#Ideas for the Kitchen: Cabinet Door Inserts

Step 1: Decide on new door inset material

Installing new panels in old cabinet doors can really dress up a kitchen (and new panels are a lot cheaper than new cabinets). Insert materials include glass, translucent plastic, copper, metal, fabric, wicker and many others. Adding “feature” inserts to just one or two of your cabinet doors can be striking and very inexpensive. Our homeowners decided to install perforated metal inserts in all of their upper cabinet doors. They initially wanted to use stainless steel to match their appliances, but went with aluminum after discovering that it costs a third of the price and has a similar look (see “Buying Metal Inserts,” below, for tips on ordering).

Kitchen Tongs

There are two kinds of Kitchen Tongs.

One type is made from two pieces of heavy wire joined like scissors; the other is two pieces of light metal joined at the end, usually with a spring as well. That being said, the material doesn't have to be metal: it can be metal and plastic, plastic, wood or bamboo.

Plastic ones are fine for salads, buffets, salad bars, etc.

Kitchen Tongs come in different lengths. Long-handled ones are particularly important when cooking over an open flame or splattering grease, because they mean your hands don't need to come near danger.

Scissor-type ones are fine for smaller pieces of food. To use them, you have to slide one finger through a hole in one of the handles, as you do for scissors.

Tongs whose holding ends have scalloped food-gripping parts can allow a more stable grip when lifting large items.

Corner Kitchen Cabinet; Corner Cabinets and Idea for Space Saving in the Kitchen

This section on corner kitchen cabinets will help you solve a space problem that occurs in most kitchens - what to store in the corner cabinet and which corner cabinet solution fits this requirement.

Let us, first of all, show you the two basic configurations for base corner units.

Above. This first solution demonstrates how to fit a 1000mm base unit as a corner kitchen cabinet. Note the gaps that should be left against the side wall and the adjacent unit. The difficulty with this configuration is, what to store in the area of the kitchen cabinet that is difficult to get to.

This unit is ideal for fitting into an existing 800-1000mm wide corner cabinet unit. All four chrome wire baskets slide out on a easy flow mechanism to allow great access to loads of corner space.

#How to Tile Your Kitchen Backsplash in One Day

Tiling a Kitchen Backsplash in One Day

Everyone loves instant gratification. One problem with kitchen remodeling, though, is that gratification is often achieved slowly and laboriously.

So, for the sake of your sanity, you sometimes need to dip your hand into projects that can be finished quickly and offer eye-popping results. Backsplashes are just that kind of project: fast, beautiful, practical, and yes, instantly gratifying.

Why Backsplashes Stand Out

Spend a weekend painting a ceiling, and people never notice. Replace your windows to the tune of several thousand dollars, and guests politely say, “Hmm, nice.”

But backsplashes attract immediate attention. More importantly, you will feel like you have made major inroads toward creating a brand-new kitchen – for little more than you would spend on a weekend trip.

The reasons are because kitchen backsplashes are:

#How to Tile a Backsplash

COST

Project overview: Planning, materials and tools

Nothing packs more style per square inch than mosaic tile. So if your kitchen's got the blahs, give it a quick infusion of pizzazz with a tile backsplash. Because the small tiles are mounted on 12 x 12-in. sheets, installation is fast. You can install the tile on Saturday and then grout it on Sunday.

Professionals charge about $20 per sq. ft. for installing the tile (plus materials), so you'll save $20 for every sheet you install yourself. The sheets cost $8 to more than $20 each at home centers and tile stores.

The total cost for our backsplash was about $200. Our sheets cost $10 apiece plus adhesive and grout. For an 8-ft. backsplash, you could save about $45 by using a less expensive tile. We chose slate tiles, which sometimes crumble when you cut them. Other types of mosaic tile, especially ceramic tiles, are easier to cut.

#Ideas for Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Wall Color Schemes

White cabinets create a clean, fresh kitchen design.

When you update your kitchen cabinets with a new paint color, it's important to ensure that your new cabinet color coordinates with your wall color. Your wall color might have looked appealing with your original cabinets, but newly renovated cabinets often require new, complementary wall colors. White Cabinets and Earth Tone Walls

White cabinets look appealing with almost any wall color, but earth tone walls support rustic, country, Spanish, modern, cottage, industrial and Mediterranean themes. Opt for taupe, soft gray, tan, yellow-gold or mocha brown walls to create a kitchen design that allows your newly painted white cabinetry to stand out in the room. Select brush ... Read more »

#Ikea has created the kitchen of 2025

IKEA didn't just imagine the kitchen of the future. It actually built it.

The Concept Kitchen 2025, a pop-up exhibit featured at EXPO Milano 2015, isn't about your kitchen and its appliances doing all the work for you; it's about helping you make thoughtful decisions about food and waste.

Innovations are everywhere. And much conventional thinking about what a kitchen actually requires has been thrown out the window. This is the kitchen reimagined for a time when the Internet of Things defines our lives.

The kitchen was developed with IDEO London, a global design firm, and college students focused on "the social, technological, and demographic forces that will impact how we behave around food in 2025." Check out all the bells and whistles below.

Welcome to 2025. This is what your kitchen looks like.

Tried And True Tricks From 'America's Test Kitchen' : NPR

Want the perfect pie crust? Christopher Kimball from America's Test Kitchen says the secret is to substitute half of the recipe's water with vodka, for a dry, flaky crust. iStockphoto.com hide caption

More on this book:

Making sure amateur chefs can re-create recipes designed by professional chefs is of utmost importance, Kimball tells Fresh Air 's Terry Gross.

"We bring people into our kitchen and watch people cook our recipes and send our recipes out by email, and we know that what people do with those recipes bears little resemblance to what we do with them," says Kimball. "For example, they will substitute ingredients with great abandon. They will never read the recipe ahead of time."

Kimball remembers a chicken recipe from several years ago. One man wrote in to say it was the worst chicken recipe he'd ever made. Turns out, the man didn't hav ... Read more »

#IHeart Organizing: Organizing Under the Kitchen Sink

12 Organizing Under the Kitchen Sink

I have no idea how it happened, but this past week was one of those blink-and-it-is-over type of weeks. All of the sudden it was Friday morning and I was hit with the realization that I hadn't organized one single thing all week. The horror right?

As far as our kitchen goes, the good news is that we have begun installing trim, toe kick and moulding! I am hoping to have a full kitchen update for y'all very soon; we definitely needed to step back and take a small break to troubleshoot a few issues that have come up as we near the end of the renovation. One problem is in regards to a major appliance/kitchen island snafu. We also have some cabinet moulding decisions to make and the Mr. and I are not seeing eye-to-eye. We appreciate you hanging in there as we work through some of those detailed decisions that we just don't feel comfortable rushing.

#IKEA s New SEKTION Cabinets: Sizes, Prices & Photos!

As we wrote a few months ago. IKEA is retiring their AKURUM cabinet system and replacing it with SEKTION, a more modular system that promises to be even easier to work with and customize.

What's New With IKEA's SEKTION Kitchen System

SEKTION Cabinet Sizing

Cabinets: Available in four heights — 15, 20, 30 and 40 inches — and two depths — 15 and 24 inches.

Note that the 15-inch depth increased from AKURUM's 12-inch depth, so there's even more storage space now.

Door Fronts and Drawers: Available drawer heights range from 5 to 60 inches, and come in at two price points depending on their features. Door fronts and drawers can be put anywhere in the system and in any configuration. For example, you can choose to have one larger door front cover multiple drawers.

#Ikea Stenstorp Kitchen Trolley - My Fussy Eater

A review of the Ikea Stenstorp Kitchen Trolley

2C1020" /% Ok so this is a slightly different post than usual it s not a recipe or a food review but something I purchased for my kitchen recently which I absolutely love and thought it might be useful to share if anyone is looking for something similar for their own home.

Recently I ve been getting more and more frustrated about worktop space in my kitchen. My kitchen is a decent size but I never seem to have enough worktop space, especially if I m making several recipes at once, or cooking a particular ingredient-heavy meal. So I looked into ways of adding additional space that wouldn t take up too much room. My budget was tight but I found some really great solutions in Ikea. They have a few different types of kitchen trolleys but the Stenstorp model was my favourite.

Country Kitchen Design - Pictures and Decorating Ideas

Country Kitchen Design Ideas: Some kitchens are made to be admired at a distance; country kitchens are made to be used. Their down-to-earth style and lived-in looks make country kitchens among the most comfortable and inviting rooms to be in.

Mismatched chairs at the kitchen table, a farmhouse sink with a fabric skirt, oak hardwood floors, butter yellow walls, and a red brick range hood add character and charm to this country style kitchen.

Essential Elements: Farmhouse sinks, beadboard panels, and open shelving are trademarks of country kitchen designs. Knotty wood cupboards or painted and glazed cabinets with simple styling provide a traditional country feel that's not too stuffy. Popular cabinet styles include the standard raised panel or beaded flat panel cabinet doors with a simple frame.

#Imagine Silent Hills on PS4’s Morpheus VR… oh, that’s new horror game Kitchen

#Improving reception of under-cabinet kitchen radio - antenna resolved

I have a Sony ICF-CD543-RM kitchen radio/CD player that mounts under a cabinet. It has poor FM radio reception for stations that come in fine on other radios.

It has a two-foot-long power cord, and moving this and/moving myself around the kitchen affects the reception.

The Amazon page indicates that there is no external antenna input. The AM antenna is internal. The FM antenna is the power cord. So you don't have a lot of great choices other than positioning the power cord where it gets the best reception.

Perhaps the best of your bad choices is to plug the radio into an extension cord (a cheap extension cord is fine, the longer the better) and play around with placement of the extension cord. Positioning the cord higher, closer to the outside wall, should give the best results, but the mere fact of increased antenna length should make the biggest difference.

    Best Time Saving Kitchen Appliances

Ever since the invention of the bread maker, hasn't life been more comfortable than we imagined? Well, I don't literally mean a particular time frame, but as technology advances, the average man's lifestyle changes as well; and that too for the better. With various transportation facilities, we can go from one place to another in a short span of time. Heck, the world literally has become so small that anyone can purchase tickets to visit any part of the world, whenever they felt like it. So when it came to kitchen appliances, there have been some life-altering changes there as well.

As a kid, I always used to see my grandmother in the kitchen, working for hours to prepare food; especially when it came time to bake cookies. Of course, we had a small oven in the house, but the technology that was used in those old ovens was nothing compared to what we see today. And hence, it did take her few hours to make certain items in the kitchen. But ... Read more »

Understanding Benefits of Modular Kitchen Designs and the Basic Concepts Behind | kwikdeko

Modular kitchen, a concept which has revolutionized Indian kitchens and made it easy for you to organize every single item in your cooking area.

One of the most important reasons behind the evolution of this concept of modular kitchen designs is to get a clutter-free and well organized kitchen area, no matter you have a small home or a spacious one a modular kitchen is for every home owner.

    Modular Kitchen

Before I jump to modular kitchen designs, let me first explain what it actually means?  A modular kitchen is a layout with pre-manufactured modules or parts for effective and efficient use of the space provided in the kitchen. Its layout and design completely depends upon the available space in your kitchen.

The installation of a modular kitchen involves the floor and the walls as well; the cabinets and the storage ... Read more »

Ideas for Pool Houses with Outdoor Kitchens | eHow

Create a dining area either inside the pool house or as an extension to accommodate guests while they eat food freshly cooked from the outdoor kitchen. Keep the furniture casual and water resistant so guests feel comfortable getting out of the pool and heading straight to the dining area. Setting up a dining space in the pool house creates a cool, shaded retreat from the sun. Construct a dining area as an extension of the pool house by creating a patio off the side of the house or near the outdoor kitchen. Cover this space with a pergola or canvas canopy to provide a barrier from the sun.

Pool houses with outdoor kitchens are similar to a guest house because visitors have access to a personal space inside the pool house and a kitchen outdoors. Creating a bedroom and bathroom inside the pool house turns the pool house into a comfortable guest quarters. Do not turn a single room pool house with a bathroom into a bedroom with ... Read more »

How to Build Slide-Out Shelves for the Kitchen | eHow

    Wood finishing supplies (as needed)

Draw level lines across both interior sides of the cabinet to represent the bottom edge of each shelf.

Open the cabinet door all the way, and measure any obstructions in the cabinet opening, such as hinges. The largest dimension determines the thickness of spacers to use, if required. With most cabinets, 1-by-3 (3/4 inch thick) or 2-by-3 (1 1/2 inches thick) lumber provides sufficient clearance for the shelves.

Cut two spacers for each shelf so that the spacers extend from the front edge to the back panel along each side of the cabinet. Cut the spacers with a circular saw. Position each spacer with its bottom edge on a reference mark (made in Step 1) and fasten it to the cabinet side with glue and wood screws. If an outer side of the cabinet is exposed and screws could come through and show on the outside, use metal L-brackets and screws to mount the spacer strips to th ... Read more »

Figure 1 - Cabinet hinge parts

There are numerous different styles of hinges available and each style comes in assortment of finishes. In this article we will discuss the most common cabinet door hinge styles.

    • It is important to remember that the style of the hinge is not an indicator of the quality of the hinge. In each hinge style the homeowner can purchase low, medium and high quality hinges.

#Inside Ultra-Luxury Kitchens: Trends Among Wealthy Buyers Who Rarely Cook

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

Designers tired of all-white are pushing their clients toward cabinetry in darker hues. Above, a rendering of the kitchens at Manhattan's Puck Penthouses. The most expensive is priced at $60 million.

One evening about five years ago, the Long Island-based developer Steven Klar hosted a small dinner for friends in his swanky Manhattan penthouse. There was no special occasion, he says, other than trying out a few wines and food cooked by Daniel Boulud, the chef Klar hired to cater the evening. “Daniel was very happy and said he wanted to move in because he enjoyed cooking so much in that kitchen,” Klar says.

Though Klar hasn’t cooked regularly since his Army days 38 years ago, when he worked in a kitchen that served 1,000 men (eggs to order, birthday cakes for officers), he nonetheless put a commercial-grade kitchen in his penthouse ... Read more »

    #Installing Under-Cabinet Lighting

    3. Depending on the kit, it may be better to wire the lights under the cabinets and staple the wires up, or it may be better to do all the wiring on top of the cabinets, and drill down thru the cabinet to get the wire the light. It will depend on the type of cabinets installed. If they are face-frame cabinets, there is a recess in the bottom to hide the wires, so all wiring can be done there.
