#Need Ideas for Your Mosaic Tile Backsplash?

TIMELESS BACKSPLASH PATTERN IDEAS

For 5000 years mosaics have been a popular decoration in bathhouses, palaces, and now your kitchen. Learn how to get a stunning mosaic backsplash that will rival the Romans. We'll show you how to get started.

Mosaics are defined as small, glazed glass, stone, or tile pieces organized in a design or pattern. Some mosaics, like those in Roman bathhouses, depicted plants, animals, people, landscapes, etc. In the last 50 years, the most popular mosaic material has been the glazed ceramic 1 x 1 tile arranged in a geometric repeating pattern. More recently, the definition of mosaic is broadening to include uniquely shaped tiles, random designs, and modern art. Here are some mosaic backsplash ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

1 X 1 AND 2 X 2 TRADITIONAL BACKSPLASH PATTERNS

Square tiles limit you to just one layout: the grid. But you can put plenty of variation in this design with blends of colors, differing finishes, and varying textures. This layout is highly customizable.

You may want to consider non-square tiles for your mosaic. Diamonds, rectangles, hexagons, or ovals give you the same effect with just enough of a twist to make it unique. With non-square tiles, you have the option to change the layout a bit with vertical and horizontal placement of tiles.

Daltile offers mosaic blends in pre-fabricated blocks for easier installation.

Select 1 x 1 or 2 x 2 rectangular tiles and your layout options multiply. You can still include all the colors in your color scheme, different textures, etc. But the interest level increases as you change up the arrangement of the tiles.

BRICK, HERRINGBONE, AND CHEVRON BACKSPLASH DESIGNS

Brick pattern can be laid out horizontally or vertically with straight joints, or in a traditional offset brick joint. It s like subway tile in miniature and looks great in both kitchen and bathroom backsplashes.

Chevron pattern takes a series of rhombus tiles and joins them together to create a chevron. Daltile has four patterns to choose from that alternate colors and tiles sizes for a distinguished finished product. Each comes from our Limestone Mosaics collection, beautiful natural stone mosaics for your home.

Herringbone pattern alternates horizontal and vertical placements of the 2 x 1 tiles. It can also be done on the diagonal for a chevron-type effect. This mosaic is a classic that adds interest to a larger backsplash. You can use longer tiles if you desire for an even more eye-catching design.
