#Hoosier Kitchen Cabinets Sellers Napanee McDougall Antique Furniture

All of the Cabinets on this Page are FOR SALE

Antique Kitchen Cabinets

'Our Specialty'

The first piece of furniture we refinished was a 48" 'Napanee' kitchen cabinet.  That was 23 years ago.  Since that day we've been hooked on cabinets.  Our cabinets are stripped by hand inside as well as outside; and we use a hand-rubbed finish, not sprayed or brushed.

We put them back in as good a condition as they were when they where new.  As original as possible with hardware, sifters, sugar jars, spice racks and granites.

The Hoosier Manufacturing Company was founded in 1899 in Albany, Indiana.  A year later the factory burned and they moved to New Castle, Indiana.  At the height of their production years, the Hoosier Co. was making nearly 700 cabinets a day.

Although most of these Indiana built cabinets are called 'H ... Read more »

FUN DIY PROJECTS FOR YOUR HOME

Have you got tree stumps lying around outside? why not paint the tops of them and you ve got yourself some pretty handy side tables.

On a similar theme to the stump side tables what about using birch off cuts to create shelving units.

Have you got some salad servers that are looking a bit bland? Head to the hardware store and choose some colourful wood stain and dip the ends of the servers into the stain. The longer you hold the servers in the stain the deeper the colour will be so to create an ombre effect hold it on the stain less each time.

Not a fan of ugly electrical cords? no neither am I wrap your cords in some twine rope. Much more pleasant!

Another great DIY shelving idea. Use old crate boxes or even dresser drawers, paint and add wallpaper to the inside and hang at different levels.

In need of some bookends? Here s a few suggestions. Find some rocks outside and good quali ... Read more »

DIY Framed Kitchen Blackboard | House & Home

Post tonight's menu, bistro-style, with this DIY project.

Paint a swatch of black in a corner of the kitchen, frame it with crisp white moulding and let the board take over from messy notes and lists, or use it for an extra-large calendar or menu.

  • To prepare the surfaces, lightly sand the area with 120- or 140-grit sandpaper (this will allow the paint to adhere best to the surface). Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to clean away all dust.
  • Using low-tack masking tape, carefully tape off the area you will be painting.
  • Apply a coat of primer. Let dry overnight.
  • Apply a coat of blackboard paint. Let dry overnight.
  • Apply a second coat of blackboard paint. Let dry thoroughly.
  • If needed, apply a third coat. To let the final coat dry thoroughly, wait at least three days (and ideally seven) before writing on the blackboard surface.

#How to Choose Kitchen Lighting

It is easy to overlook the importance of lighting when decorating your kitchen. You spend all that time picking out the best cabinets and appliances and then stick with the same flickering fluorescent fixture that came with the house. Kitchen lighting and ceiling fans can do more than just illuminate your kitchen; they can also decorate as well as accent the best parts of your kitchen design.

Choosing Kitchen Lighting:

Decide what the most valuable function of your kitchen lighting is. For some people, just being able to see what you are cooking may be all you need from kitchen lighting. If you tend to eat in your kitchen a lot, you may want the power to dim the lighting to create a romantic ambiance. If you have a large kitchen, you may want to be able to provide more lights in one area than another, so you should consider task lighting fixtures, such as pendant lights.

How to Decorate the Tops of Kitchen Counters | eHow

Use accessories to create a kitchen that's functional and matches your design aesthetic. Invest in stoneware crocks to store utensils as well as labeled crocks for potatoes, onions and bulbs of garlic. This mix of stylish open and closed containers keeps essential items close at hand, and their beauty makes kitchen work pleasurable. For kitchens with ample counter space, bring in color with an oversized vase filled with fresh flowers or a herb garden nestled in a terrarium. For kitchens with less counter space, decorate with a single peony flower in a teacup.

Frequently used items and popular snacks often find their way out of the cabinets and pantry and onto the counters. Rather them leave them in their boxes, arrange them artfully in decorative and functional storage canisters. #How Much Does Refacing Kitchen Cabinets Cost?
Nov 16, 2011 8:30:00 AM

Selecting your cabinet design is one of the most important decision you will make when it comes to your kitchen remodel. The cabinets comprise the largest visible square footage in your design so, in most cases, they are the driving force when it comes to how your kitchen presents itself upon completion.

Thus, the decision becomes: do we rip everything out and build new custom cabinets, or do we reface the cabinets we have?

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets is an Efficient Solution Across the Board

Before we discuss the costs, it's important to understand what "cabinet refacing " really means. At the basic level, the cabinet refacing process preserves the skeleton and cabinet boxes and then adds a new finish, new door styles and potentially new interior cabinet and drawer organization as well. When Kitchen Magic does the job, you also benefit from our proprietary dou ... Read more »

Kitchen Cupboard Paint Colors | eHow

White and other light tones are a classic choice for kitchen cabinets, and have the advantage of making spaces look bigger. Country-style kitchens can benefit from white cabinets. However, in a kitchen where the walls are already white, cabinets that are too pale may fade into the background. White cupboards in a spacious kitchen can make the room feel barnlike and echoing. In these cases, consider painting the walls a darker tone first, or tint the paint with another color to provide visual interest.

Another traditional kitchen color, yellow is valued for its warm feeling and works well in rooms that don't get much natural sunlight. According to Better Homes and Gardens, yellow creates a warm, welcoming kitchen and is best used in dark kitchens or kitchens positioned on the north side of the home. Yellow blends in well with wood tones and a number of other colors, so it may work well with existing d cor. Choose pale or muted yellows and ... Read more »

#House sellers strip their homes bare before handing over the keys

By Laura Powell 00:07 11 Oct 2010, updated 16:28 14 Oct 2010

The carpets are ripped up, switches torn from walls and there are no light fittings, let alone light bulbs. Naked wires hang from the ceilings. There isn't even a toilet-roll holder. Most of the heating oil has been drained from the tank.

This isn't a squalid bedsit, far from it. This was the scene that greeted a couple when they sold their shipping business in Hong Kong and retired back to Britain to live in a £500,000 farmhouse near Totnes, a historical market town in South Devon.

The sellers were a couple in their mid-50s who had fallen on hard times. The husband had been made redundant from his banking job and, desperate to claw back money and sell fast, had agreed to an offer 15 per cent below the asking price  -  and begrudged every penny he lost.

Packing up: But some sellers are taking more than their washin ... Read more »

#How much do kitchen cabinets really cost?

Ok, so I should probably get a consultation with an expert somewhere, but at this point I'm thinking paint instead of total replacement.

However, I did go look at some cabinets at Home Depot and really liked the Thomasville Cottage Cabinets in Brierwood finish. The display said that a 10 by 10 kitchen would cost $3,300. The guy that worked there said to double that number, so $6,600. Is this number about right, for just cabinets and no installation or am I still being lowballed?

It's hard to give a range, it depends on so many factors. We chose Brookhaven (made by woodmode), and ours are almost 30K, not including installation, for a 24 x 20' kitchen. For our remodel, we spent the bulk of our budget on cabinetry, because that is a big ticket item and I'm hoping that they will withstand the test of time. I figure that things like light fixtures, faucets, etc. will need to be switche ... Read more »

Different Kitchen Lighting Ideas for Your Home.

Recessed or Can lights are a popular lighting option for kitchens. Their ability to install within a ceiling allows for a smooth, seamless look that is appealing to many homeowners. Their inconspicuous design makes them easy to decorate around without being distracting or detracting from other design elements.

Track lights are a favorite among homeowners because they are versatile and easy to install. Unlike recessed lights that install in the ceiling, track rail lights are mounted flush against the ceiling in either T, L, or H shaped patterns. However, a flexible monorail track system allows you the freedom to bend the track into your desired shape.

Flush mount lights are a unique way to illuminate your kitchen. Thinking about flush mount lights may conjure up images of your outdated grandmother s house, but fear not. Flush mount lights have been updated with a fresh and modern look that many home ... Read more »

Kitchen Tune-Up in Centreville, VA: Stores on washingtonpost.com

Redoing a kitchen can cost a lot -- sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. But if you're looking for a quick fix on a limited budget, companies like Kitchen Tune-Up might be the answer.

The company was started in 1988, when president David Haglund developed an oil designed to clean surface scratches and restore wood finishes to their original look. From a door-to-door operation in Aberdeen, S.D. Kitchen Tune-Up has grown to more than 300 franchises across the country that restore, reface or replace kitchen cabinets.

"You could say we try to give a kitchen solution for any budget," says Dan Tokarski, who with his wife, Mary, has been the Washington area's Kitchen Tune-Up team since 1994.

The former corporate education specialist turned a side job doing home improvements into a full-time endeavor after three of his four daughters were through college.

Ideas for a Table in a Small Kitchen | eHow

Your available space, style preferences and functional needs will dictate your decisions when choosing a table for your small kitchen. Accurate measurements of your kitchen space are useful when you begin to shop for small tables. When you start shopping, factor in both the size and shape of the table. A round table allows for several chairs to be spaced around the table, but a rectangular table can be tucked into a corner and pulled out when the extra seating is needed. If you have an additional dining space, the kitchen table needs only to offer additional seating, but, if all of your eating will be done in the kitchen, the table must be large enough to seat all members of your household.

Make the most out of the nooks and crannies in your existing kitchen with a built-in table setup. A window bench seat offers ample space for dinner guests, and a long, narrow banquet table provides just enough space for casual breakfasts or lun ... Read more »

Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Sometimes Homemade

Recently I tackled the project of painting my kitchen cabinets. It was a lot of work, but the end results were so worth it!

After painting our bathroom vanity last winter, I really thought hard about also painting my kitchen cabinets too, which had the exact same honey oak cabinets. I knew it would be a big project. When I did the first bathroom I sanded, primed, painted and put a finish coat on them. Here s a link to the post I did on painting honey oak cabinets. I really liked the outcome and had planned to use the same method. but then I ran across an article in Better Homes and Gardens about various techniques for painting kitchen cabinets and they mentioned a product from Rust-Oleum specifically made for cabinets that didn t require sanding. WHAT. No sanding? I was skeptical but willing to give it a try, so I bought the kit last summer and did our upstairs bathroom vanity as a test run. I chose a similar espresso color as I ... Concrete Countertops for the Kitchen - A Solid Surface on the Cheap

Redoing a kitchen or bathroom with concrete countertops is a home improvement project you can do yourself. While it takes some time — be prepared to spread the work out over several weekends because of the time required for curing — you will save yourself the high cost of purchased granite or marble countertops.

This tutorial will provide all the information you need for planning, creating your own forms and molds, making joints, and distributing the poured concrete. I figured all of this out because I wanted to redo the kitchen in my 1916 Foursquare and I was bored with all the countertop options. (Unless you're getting formica, they all cost about the same as granite or marble, look just like granite or marble, and are as typically typical as granite or marble.) The one material I found that was much more customizable than the other solid surfaces was concrete. Concrete’s colors and textures are endless, ... Read more »

How Do I Choose the Best Kitchen Roll Holder? (with picture)

15,7,12,14,8,16,10,13,9,17

A kitchen roll holder, or paper towel holder. is one of the small elements of a kitchen that is missed if it is not there and useful when it is. The best holder will be one that both matches the decor of the kitchen and also is functional. Some kitchen roll holders are vertical, free-standing and can be moved as needed. Others are horizontal and need to be mounted on a wall. The design of the kitchen will help to determine which holder will work the best.

One of the most basic designs for a kitchen roll holder is a simple vertical rod attached to a heavy base. These can be made from marble, wood, plastic or metal. This design is the best in a kitchen where the user might find it more convenient for the holder to be portable. It also can be the best design when there is not a clear area of wall space where a horizontal holder can be mounted.

My kitchen has cherry-stained cabinets, dark granite countertops, light birch wood floors, and the walls were painted a sage-y green. It was like this when we moved in, and the longer I lived with it, the more I was desperate for a change.

I'm not here to disparage cherry cabinets or granite countertops; the cabinets in my kitchen are solid wood and spacious, and I know granite has its advantages. so there is a lot to be thankful for. However, I will say that if I were to design my dream kitchen, these elements would probably be on the opposite spectrum of what I'd go for. I'm just more of a white-and-wood kind of person, not a cherry-and-granite kind of person.

Here's what the kitchen looked like when we moved in:

DIY Kitchen Chalkboard

When we built the cabinet around the refrigerator it not only gave the area a nice built-in look but it also left us with a giant blank canvas on the adjacent wall. Honestly, from the time we drew up the layout of our new kitchen, I had it set in my mind what that blank space would be. We DIYed a floor to ceiling chalkboard wall with a painted calendar in our first house and I have been dying to have some chalkboard back in my life. Insert, our new chalkboard wall

We started by priming the area with a few coats of Rust-Oleum s magnetic primer so the chalkboard would double as a magnet board. I know as the girls get older they will be loving this space to chalk on and play with their magnetic letters. Speaking of, how cute are these stainless steel letters from Pottery Barn? Must have.

We followed with three coats of Valspar s Chalkboard Paint in a basic black and she was ready for chalking. Well, almost. You know how we love our built-ins, so ... Read more »

What Are Advantages of Cherry Kitchen Cabinets? (with picture)

12,15,9,16,10,14,13,8,17,7

One of the obvious advantages of cherry kitchen cabinets is the fact that they are made from real wood. Solid wood cabinets are not only beautiful; they are also high quality furnishings that last a long time. While they may require special care, they can also endure better than cabinetry made of pressed wood particles, or pressboard. They tend to cost more than some types of cabinets; yet lower quality cabinetry may need to be replaced more often making cherry the better value.

Cherry kitchen cabinets are considered by some to be mid-range. They aren’t the cheapest or the most expensive. Cherry is also referred to as medium strength wood, so it is durable enough for extended use. It makes sense that it is a popular choice for cabinetry, since many homeowners see cabinets as an investment that they hope will last.

Another advantage to purchasing cherry kitchen cabinets ... Read more »

How to Buy a Cheap Kitchen Countertop (7 Steps) | eHow

Accurately measuring for countertops is probably the most critical step in this process. Removing the existing countertops makes measuring easier. Measure inches and record your measurements on graph or lined paper.

Determine the depth of the lower cabinets by measuring from the back wall to the front of the cabinet. Lower cabinets are usually set between 24 to 26 inches from the wall. Standard pre-made tops completely cover this space if the depth is within those measurements.

Measure the length of the countertops by holding the tapemeasure along the back of the cabinets against the wall. If the counter has an L shape, do the same kind of measurement on both lengths. Having the longest measurement of each section lets you know what size of pre-made top to purchase.

Purchase the top longer than your longest measurement. If your longest measurement is 90 inches, purchase a 96-inch piece. Some of the pre-m ... Read more »

What Are the Different Types of Shaker Kitchen Cabinets?

14,12,16,15,8,9,13,17,10,7

Although all Shaker kitchen cabinets will have straight lines and minimal details, differences in materials, finishes, hardware and frame types set apart the available cupboard options. A neat, simple look is the hallmark of the Shaker furniture, which dates to the 1700s when immigrants of the Shaker religion settled in the United States. Modern takes on Shaker cupboard doors often include glass inserts, which can be a great choice for displaying neat rows of dishes or glass canisters.

The width of the wood frame around the glass will vary widely in thickness on different Shaker kitchen cabinets. The combination of a smaller glass insert and a larger expanse of wood around it can be eye-catching in design. This overall look is still very Shaker in style, as the cabinet door will be smooth and look neat, yet the contrast of the two materials used in different amounts can be interestin ... Read more »

#How to buy a kitchen worktop

The most popular materials for kitchen worktops - laminate, granite, wood, glass, composite stone, stainless steel - have different advantages, so it's important to look at all the factors involved. Here's what you should consider before you buy.

Practicalities of kitchen worktops

* Think about practicalities, such as the maintenance of your worktop. If you have young children, a material that marks easily such as glass, is not ideal.

* If you like cooking, consider a heat-resistant material such as granite around your hob, so that you can move hot pans off the heat and onto the worktop.

* If hygiene is a concern, think about anti-bacterial materials, such as Corian or stainless steel. Remember that steel will scratch over time, creating a worn patina that some love, but if you want a pristine worktop, it might not be the right choice for you.

Kitchen design - layout and planning

There are three stages to planning a kitchen:

  • Measuring up and noting the position of the existing services, windows and doors.
  • Working out the plan to get the appliances, work tops and cupboards where you want them.
  • Deciding on any changes to the services (electricity, water, drains) you need.

The following is intended to help you with the actual planning, but they are only suggestions and will not be practical in all situations, you will often have to compromise. The golden rule is - keep it simple - and remember that the kitchen is one of the main selling points for a house.

The principal activity zones in the kitchen are generally recognised as being - food preparation, cooking and serving, and finally washing up. Each activity zone needs to include the worktop(s) and appliances required for that activity, also the zone will require the storage space for the utensils, ingredient etc. ... Read more »

The Old World style of decor is taken from the medieval and Renaissance periods, according to the website Home Decorating Made Easy. Old World furniture has a heavy look. Beds tend to have large posters, and chairs have ornate backs in dark wood. Fabrics for bedding and window coverings in Old World style are heavy and dark. Brocade and velvet are often used in Old World decor. Window coverings are tied back with braided ropes for detail. Colors used in Old World decor are often grays, browns and golds. Floors are typically hardwood with rugs in neutral colors.

French Country decor is characterized by a sophisticated, antique look. #How to Build a DIY Kitchen Island - Cherished Bliss

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Frigidaire and Lowe s. All opinions are 100% mine.

When we decided to have our Frigidaire Professional Appliances installed, we had a few things we wanted to change in our kitchen. I already shared with you how I altered our kitchen cabinet next to the stove and opened things up. I also took out some of our cabinets that were attached to the wall and built a walk around DIY kitchen island.

In the winter we use the back door in the kitchen to enter our house, but there is never a place to take off our shoes since the door would open straight into the cabinets. Now we can fully open the door and make room for everyone. The kitchen is also the room where everyone seems to congregate, so it s nice to have a place were people can gather around and eat snacks or serve meals!

Building an Island might sound a little scary, but it s not as hard as you might think! ... Read more »

#How to Calculate Kitchen Range Hood Fan Size

How to Calculate Kitchen Range Hood Fan Size

Kitchen range hoods that are vented to the outside are a great way to remove heat, odors, moisture, and smoke from your home when cooking. The fans in range hoods are rated by the cubic feet of air they move per minute (CFM), and it’s important to buy a range hood that moves enough air to be effective. Below are several different ways to calculate the CFM for a range hood.

Range Hood Fan Size

The basic rule of thumb when determining the fan size of a range hood is that it should move a minimum of 100 CFM of air for every 12” of stove width. So if you have a 30” wide stove, you would need a range hood with a fan that moves at least 250 CFM of air:

2.5 wide stove x 100 = 250 CFM minimum range hood fan size

Room Size

You should also take into account the size of your kitchen in cubic feet when calculating the size range hood fan need ... Read more »

#How to Build a Custom Kitchen Island

Cut Stock Cabinets to Size

Begin by choosing the look and type of material you would like to work with, including stock cabinets, molding, toe kick, glazes, feet and corbels (Image 1).

The stock cabinets may have to be trimmed down so that the height of the cabinets is the same. The easiest way to do this is to adjust the height of the toe kick. Using a square to determine where to cut the height of the toe kick, line it up from the existing toe kick and make a straight, level line (Image 2).

Before making any cuts, inspect the cabinet for any staples, nails or screws and remove them before cutting. With a trim saw, cut along the toe kick reference line (Image 3).

Tap the toe kick a few times with a hammer and one side of it should pop right off. Cut the other side of the toe kick.

To create a recessed toe kick on both sides of the island, measure 3 along the side of the toe kick and use a reciprocating ... Read more »
