There is an old saying that necessity breeds creativity - no other company knows this better than KitchenAid, which got its start during a tumultuous time in world history.

In 1908, KitchenAid then-President, Herbert Johnson, created the world first dough mixer to make bread for the military during World War I. After the war, the product was scaled down for commercial use and became popular with bakers all over the world. Soon, the company developed into a world leader in the kitchen appliances domain, based on its philosophy of creating top quality home appliances to simplify the chores of everyday life.

The KitchenAid mixer was the first small appliance to use the revolutionary concept of planetary action . The mixer moves the bowl in a circular motion in one direction, while the beater rotates in the opposite direction.

One of KitchenAid top priorities was to create smaller units that could fit easily into the kitchens of American households. The smaller version of the original mixer got its name from an employee’s wife who, after using the device under its uninspired name H-5, reportedly exclaimed I don't care what you call it - it's the best kitchen aid I've ever had!

In the 1920s, Kitchen Aid released a series of ad campaigns to attract the modern woman. It highlighted the stand mixer’s ability to stir, beat, mix, slice and chop through food with ease, using electricity.

Since 1937, every mixer the company produces comes fully equipped for interchangeable attachments. They allow you to convert your mixer into a juicer, a blender to make smoothies, a pasta maker for fresh pasta and many others to make ice cream, vegetable purees and a host of other foods. Most mixers have head tilts for convenience and easy access to the contents of the bowl.

Other attachments include can openers, food grinders, food trays, fruit and vegetable strainers and grinders, gourmet attachment packs, grain mills, pasta excellence kits, pasta rollers and sets that make fettuccini, spaghetti, ravioli as well as roto slicer with shredder and sausage stuffer kits. Depending on your needs you may also choose the size of the bowl.

Kitchen Aid was acquired by Whirlpool in 1986 and the product line expanded from just mixers to dishwashers. refrigerators and everything in between. Kitchen Aid has now become a household name thanks to the quality products they produce and the service they provide.

Though the aesthetics of the Kitchen Aid mixer have been refined and ameliorated, such as in the 1950s when the company introduced a whole rainbow of bright colors, to this day the device has essentially remained unchanged. The mixer has even been honored by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. as an American Icon.
