the day.

#Home Repair: How to Fix Kitchen Cabinets

Build a shelf that won't sag

Heavy-duty replacement shelf

Don't bother replacing a sagging shelf with another 1/2-in.-thick shelf or it'll end up sagging too. Instead, cut a new shelf from 3/4-in. plywood. Make it the same length and 1-1/2 in. narrower (so you can add rails). Then glue and brad nail (or clamp) 1x2 rails along the front and back of the shelf, flush with the ends. The rails give the shelf additional support so it won't sag, even if you load it up with heavy cookware. Apply a polyurethane (or other) finish to match your other shelves.

Adjust Euro hinges

Door alignment trick

Adjusting cabinet doors with European hinges is as easy as turning a screw or two. Hinges like this one adjust in three directions; others adjust in two. If your door is crooked—not square with the cabinet—fix that first, then raise or lower it to the same height as adjacent doors.

For crooked doors, a ... Read more »

Click "Collaborate" to invite people to view or add to this ideabook.

How much is it going to cost? This inevitably comes up during an initial consultation for a remodeling project, and is important to address. As an architect, I usually provide ballpark ranges early on in the process to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that the scope of work we are talking about is realistic for the budget the homeowner has in mind. A more detailed construction estimate comes later, once a design has been completed.

Save

While the third option is indeed the most costly, it is usually well worth it for the improvement of space and functionality that can result. Things such as natural light and space flow may be less tangible than granite countertops, but they are infinitely more important in creating a space that feels g ... Read more »

How to Decorate the Tops of Kitchen Counters | eHow

Use accessories to create a kitchen that's functional and matches your design aesthetic. Invest in stoneware crocks to store utensils as well as labeled crocks for potatoes, onions and bulbs of garlic. This mix of stylish open and closed containers keeps essential items close at hand, and their beauty makes kitchen work pleasurable. For kitchens with ample counter space, bring in color with an oversized vase filled with fresh flowers or a herb garden nestled in a terrarium. For kitchens with less counter space, decorate with a single peony flower in a teacup.

Frequently used items and popular snacks often find their way out of the cabinets and pantry and onto the counters. Rather them leave them in their boxes, arrange them artfully in decorative and functional storage canisters. Kitchen Radiators and Heating Options

Kitchen heating wasn't a really problem in the dim and distant past since the kitchen would be used for cooking and the oven or stove would warm the room up, making radiators unnecessary.

But increasingly the kitchen is used as a family centre, particularly if it is a kitchen diner, and of course the oven isn’t used so much with microwave meals and convection ovens that put less heat out into the room. So trying to fit a radiator into a kitchen has become more of a priority.

Radiators are problematic in a kitchen though. The larger the room, the larger the radiator and the more space has to be given over to it.

Radiator positioning often puts limits on kitchen design because moving them is a tricky job, involving the repositioning of the inlet and outlet pipes. But there are some advances in heating technology that can help out.

#House sellers strip their homes bare before handing over the keys

By Laura Powell 00:07 11 Oct 2010, updated 16:28 14 Oct 2010

The carpets are ripped up, switches torn from walls and there are no light fittings, let alone light bulbs. Naked wires hang from the ceilings. There isn't even a toilet-roll holder. Most of the heating oil has been drained from the tank.

This isn't a squalid bedsit, far from it. This was the scene that greeted a couple when they sold their shipping business in Hong Kong and retired back to Britain to live in a £500,000 farmhouse near Totnes, a historical market town in South Devon.

The sellers were a couple in their mid-50s who had fallen on hard times. The husband had been made redundant from his banking job and, desperate to claw back money and sell fast, had agreed to an offer 15 per cent below the asking price  -  and begrudged every penny he lost.

Top 5 Things To Look For In A Kitchen Designer:

When it comes to increasing the value of your home, 1 way to do that is to renovate your

#How Much Does Refacing Kitchen Cabinets Cost?
Nov 16, 2011 8:30:00 AM

Selecting your cabinet design is one of the most important decision you will make when it comes to your kitchen remodel. The cabinets comprise the largest visible square footage in your design so, in most cases, they are the driving force when it comes to how your kitchen presents itself upon completion.

Thus, the decision becomes: do we rip everything out and build new custom cabinets, or do we reface the cabinets we have?

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets is an Efficient Solution Across the Board

Before we discuss the costs, it's important to understand what "cabinet refacing " really means. At the basic level, the cabinet refacing process preserves the skeleton and cabinet boxes and then adds a new finish, new door styles and potentially new interior cabinet and drawer organization as well. When Kitchen Magic does the job, you also benefit from our proprietary dou ... Read more »

How to Update Cabinets to a Shaker Style | eHow UK

Shaker-style kitchen cabinet doors with modern-style hardware handles.

Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images

Shaker style references historically important furniture made by the Shakers. This furniture was known for its simplicity of style and design and its focus on function over form. Shaker style became associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in architecture that emphasised natural woods and organic forms. This resulted in similar Shaker woodwork and trims being incorporated in many Arts and Crafts bungalows of the early 1900s. Creating a Shaker look on cabinets is one way to update a plain-faced cabinet into a more pleasing profile while still keeping the cabinet simple.

Remove the cabinet door from the cabinet and take off all hardware and hinges from the door. The best type of door to convert is a flat-panel style cabinet door.

Kitchen design - layout and planning

There are three stages to planning a kitchen:

    • Measuring up and noting the position of the existing services, windows and doors.
    • Working out the plan to get the appliances, work tops and cupboards where you want them.
    • Deciding on any changes to the services (electricity, water, drains) you need.

The following is intended to help you with the actual planning, but they are only suggestions and will not be practical in all situations, you will often have to compromise. The golden rule is - keep it simple - and remember that the kitchen is one of the main selling points for a house.

The principal activity zones in the kitchen are generally recognised as being - food preparation, cooking and serving, and finally washing up. Each activity zone needs to include the worktop(s) and appliances required for that activity, also the zone will require the storage space for the utensils, ingredient etc. ... Read more »

How to Buy a Cheap Kitchen Countertop (7 Steps) | eHow

Accurately measuring for countertops is probably the most critical step in this process. Removing the existing countertops makes measuring easier. Measure inches and record your measurements on graph or lined paper.

Determine the depth of the lower cabinets by measuring from the back wall to the front of the cabinet. Lower cabinets are usually set between 24 to 26 inches from the wall. Standard pre-made tops completely cover this space if the depth is within those measurements.

Measure the length of the countertops by holding the tapemeasure along the back of the cabinets against the wall. If the counter has an L shape, do the same kind of measurement on both lengths. Having the longest measurement of each section lets you know what size of pre-made top to purchase.

Purchase the top longer than your longest measurement. If your longest measurement is 90 inches, purchase a 96-inch piece. Some of the pre-m ... Read more »

    #How to choose a splashback

Splashbacks are large surfaces - and can be a real opportunity to add some colour to your kitchen. Image by Stegbar.

    What is a splashback?

A splashback is a protective surface on your kitchen wall, designed to protect it from water, greasy marks and splatters. Splashbacks perform a fairly basic task, but can make a big difference to the look of your kitchen. Identifying the right splashback for your kitchen will involve a bit of thought about your budget, and the style of kitchen you're building.

Budget - what do different splashbacks cost?

Will your splashback have a mosaic or pattern designed in? Do you require powerpoints? And are you able to get away with a standard (i.e. pre-cut) sized splashback? Many types of splashbacks - particularly those in a single piece like acrylic, stone or glass - will need to be custom-made with electricity point cut-outs built in, which will add to your costs.

    #How to Choose Kitchen Lighting

It is easy to overlook the importance of lighting when decorating your kitchen. You spend all that time picking out the best cabinets and appliances and then stick with the same flickering fluorescent fixture that came with the house. Kitchen lighting and ceiling fans can do more than just illuminate your kitchen; they can also decorate as well as accent the best parts of your kitchen design.

    Choosing Kitchen Lighting:

Decide what the most valuable function of your kitchen lighting is. For some people, just being able to see what you are cooking may be all you need from kitchen lighting. If you tend to eat in your kitchen a lot, you may want the power to dim the lighting to create a romantic ambiance. If you have a large kitchen, you may want to be able to provide more lights in one area than another, so you should consider task lighting fixtures, such as pendant lights.

#How to budget for a kitchen remodel

Here s How to Figure Out How Much Life Insurance You Need

What That Kitchen Remodel Will Really Cost You

    Robert A. Di Ieso, Jr.

Q: The bids for our kitchen renovation looked low until we realized they left out cabinets, appliances and such, which apparently we buy separately. Is there a way to ballpark those costs, so we can judge whether the project fits our budget?

A: Are you sitting down? The bids you received probably account for only a quarter to a third of your project costs, according to kitchen designer John Petrie, who owns Mother Hubbard s Custom Cabinetry in Harrisburg, Pa. and is president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, a trade group.

Many general contractors separate out cabinets, countertops, appliances, plumbing, light fixtures, tiles, and paint from their bids because the costs for these decorative items vary exponentially depending on what you choose. A ... Read more »

#How To: Building a Kitchen Island With Cabinets

    1. Assemble the cabinets upside-down and then measure. Clamp the cabinets together and attach using screws.

    2. Since upper cabinets do not automatically come with a toe-kick, one will have to be built. This project calls for an L-shaped toe kick using 2x4s. The toe-kick should be built so it sits 3 inches in on all sides of the cabinets and measures 4 inches high. Place spacers throughout the toe kick over the points where the cabinets meet. Once built, screw the toe-kick spacers to the cabinet.

    3. Flip the peninsula right-side-up and place it into position. Screw the new peninsula cabinets into the pre-existing ones.

    4. Place the MDF countertop on top of the peninsula cabinets. The countertop should hang 2 inches over the door side and 8 inches over the backside. The overhang on the backside will create added seating space. Attach the countertop by screwing up through the cabinets.

Tutorial: DIY Drawer Dividers Kitchen Edition | Hawk Hill

As I mentioned in my bedroom drawer divider post. spring means an attack on chaos at Hawk Hill and the kitchen did not escape my organizational wrath this year. Like most 1920 s homes, my kitchen is cute but tiny, and boasts only 4 drawers total! These drawers, as you can imagine, quickly become a jumbled mess that off-the-shelf drawer organizers are never tough enough or large enough to handle.

While construction grade foam board worked great for dividers for the bedroom dresser drawers, these high-traffic drawers needed tougher, thinner dividers to maximize storage space. Thin pine craft boards from the lumber yard worked perfect! 3/8 thick by 3 inches wide was the perfect thickness and width for my shallow kitchen drawers.

At about $1 per foot, I wanted to make sure I minimized waste when cutting the boards, so before even buying my boards I cleaned out my drawers completely and used strips of corrugated c ... Read more »

#How to buy a kitchen worktop

The most popular materials for kitchen worktops - laminate, granite, wood, glass, composite stone, stainless steel - have different advantages, so it's important to look at all the factors involved. Here's what you should consider before you buy.

    Practicalities of kitchen worktops

    * Think about practicalities, such as the maintenance of your worktop. If you have young children, a material that marks easily such as glass, is not ideal.

    * If you like cooking, consider a heat-resistant material such as granite around your hob, so that you can move hot pans off the heat and onto the worktop.

    * If hygiene is a concern, think about anti-bacterial materials, such as Corian or stainless steel. Remember that steel will scratch over time, creating a worn patina that some love, but if you want a pristine worktop, it might not be the right choice for you.
