Like walking back in time, furniture designer Nathan Chandler opened the door on a home he bought in 2010 and found the kitchen in nearly original condition from when it was built in 1956. For some reason the original owners built the house but never lived in it, keeping it sealed away and rarely using the pastel pink General Electric appliances that were installed from the start.

While you could watch old I Love Lucy or Leave it to Beaver episodes to get a look at mid-century kitchens, it’s not really the same in black and white. Even old color films don’t look quite the same as reality. Here we are treated to a modern day vision of exactly what some industrious ’50s housewives were dealing with top loading dishwasher, cupboard mounted refrigerator and all.

#A modern kitchen colour scheme of warm neutrals

Kirsty and James recently purchased their first home with the 1980s cream on cream on cream theme throughout. With the kitchen being extremely outdated they decided that was the best place to start renovating and as the lounge, dining and kitchen are open plan, they tackled these areas as their first major project.

Resene paints gave them the most economical way to update - all they had to provide was the elbow grease (and two parents to help sand, wipe and paint!). Preparation was a long and tedious chore but the Resene paint finish was glamour galore! They began with the ceiling using white Resene Ceiling Paint. Walls throughout were coated in Resene Tea, which was complemented by the windows and architraves in Resene Quarter Tea and highlighted by the passage doors in Resene Triple Tea.
