#Stylish Coastal Kitchen Lighting Ideas - Lights Online Blog

Lighting is a terrific way to bring or add a coastal feel to a kitchen. Elements such as textured woven shades, seashells, the use of rope and weathered finishes all come with such a breezy seaside appeal that you can almost smell the salty air. This roundup draws inspiration from this Houzz ideabook . which suggests trying textured pendant lights for coastal kitchen lighting. We have some more great ideas, too!

Landmark Capiza 3-light pendant

The Capiza s drum shade is decorated with discs of dyed, rounded capiz shells that create a unique look.

Sunset magazine will make Cornerstone Sonoma the home of its main gardens and outdoor test kitchen, a move that is expected to revitalize the Sonoma Valley attraction by drawing a new wave of international attention — and visitors — to the region.

The popular Time Inc. publication, known mostly for its lifestyle magazine and online website focusing on the West, announced Tuesday it is leaving its longtime campus in Menlo Park. It will move its editorial headquarters to Jack London Square in Oakland and relocate its gardens, where editors and staff test their ideas, to Sonoma.

Under the joint venture, Cornerstone will use the iconic Sunset brand to lure more visitors and retailers to its property near the junction of Highways 121 and 116, while Sunset will receive a scenic location for editorial photo shoots, advertiser gatherings and its growing events business.

I found Sydney Budget Kitchens on Ebay and I was very hesitant to use someone who was on Ebay but also someone I had never used before nor had any recommendation for. So I called Mick and went out to his showroom to meet with him. I was amazed by the person I met, It is very rare in Sydney to find someone who will put aside what they are doing and give you all their attention for almost 2 hours!

This is the best way to describe the service I got from Mick. Fastastic customer service, pleasant, gave me a lot of his time to explain the different products, has very good quality kitchens as well as bathroom accessories, tap ware, etc. He is humble, very respectful and knows how to ran his business, to him customers are important and it’s not about quantity b ... #Surfas Commercial Kitchen Supply

One of the pleasures of going to a new city is finding the shops you don't have in your own city. As our world gets smaller and smaller, this is an experience that is harder to come by. Surfas is one of those special places.

Surfas is commercial restaurant supply meets chef's boutique. When I'm in LA, Culver City isn't exactly my favorite place to visit, but it's worth it just to go to Surfas and browse the aisles, or stock up on baking supplies. While keeping prices reasonably low, the store manages to escape that grungy restaurant supply vibe (which I happen to love at times), while offering not only a full range of commercial items (a 60 quart mixer knocked my socks off), but also gourmet food items like Callebaut chocolate, specialty oils, and microbrews.

Surfas is now in three locations across the country: Los Angeles and Costa Mesa, California, and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

#The 6 Best Home Flooring Ideas and Options

Recently, my husband and I were faced with the task of replacing the flooring throughout our home. We had carpet that was 15 years old; it was stained and warn out. After doing a lot of looking around, we opted for laminate wood floors for the kitchen, dining room, living room, foyer, and hallway. Well, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. While the laminate was a great price and looked stylish throughout our home, it is not very practical in all of our rooms. I wish we had really thought more about what was the best type of flooring for each room as opposed to what looked the best.

Are you thinking about replacing flooring in your home? Consider the costs, benefits, and the downsides of each type of flooring before you commit. Here is a list of the most popular types of flooring, their pros and cons, and the rooms for which they are best suited.

#The 10 largest European Kitchen Companies

Many of you have asked me for a top 10 list of European kitchen companies. Being that in my mind Top 10 is not just about company size and/or sales volume (especially in today s economy ) I m still working on that list for you and sooner or later it will be posted.

In the mean time, with the help of a good friend (thank you, A.S.), I was able to come up with the list of the largest companies in the European kitchen brands for you.

The difficult part about coming up with such a list is how do you measure size, or I should say by what parameters. I see, some European companies are actually part of a Group they own several kitchen brands/factories, not necessarily all in the same country (!). Some manufacture kitchens but also sell retail, through a chain of factory owned stored. They may produce less kitchens, then another company, but if you add their retail sales, to their wholesale figures and then add appliances (manufact ... Read more »

#The Best Kitchen Design Software of 2015

Your kitchen is the heart of your home, and a well-designed kitchen provides a comfortable and functional space for your family to cook and gather. By using a kitchen planner, you can create your own design from scratch, or use a predesigned template created by professionals. You can estimate the cost of materials and decide if you want to do all of the work yourself or hire contractors to help you.

Kitchen Design Software: What to Look For

The best kitchen design software offers tools that include 3D design features, construction planning and a large object library. It is important to use software that lets you measure the exact dimensions of cabinets and appliances. Additionally, it should offer cost estimation features that keep track of your expenses. The most impressive programs offer large object libraries that give you thousands of options for flooring, cabinets and appliances. We used the following criteria to rank ... Read more »

#The Best Step Stool

If you can t find the Gorilla because it goes out of stock, our runner-up pick is the Hailo 4343-001 Safety Plus . Its steps are wide and secure, and the tool tray mounted to the top of the safety bar has magnets on either side that will hold metal tools. But it s a little on the expensive side and it s pretty heavy.

We didn t test 3-step stools (keep reading for why we didn t) but if you do need more height, we recommend the Gorilla Easy Step in the 3-step version. which offers a 36” boost.

Our main pick is rated to handle up to 225 lbs. but if you need more weight capacity, go with the Rubbermaid EZ Fold. which is rated for up to 300 lbs. It wasn t a top pick among our testers, but it can get the job done.

Why do you need a step stool?

Once I started researching and talking to people, I realized that people use step stools for a ton of different things

This seemingly obvious question (to reach things that are too hig ... Read more »

#Kitchen Window Coverings and Treatments

Covering your kitchen windows can give your space a facelift. But choosing the right kitchen window coverings may be a little difficult, especially if you re not sure what you re looking for exactly. The kitchen is a unique space and you may need different window coverings depending on where in the kitchen your windows are located and how they re used.

Over the Sink

If your kitchen window is over the sink, you need to take extra care in picking the right window covering. Real wood blinds are out. You don t want water splashing on them and causing warping and damage in general. Instead, opt for faux wood blinds or solar shades. Faux wood blinds are moisture-resistant and can be wiped down without causing damage. Solar shades are another great option because these can also be wiped down and water won t damage them. Select solar shades are antimicrobial, resisting the growth of mold and germs, so you can be sure you have a cle ... Read more »

#The City Sage: The Big Reveal: My Kitchen Makeover After Photos!

May 11, 2015

The Big Reveal: My Kitchen Makeover After Photos!

I am so excited about this post! Last Monday I shared some before photos of my kitchen makeover as part of Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week. Now I m practically leaping out of my chair as I type because I am so proud of this work. With two weeks and less than $2000 I transformed my kitchen from a claustrophobic eyesore to a space that radiates light and positive energy!

Because I rent rather than own, I did need to clear this makeover with my landlord. We agreed that the removal of some cabinets would make the new paint job go even farther towards opening the space, so I kicked things off with some very satisfying demolition. The next step was to choose colors from Sherwin-Williams vast range. I ve always loved the serene sophistication of a gray kitchen, as well as that hue s ability to feel both mode ... Read more »

#The Best Kitchen Makeovers - Consumer Reports

A city apartment with little space and lots of style

This New York City apartment serves as a second home for an opera-loving couple who like to entertain friends when they’re in town before catching a performance. It used to have a separate kitchen with outdated finishes and appliances.

A trendy update for a traditional home

The kitchen in this 1920’s Dutch Colonial in Westfield, NJ, had lost much of its original detail, not to mention its sense of order and circulation. Creating an arched opening between the kitchen and dining room increased the sight line while maintaining a sense of separation between the spaces, explains Adam Kois of WengerKois Architecture + Design.

A multifunctional kitchen for multiple generations

This Brookfield, Wis. residence is home to empty-nesters whose grown children and a parent often visit for extended stays. The couple hired Kevin Anundson of Owner Assiste ... Read more »

#The Best Food Scales of 2015

An accurate, reliable food scale for your kitchen is one of the most important tools for foodies, dieters and home cooks. Eyeballing measurements or employing the dip and sweep method with measuring cups can lead to imprecise amounts of ingredients going into your meals. This may not be a problem if you re not concerned with portion size, calorie count and other nutritional content. However, for those who take cooking or dieting seriously, a food scale is an absolute must.

Kitchen scales, while simple in purpose, actually come in a number of different forms with measuring components that are either mechanical or digital. Mechanical scales rely on an intricate set of internal springs and gears that indicate weight through a needle over a display reading. Digital scales offer precise readings and are often viewed as more accurate and long lasting than mechanical scales, which makes their presence more widespread among modern kitchens.

#The Best Kind of Paint for Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Improvement Resources

Phew! Painting with oil-based paints is hard to clean up and can make you dizzy with its noxious fumes. But oil paints also dry harder than latex, providing a more durable finish for trim, molding, and kitchen cabinets. All of these are reasons I was excited about using a new, waterborne alkyd when we painted our kitchen cabinets.

We used Benjamin Moore's Advance. but there are similar products on the market from Sherwin Williams and Behr. What is special about these paints is that they go on like an oil paint (smooth flow and leveling), have the low VOCs of many latexes, and clean up like latex (with just soap and water instead of paint thinner or mineral spirits).

I just finished painting a set of bookcases with Advance, which is what reminded me to tell you about my experience with it in my kitchen last year. I painted over existing primed melamine upper cabinet d ... Read more »

#The Island In Your Kitchen - General Topics

It s all about layout, traffic flow, and how much space you have. As well as how you control the flow.

That said our kitchen has doors that lock. Guests are not really welcome in the kitchen when we entertain.

This past Saturday night my girls made a surprise 60th birthday party for me. When wife and I came home from an early supper out, we entered the front door and found the living room empty of people with just mood lighting on. As we walked down the gallery towards our bedroom wing to change we found all our guests gathered in the sunroom (14x30) where drinks and hors d oeuvres were set. We visited with guests in the sunroom until 9PM when a light supper was served in the dining room. Our dining room has built ins with wine cooler, ice maker, dishwasher drawers for teh crystal and silver, so there is no need for a guest to come t the kitchen. At 10 pm the party moved to the living room (seats 20 and has a grand piano) ... Read more »
