#I need to buy a kitchen. Life in Germany - Toytown Germany

laurenk 2

Posted 14 Jun 2012

First off, I currently live in the States, so it's next to impossible to find a kitchen without looking at it. Second, I finally found an apartment, and *thought* I'd be able to buy the kitchen off the current renter. but she sold it to her aunt's boyfriend after she said she'd sell it to the next renter. So now I'm up the creek without a paddle.

So, I have a few questions.

1. I've found, by searching online for the past few hours, that most kitchens (that claim to be complete) come without fridges/ovens/etc. How can one ensure one is finding a *complete* (WITH fridge/oven/sink/etc) kitchen?

2. Where (aside from IKEA) can one locate a complete kitchen (or where would you recommend I look)? I'll arrive in Germany (NRW) in 3 weeks and can't get the apartment until 15 July.

3. What is a 'fair' price (or 'typical' price) for a compl ... Read more »

#Illustrative Mathematics

Task

Fred has some colored kitchen floor tiles and wants to choose a pattern using them to make a border around white tiles. He generates patterns by starting with a row of four white tiles. He surrounds these four tiles with a border of colored tiles (Border 1). The design continues as shown below:

Fred writes the expression $4(b-1)+10\,$ for the number of tiles in each border, where $b$ is the border number, $b \ge 1$.

  1. Explain why Fred's expression is correct.
  2. Emma wants to start with five tiles in a row. She reasons, “Fred started with four tiles and his expression was $4(b-1)+10$. So if I start with five tiles, the expression will be $5(b-1)+10$. Is Emma’s statement correct? Explain your reasoning.
  3. If Emma starts with a row of $n$ tiles, what should the expression be?

#Ideas for Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Wall Color Schemes

White cabinets create a clean, fresh kitchen design.

When you update your kitchen cabinets with a new paint color, it's important to ensure that your new cabinet color coordinates with your wall color. Your wall color might have looked appealing with your original cabinets, but newly renovated cabinets often require new, complementary wall colors. Depending on your kitchen themes, opt for warm color combinations to create a natural, cozy space; cool colors for a serene vibe; or contrasting colors to energize the room.

White Cabinets and Earth Tone Walls

White cabinets look appealing with almost any wall color, but earth tone walls support rustic, country, Spanish, modern, cottage, industrial and Mediterranean themes. Opt for taupe, soft gray, tan, yellow-gold or mocha brown walls to create a kitchen design that allows your newly painted white cabinetry to stand out in the room. Select brush ... Read more »

#Inexpensive Way to Change the Appearance of Kitchen Cabinets

Removing some cabinet doors gives the cabinets a new look.

Awash in Color

Paint offers one of the most dramatic changes for cabinets; a new color completely transforms the look of both the cabinets and the room as a whole, since these often cover a large area of wall space. If the cabinets are already painted, give them a shabby-chic makeover by rubbing them down with candle wax, painting a new color over the wax, then sanding away some of the paint to reveal hints of the original shade. For a color wash, mix latex paint with clear latex glaze, then brush on the mixture, rubbing most of the glaze off with a rag. Give them a raw silk finish instead by rubbing steel wool through the wet glaze, working in parallel columns. For the ultimate bargain, search the "mis-tint" shelf at the paint store for paint shades that did not come out exactly as another customer requested. These are sold highly disc ... Read more »

#Ikea Stenstorp Kitchen Trolley - My Fussy Eater

A review of the Ikea Stenstorp Kitchen Trolley

2C1020" /% Ok so this is a slightly different post than usual it s not a recipe or a food review but something I purchased for my kitchen recently which I absolutely love and thought it might be useful to share if anyone is looking for something similar for their own home.

Recently I ve been getting more and more frustrated about worktop space in my kitchen. My kitchen is a decent size but I never seem to have enough worktop space, especially if I m making several recipes at once, or cooking a particular ingredient-heavy meal. So I looked into ways of adding additional space that wouldn t take up too much room. My budget was tight but I found some really great solutions in Ikea. They have a few different types of kitchen trolleys but the Stenstorp model was my favourite.

Costing £140 (or $199 in the US) the Stenstorp trolley  really is a ... Read more »

I bought just one of these rolls as a test before I do my kitchen. I installed it in my master bathroom and made many mistakes while doing so, I shouldn't have picked a counter top with two sinks as my first project. But after lots of adjusting and trimming I got it installed and it looks pretty good and it's holding up well to my daily use so far.

A PAIN to get on but absolutely great once it is done. I waited a year after installing to write a review. It is still on the counters and gorgeous. We have a couple of scratches here and there but not noticeable until you run your hand over them. The chestnut goes wonderfully with black or stainless steel appliances. It ... Read more »

    #Installing A Kitchen Island Bar

A kitchen island bar can provide the convenience of extra counter and storage space. A kitchen island will also upgrade the appearance of your kitchen. You can buy a ready-made island and just add an overhanging counter. Here is the less expensive method of building your own kitchen island bar.

Step 1 - Choose Kitchen Cabinets

At your local home improvement store, check out the section on kitchen cabinets. Browse the individual cabinets, deciding on the one you like. Purchase two of these individual kitchen cabinets. They range in sizes but are usually between 30 and 36 inches wide.

Once you have the cabinets back home, remove the drawers and place the cabinets back to back. Open the doors of the cabinets so you can attach them together through the inside. Drill one hole in each corner of the back wall and two holes under each of the holes in the top corners.

Insert bolts through each of the holes and fasten ... Read more »

    #Installing IKEA Upper Kitchen Cabinets

A while back we had an unexpected forced kitchen remodel, a row of upper cabinets full fell off the wall one day nearly taking my wife out with it. Like most projects around the house replacing these cabinets sat on the back burner until IKEA started sending us fliers in the mail and we noticed how nice their cabinets looked and how affordable they can be. We went with the Akurum wall cabinets with the aluminum framed frosted glass doors and glass shelves, if they things fall it could be really bad so I have to make sure to get it right unlike the previous owners of our house.

A little background, our house is concrete block and the wall these cabinets are to be installed on is the inside of an exterior concrete wall covered with furring strips, two layers of sheet rock, and about 3/16 thick textured finish. It was obvious that hanging the cabinets with wood screw to the furring strips was not a great idea so my pl ... Read more »

#Ladders & Step Stools: Find Loft Ladder and Step Stool Designs Online

What type of ladder or step stool do I need?

Choosing the right style depends on what sort of tasks you plan to undertake. In terms of practical use, there are two main designs:

    • Extension ladder: If you’re looking for a way to get up on your roof, this should do the trick. These typically range in height from 16 to 40 feet and are designed to have you stand no higher than the fourth rung from the top. Instead of being self-supporting like an A-frame ladder, they’re designed to lean up against your house or another sturdy surface.

    • A-frame ladder: These range in size from a shorter step stool style all the way to taller styles that can be used to hang artwork or reach those top-level shelves.

Should my ladder be made of a certain material?

Stability and safety are huge factors when it comes to choosing the right material. Keep in mind what you plan to u ... Read more »
