#Kitchen Chronicles: DIY floating rustic shelves

These last few days have flown by! With our housewarming party approaching in May, I ve been tackling a handful of other projects. The kitchen is still our priority though, and our newest addition is one of my favorites

Here s how it all began.

This open wall between the two windows needed something, and I thought would make the perfect space for a couple smaller shelves:

But after we decided on a white backsplash, it was just too much white. I needed a more natural element, and wood was the answer.

I spotted a couple tutorials on Pinterest that got my attention, like Ana White s floating shelves at YHL :

And these from Shanty 2 Chic:

Ultimately, I decided Shanty s version was simpler (+ required less wood) so I used that as my inspiration. They were a bit too thick for what I wanted, so I substituted the top side pieces of wood for 1/4 plywood instead of 1 boards.

When home cooks get serious they start to cast covetous eyes on their neighbors' professional ranges. The restaurant range they usually buy, when they do decide to splurge, is a Garland. When I set up my own kitchen several years ago, I chose a Wolf instead.

The decision was relatively easy. I'd worked with both stoves in restaurants over the years. I felt that if I were going to spend a lot of money on a range for my home I wanted it to be the sturdiest I could find; I wanted it to suffer abuse gladly.

In my experience and that of others I've talked to, both the Wolf and the Garland proved to be good pieces of equipment - but the Garland appears to be more balky and less heavy. The relative heaviness of the Wolf gives me the sense of sturdiness, and so far that sense has not been betrayed.

If you own an electric range and the oven will not heat, make sure you have not blown a fuse. Consult the appliance manual for the exact location of each oven component. In most oven models, the fuse can be found by opening the back of the oven or lifting the top of the stove where the burners are located. If the fuse checks out, the oven may have a faulty heating element. The heating element is a U-shaped metal piece found at the bottom of the oven. The element is held in place by two screws at the back of the oven. Remove the screws and any brackets and pull the piece forward. Next, undo any wires attached to the element. To test the heating element, connect two probes from a multimeter. A multimeter measures the amount of voltage in a component. The heating element should have about 10 to 40 ohms.
