#All About: Double Bowl Sinks

Are you thinking about renovating your kitchen? If so, then our Sink Spotlight series will help you. Today we take a look at double bowl sinks .

Sink Style: Double Bowl

Distinctive Features: A rectangular sink with two side-by-side bowls or basins separated by a partition; bowls may be the same size or one may be smaller than the other. Common dimensions include 13"x18' for the smaller bowl and 30"x20" for the larger bowl.

Pros. Enables multi-tasking. One bowl can be used for food preparation and clean up, the other for washing and rinsing dishes, or wash dishes on one side, rinse on the other; very useful when there are multiple cooks in the kitchen.

Cons. Takes up more counter space; not ideal for small kitchens; often difficult to wash large pots and pans, as each bowl is smaller as a single unit than as one big partition-less whole.< ... Read more »

How to Build Open Kitchen Shelves | eHow

Long screws (and anchors for attaching to drywall only)

Power drill

Measure the length of the kitchen walls that will hold the open shelving. Decide whether to purchase "floating" shelves or shelves with visible support brackets.

Use a stud finder to locate the position of studs along the walls where the shelves will go. Use a pencil to mark these locations with an "X."

Buy the material for your shelving as well as decorative support brackets. Wood is popular choice for shelves; you can finish it in a variety of ways, and it's durable.

Use a power drill and screws to Install the brackets at the "X" marks you made in Step 2. After installing the first bracket, use a 4-foot level to ensure the next bracket is level with it. If you are installing a bracket into drywall, first insert a drywall anchor, then a screw. Tug on the bracket to make sure it feels solid and secure before installing the next one.

#Additional load of using kitchen sink waste disposal units on municipal wastewater treatment - Sustainable Living Stack Exchange

Additional load of using kitchen sink waste disposal units on municipal wastewater treatment

Organic (in the generally-from-an-organism sense of the word) waste can be difficult to dispose of from dwellings with no outdoor space for composting, and (in New Zealand, at least) it is not collected separately from general rubbish without incurring a substantial additional cost.

  1. Mix it in with the general non-recyclable waste
  2. Pay extra for commercial collection
  3. Use an under-sink waste disposal unit to pulverise the waste and dispose of it through the wastewater system, mixed with water

I've commonly heard references to the problems caused by mixing it with general waste, which include ... Read more »

#Acquiring Kitchen Equipment for Your Restaurant

New York has the Bowery. Chicago has Restaurant Row. Most major cities have this kind of restaurant supply street. Whether the products are new or used, you'll likely buy it here. If you're not located in a major city, going to one may be worth the trip, just for the money you can save and for the used equipment, but bring your bartering hat and do your homework.

Know what equipment you need for your operation and the menu you've chosen. Know what it costs new and used. Shop around. Check out equipment Web sites, national companies, local companies, and restaurant equipment auctions. Talk to other people in the business about their good experiences and bad ones. Get names from them about good companies to work with. If they can introduce you to someone specific, you'll be a step ahead.

Building a big kitchen is a huge expense. Consider hiring a consultant to advise you about purchasing equipment. Here's what a consult ... Read more »
