#Kitchen magazines I can t tell you how excited I am to share here that next month, UT s Food Lab is hosting a Women Food Symposium that will feature Laura Shapiro. a food writer and culinary historian whose books, Perfection Salad, Something From the Oven and Julia Child, are the basis of any serious study of women, food, feminism and history. The free, half-day event is taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 18 at Gearing Hall on the UT campus, 200 W. 24th St. and in addition to Shapiro, the panelists include Jemima Code founder Toni Tipton-Martin, Eater Austin editor and QueerFlours.com blogger Meghan McCarron, San Antonio Current critic Jessica Elizarraras. Texas State sociologist Deborah Harris, Hip Girl s Guide to Homemaking author Kate Payne. Hillside Farmacy chef/owner Sonya Cote. former Baby Greens owner Sharon Mays, Bastrop Cattle Company rancher Pati Jacobs and freelance food writer Melanie Haupt . Chiming in via video chat are Spoon Fed author Kim Severson of the New York Times and Kim Voss, a frequent Feminist Kitchen guest writer who is working on her own book called The Food Section about the history of so-called women s pages in newspapers. Shapiro, a longtime columnist at Newsweek, has also written countless pieces for publications including Gourmet, Gastronomica, Slate and The New Yorker, and I m so excited to get to talk about gender in cookbooks with her and Mess of Greens author Elizabeth Engelhardt. The event is free and you can RSVP at utfoodlab.com . It s back-to-school time at the Feminist Kitchen! I ve been compiling a syllabus of sorts for the next year of the Feminist Kitchen book club + film series. As the name suggests, this monthly get-together isn t just about books, but we talk about movies, magazines, television, blogs and every other form of storytelling. Entering its third year. this book club group has evolved — as it well should — and I m excited about the line-up for the coming year. I don t usually announce a whole year s worth of books (etc) at the same time, but hopefully this will give you a chance to pencil in the dates (7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month) for the subjects you are interested in and get a head start on some of the books. October 8 — Cooked by Michael Pollan at Opa on South Lamar November 7 — Sylvia Plath’s “Ariel ” and Kate Lebo’s Pie Manifesto and “A Commonplace Book of Pie “ at BookWoman on North Lamar December 10 — Magazines. Specifically, Lucky Peach magazine, Issue 8 (the gender issue, which comes out in September) January 14 — Television. (Orange is the New Black, Downton Abbey, Girls, you name it.) February 11 — Movie, TBD (Ellen is hosting the Oscars on March 2, so we’ll pick one of this winter’s must-see pics that has a food tie-in.) March TBD — Feminist Kitchen SXSW meet up June — SKIP July — SKIP August 12 — “Dearie ” by Bob Spitz I ll try to keep any substitutions and date-swapping to a minimum and will announce all changes on the blog. My list of places to meet is growing: Uncle Billy s, BookWoman, Craft Pride, Tamale House East, Casa de Luz, House Wine, Rockin Tomato, Cenote, Contigo, Epicerie and, our birthplace, Thai Fresh. I m notorious for booking a meeting at a place that just happens to be packed at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday night, but I ll announce the locations at least a month in a advance. As always, anyone is welcome to join us, no RSVP required.
