#Fante s Kitchen Wares Shop: Online

From Aebleskivers to Zabaglione and Zesters, Fante's Kitchen Wares Shop online has it all. It's a treasure trove of basic to unusual kitchen tools, as well as information on their history and use.

Fante's was established in 1906 in the Italian Market area of Philadelphia. They have a long history of sourcing a huge range of cooking and pastry supplies and tools - often things that were otherwise difficult to find in the United States. They sold their kitchen wares in their shop, then through a popular mail order catalog, and now online.

Being a small shop gives Fante's advantages and disadvantages over larger competitors like Amazon. They can stock a large array of goods without worrying about having a huge demand for any one product, and they can talk at length on product pages about the product's use and history with charming anecdotal stories and even recipes.

Their website can at times feel a little dis ... Read more »

#Fitted Kitchen Base Unit Carcasses

3D Kitchen Catalogue | Kitchen Carcases | Kitchen Base Units

We build our kitchen cabinets to the highest possible specification.

We only use 18mm Egger MFC board, with 18mm solid backs and 2mm ABS/PVC edging for added protection and strength. All our kitchen cabinets are hand built to order using traditional glue and dowel techniques. As a result, a much sturdier unit is achieved as there is no movement in the joints by screws working loose and there are no visible fixings on the outside of the cabinet.

Blum soft close hinges and Blum Tandembox soft close drawer systems come as standard with all our ready made kitchen cabinets and are included in the price.

With over 100 Carcase Colours to choose from, we can offer you the best possible match for your preferred door style. We can also manufacture your cabinet furniture any size to suit your office, study or bedr ... Read more »

#Expedit Rolling Kitchen Island - IKEA Hackers - IKEA Hackers

Materials: EXPEDIT shelving unit, LAGAN countertop, BRANAS baskets

Description: Working with a small footprint kitchen I wanted to build an island that would provide seating, storage and extra counterspace. I saw similiar hacks on this site and was inspired to combine them into one super hack!

First I assembled the Expedit bookshelf leaving off the top panel and attaching castors to the bottom panel. Note: it s important to use good quality rubber castors given how much pushing, pulling and shoving this island endures.

Second I cut the Lagan countertop to the desired dimensions (just overhanging the front and back of the shelf and giving a more generous 2.5 overhang on either side.) Because the Expedit panels are hollow fiberboard I opted to secure the countertop with multiple small brackets. The easiest way to do this is to lay the countertop over the shelf and draw the lines of the ... Read more »

#Extension Ideas for home in Portmarnock from a 2 hr House Consultation

Case Study 2 of 2: Extension Ideas for House in Portmarnock

The raw material: semi-detached house built in 1974 facing north to the rear. The family: 2 adults and 1 child aged 1. The brief: how to create a rear extension of maximum 36 square metres to accommodate a Kitchen/Dining/Family Room and to include a Utility and Guest WC. And how to resolve the relationship between the Living and Dining Rooms?

The Raw Material: My thoughts on the Existing Plan.

  1. The rear of the house gets no direct sun and is too fragmented for family living.
  2. The Dining and Living Rooms have an unusual relationship: the dining feels like a passage between the Living Room an Kitchen.
  3. The location of the fireplace in the Living Room, and the big opening between the Living Room and the Dining Room, makes the Living Room difficult to furnish and to relax in. ... Read more »

#Family of 5 displaced after a kitchen fire in Kent

By KOMO Staff Published: Jul 26, 2015 at 7:52 PM PDT Last Updated: Jul 26, 2015 at 7:57 PM PDT

KENT, Wash. -- A family of five is having to find a new place to sleep after a kitchen fire caused significant damage to their Kent Valley apartment.

It happened around 5:30 Sunday evening in the 1000 block of Central Avenue North. The family came home to find the apartment filled with thick smoke and immediately called 911.

Neighbors reported hearing the smoke detector sounding, but couldn't tell which apartment it was coming from, fire crews said.

The Kent Fire Department arrived at the apartment and found heavy smoke, but no active flames. Fire crews said they searched for any hidden fires in the walls or ceilings, but none were found. Crews then ventilated the apartment to get rid of the smoke.

The Kent Fire Investigator said all the windows and doors of the apartment were closed and the fire i ... Read more »

#Faith s Kitchen Renovation: 5 Things We Learned While Buying an IKEA Kitchen

Renovation Diary: Faith's Budget Luxe Kitchen

September 2014 Update: SEKTION

IKEA has officially announced that they are replacing the AKURUM line of cabinets seen here with a new and improved system of cabinets — SEKTION. Read more about this change here:

Why an IKEA Kitchen?

The decision to get an IKEA kitchen came down to two factors: Price and modern design.

  1. Price - IKEA is like no other company when it comes to scale of economy in their home furnishings. I don't love every single thing that IKEA does, but when it comes to kitchen cabinets, I really didn't see any other way to get the size and style of kitchen we wanted.
  2. Modular and Modern - IKEA cabinets are completely modular — you can buy them in many configurations and adapt them to your style to a rather astonishing degree, especially if you, like us, w ... Read more »

#Fisher-Price Dora the Explorer Fiesta Favorites Kitchen

Fisher-Price Dora the Explorer Fiesta Favorites Kitchen

I m not sure what it is with toy kitchen sets, but kids love playing with them.  I m guessing it has something to do with the fact that kids like to emulate what their parents do.  When I saw the Fisher-Price Dora Kitchen, I knew immediately that my kids would enjoy it.

ACCESSORIES

The kitchen set comes with a pretty impressive amount of accessories.  Most of the items are plastic, but a couple of the pieces, like the tortilla, have a rubbery texture.  I found out that you can also buy a couple of extra sets of food that come with new recipe cards, that unlock more phrases.  Yes, this is a ploy to make more money, but for about $11 each, it s not a bad deal.

MISCELLANEOUS

The device that speaks phrases runs on three AA batteries that are included.  It has two volume settings and an off s ... Read more »

#Use layers of light to make your kitchen shine

Use layers of light to make your kitchen shine

The primary function of a kitchen may still be cooking, but it increasingly serves as one of the main entertaining spaces in the home. The right lighting can introduce several levels of brightness, make a room feel larger, and dramatically alter its mood and feel. It's important to invest in a scheme that provides good task lighting, as well as creating the ideal ambience.

Kitchen lighting can sometimes be the last consideration when it comes to desiging your space, but for a kitchen to look and function well, the space must be lit properly. Experts agree that the best time to decide on a new lighting scheme is at the planning stage, as you're signing off your kitchen drawings. Leave it until later, and it could become an afterthought, with limited possibilities.

A good kitchen lighting system needs at least two elements: bright, shadow-free task lightin ... Read more »

#Fine living: Pros and cons of custom vs. prefab cabinets

Posted: 11/08/08, 12:01 AM PST | Updated: on 03/19/2015

Custom or prefabricated kitchen cabinets? That's the question that's stumping a Mill Valley home-owner who's planning and budgeting for an upcoming kitchen remodel. His architect is steering him toward custom cabinets on the premise that prefab cabinets compromise the quality and craftsmanship and, possibly, the overall value of the house itself.

The kitchen in his turn-of-the-century Mill Valley home has a fairly standard configuration for the cabinets, and the bid for the cabinets, with glass doors on the upper cabinets, comes in at about $32,000 including the finishing.

In a recent Fine Living column, he read about Robert Nebolon, the San Rafael architect who customized IKEA cabinets in the remodel of his Eichler home. Although the Mill Valley homeowner wasn't interested in IKEA cabinets, he would consider some from Home Depot or Expo Design, ... Read more »

#Fixing a Kitchen Base Unit

Summary: How to fit a kitchen base unit. Find out how to fix or fit a base unit from planning out your installation through to actually getting your units fitted. This project show you how to fit and fix base units to all types of wall including plasterboard.

Fixing kitchen base units is done using the same principle whether it is a 150mm wide drawer unit or a 1000mm wide sink unit. The basics of getting the unit in place and fixed to the wall are the same.

Firstly you must determine the height of your work top. Most work tops are set at 900mm above the floor to allow for kitchen appliances to be slid underneath. Mark the underside of the work top on the wall as this is the height of your base unit. Most base, sink and drawer units these days come with adjustable legs. If yours does not have these it is very important you get your floor level. This can be done with self levelling floor screed.

Put the unit in posi ... Read more »

#Fitting a Monoblock or Mixer tap

Summary: How to fit a monoblock tap to a kitchen sink, basin or bath. Learn how to connect, fit or replace a mixer tap in your kitchen or bathroom. And get some hints ideas which tools will make this project a little easier.

It has to be said that fitting a monoblock mixer tap is not the easiest operation in the world and can certainly be a bit fiddly. However, this project should go some way to making it a little easier.

If you do not have any isolation valves handy to cut off the water supply while you carry out your work then you will have to ensure that the water is turned off. Additionally, while the water is off it's a good idea to fit isolation vales for any work you may need to carry out in the future.

#Five Ways to Update Old Kitchen Counters

Old counters can make a kitchen feel out-of-date, but replacing them with new, expensive materials isn't always an option. Here are a few less expensive ways to update old counters.

Give It a New Look with Paint

Assuming you're starting with standard laminate counters, there are a couple of different ways you can use paint for a new look. On the less-expensive end of the spectrum, there are products like Rust-Oleum's countertop paint. that are tintable to almost any color.

In the image above, chalkboard paint and paste wax were used to make soapstone-like counters. You can see more on that transformation here.

Rust-Oleum also makes a Transformations product which is a three-step process that mimics the look of natural stone.

It's a three-step process which takes more time, and it's a little more pricey—upwards of $200 per kit—bu ... Read more »

#Fitting a New Kitchen 4 - Where to Start

Last Update: Apr 23, 2015

Your new kitchen units have been delivered and the kitchen area is ready for the install, but where do you start ?

The first job to do is check the level of the floor, wherever the highest point is measure up 870mm and mark the wall, this measurement allows 720mm for the base unit and 150mm for the plinth.

From your mark draw a level line using your spirit level across the wall(s), this is the guideline for all your base units. Now measure up from the 870mm mark to the bottom of your wall units (this measurement is down to personal preference).

I would suggest 400 440mm. From this mark draw a level line across the wall(s).

Finally, measure up from the mark to the top of the wall units i.e. 720mm, and once more draw a level line across the wall(s).

(See the image above.)

Now double check your lines are all level.

Assemble the Units
