How to Create a Kitchen Island from Existing Furniture | eHow

Place the dresser in the center of your kitchen to ensure it is the right height for a standing workstation. The dresser should be about level with your current countertop. If the dresser is too tall and has legs that extend from its base, the legs can be removed or cut down to lower the dresser. If the dresser is too short, add wheels to the existing base for added height. Walk around the dresser and make sure there is ample space to move about your kitchen. You may need to find a smaller piece of furniture for a smaller kitchen, or a larger piece of furniture if there is too much space between your island and your countertop.

Install the towel bars on the right side of the dresser according to the instructions on the package. One towel bar can be installed horizontally along the top border of the dresser and can be used to store dish towels. The second bar can be installed below the first one in the same manor or can be installed vertically along the outer edge of the dresser to be used for storing a role of paper towels. If one bar is used for paper towels, be sure to leave enough space between the two bars for a full role of paper towels to fit and turn.

Drill holes across the top of the left side of the dresser according to the instructions for the towel hooks. These hooks can be used to hang pots or pans that are used most often.

Organize your pots, pans and bakeware in the drawers. Most dressers will have three drawers that can be used for plenty of storage. Drawer organizers can also be used for storing cooking utensils and knives.
