#How To Install A Flat Pack Kitchen - Mitre 10

Kitchens have always been the heart of the Kiwi home but nothing makes time spent in the kitchen quite as enjoyable as having everything set up just the way you like it. Mitre 10 s Flat Pack Kitchens make that possible with a range of modern, stylish and surprisingly affordable kitchen options you can design and build yourself.

New Kitchens In Old Houses

Renovations are a huge part of Kiwi home ownership and installing a new, perfectly straight kitchen in an older house brings added challenges to this DIY project. The adjustable feet can help level up the most uneven floor and cabinets are designed to accommodate out-of-shape walls, but older houses can often involve a little fine tuning trimming toe kicks to match uneven floors and trimming the back edges of cabinetry and benchtops to fit out-of-square walls. Take the time to mark these changes carefully before you trim. An electric planer is a great way to achieve a ... Read more »

#How To Make a Kitchen Chalkboard

Renters, rejoice! There’s a fun way to give your kitchen a little chalkboard love without painting a wall, drilling holes, or spending a lot of money. A trip to the craft store will provide you with the tools for this fun, easy DIY chalkboard, perfect for scribbling grocery lists, menu plans, or notes to your housemates.

When my husband and I first moved into our apartment, we discovered something unfortunate about the walls. Fabricated in the late 1940s, they’re made out of a brittle, plaster-like material that defies drilling. After making a few unsightly craters in the walls, we realized traditional picture hooks weren’t an option.

As we were searching for other ways to decorate, we found that the folks at 3m had solved our problem for us. They have an impressive array of hooks and adhesive tabs that hold fast without leaving a mark.

Their picture hanging strips come in many different sizes — you’ll want to choos ... Read more »

41 Luxury U-Shaped Kitchen Designs Layouts (Photos)

Today we have gathered for your pleasure and inspiration a collection of U-shaped kitchen floor plans in a cornucopia of colors, textures, and styles.

These kitchens all share the basic shape – and many are U-shaped kitchen designs with islands anchoring their space – but beyond that, a world of possibility opens up. Once settled on a basic shape, every aspect of the room’s design is up for grabs.

Countertops range from glossy black monoliths, to textured marble journeying a full spectrum of colors, to huge natural wood slabs. Cabinetry comes in painted white, natural wood tones, and the occasional jet black minimalism.

Unifying themes come in the form of patterned color schemes or building materials, often framed and defined by lighting in myriad forms.

How Do I Choose the Best Kitchen Drawer Pulls? (with pictures)

8,12,15,9,7,17,13,16,10,14

To choose the best kitchen drawer pulls, or handles, the first thing to keep in mind is that this hardware can make a big difference in how your cabinetry will look. Consider the style, material and color of different pulls and picture their look in your kitchen. Also consider how comfortable they are to use, their maintenance and how they'll mount into your cabinets. Once you consider many options, you can then narrow down your choices of kitchen drawer pulls.

Don't go by looks alone, but also practicality. Cabinetry handles are going to be frustrating to use every day if your hands don't fit comfortably in them. Handles should be easy to grip when opening drawers and cabinets. Think about the maintenance, rather than how drawer pulls and knobs look in the store. Stainless steel can be a great choice for quality and durability, but may show every fingerprint each time you open ... Read more »

#WordPress - Support - Are Kitchen Sink Themes CPU Hogs?

[resolved] Are Kitchen Sink Themes CPU Hogs? (2 posts)

Posted 3 years ago #

Hello. I am wondering if I should upgrade to one of the premium WordPress themes such as Thesis Theme, which famously seem to have just about every imaginable functionality. And there are many similarly impressive themes found here under "Commercially Supported GPL Themes ."

But do these "kitchen sink" themes have a downside of high CPU usage?

I have several multisite installation. I am hoping to run dozens of sites per installation. And I want to specialize in one or two good themes that have head insert or custom CSS capabilities. Dozens of added admin buttons would be nice, but not if this causes high CPU usage.

I am not asking "What is a good theme." I am simply asking:

1. Do more complex themes INTRINSICALLY tend to have substantially high CPU usage?

Usually, I am just provi ... Read more »

Unroll the drawer liner, if it isn't already flat. Spread it out with the right-side up, in the sun if possible. If it naturally curls back up, weight it down with paperweights. Leave it spread out like this for several hours or until it relaxes.

#How to Get a To-Die-For Kitchen Without Killing Your Budget

    Courtesy of IKEA

Everybody wants a gorgeous kitchen, but spending $50,000 to remodel isn't an option for many people in the current economic climate. With home values not rising as they once did, investing in a high-end custom kitchen may not make economic sense. The good news is there are some ways to update your kitchen without busting your budget.

Kitchen upgrades generally return between 80 and 105 percent of their cost when a home is resold, experts say. So money spent on redoing the kitchen can be money well spent.

If you only have a $5,000 budget, you're looking at a kitchen facelift: repainting the walls, replacing hardware and faucets, installing new lighting, changing fabric on window treatments and chairs/stools, plus updating accessories. If you choose wisely, even small changes like these can have a big impact.

    Plan the Installation

    Watch video of this step.

When planning your installation, working with your local stone fabrication shop is key. Granite is heavy, difficult to transport and must be cut with specialty tools. And though it s known for its hardness, if it's not handled correctly or installed with proper support, it can crack or, worse, break.

#How to Keep Your Cats Off the Kitchen Counter

    Also:

It seems cat behavior problems come in bundles tied together with a theme. Last week s was counter surfing. Saturday s consultation was particularly memorable. It focused on Jan, Billie, and their three male Abyssinian cats. The couple was frustrated because their cats liked hanging out on the kitchen counters and using them as highways. They tried squirting the boys with water, laying out mats that shock, motion-sensitive hissing cans and yelling loudly. Despite their efforts, the cats continued to favor the counters.

#How to Install Under Cabinet Lighting in Your Kitchen

    COST

    Step 1: Project overview

The best time to install wiring for undercabinet lights is during a kitchen remodel, before the walls are covered with drywall. But if you want undercabinet lighting and aren't planning any major renovations, don't despair. The wiring plan we show in this article is designed to work in almost any kitchen, and can be installed without visible damage to the walls. And since we're using the inside of the base cabinets to run wires, you don't even need access to a basement or attic.

The National Electrical Code requires that plastic-sheathed cable (commonly called Romex) be protected in areas where it's subject to abuse. Since we're running the cable in the back of cabinets where pots and pans could bump it, we've chosen to be safe and run the cable inside a flexible steel conduit (called “flex”). We'll show you how to cut and install flex and then how to pu ... Read more »

#How to Install Wall and Base Kitchen Cabinets

    Measure and Mark the Wall

Measure the height of the base cabinets. Most standard cabinets are 34-1/2 high. Add 1-1/2 for a standard countertop and 18 inches for a standard backsplash, (though some designers now want a 20-inch backsplash to make room for small appliances). With an 18-inch backsplash, the total measurement should be 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the upper cabinets. If your floor is not level, be sure to measure from the highest point along the wall.

Draw a horizontal line across the wall at this 54-inch point which will serve as a guide for hanging the cabinets. Be sure to use a level to assure this line is true horizontal.

Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs. The wall studs are crucial to properly support the weight of the cabinets. Note: Pay careful attention to the position of all electrical wiring and plumbing.

#How to make your own curtains: 27 brilliant DIY ideas and tutorials

I m okay with the price of domestic plane tickets in general.

    I know you were wondering.

Not that I enjoy paying for them, but I generally feel that transporting me through the air, defying gravity, is a service that should cost something. If Delta tried to send me to California for $3.99, I might feel suspicious.

However, based on my limited (and in some cases, nonexistent) knowledge of the world, there are many things that do cost more than they should, in The Economy According to Me. Here s an incomplete list:

    1. Lamps (Should be $10 a piece. Up to $50 if it s fancy.)

    2. Rugs ($2 a yard!)

    3. Healthcare (Shazam, just dropped a current event on your face!)

    4. Faucets

    5. Underwear (How much did it REALLY cost you to make this tiny thing? Also, perhaps granny panties should be charged a different rate. But I don t make the rules.)

    #How To Install Kitchen Cabinets - Old-House Online - Old-House Online

A carpenter’s own kitchen install offers tricks for hanging cabinets that are plumb, level, and square—in rooms that aren’t.

It s important to ensure that the cabinets are level and plumb in all directions. To guarantee that this is the case, Mark checks (and double-checks) surfaces using a torpedo, a 2 level, and a 4 level.

In theory, setting kitchen cabinets should be easy: Strike a couple of level lines, fasten cabinets to the wall, and presto! You have a new kitchen. Setting cabinets is a tempting DIY project because the installation principles are basic, but the reality—especially in the old-house world of crooked floors and uneven wall surfaces—is more complicated. Installing new kitchen cabinets that look like they were built with your old house requires technique and planning. Whether you’re doing it yourself or managing a contractor, my tricks-of-the-trade suggestions, from stra ... Read more »

#How to Install New Kitchen Cabinets

DK - Do It Yourself Home Improvement, 2009 Dorling Kindersley Limited

    Introduction

    Step 1

    Planning and Preparation

Take time to prepare the wall surfaces and assemble the kitchen cabinets before installing them. Drawing the first guide line for positioning cabinets is essential to the success of the whole project. Cabinets and countertops are heavy items, and you will need someone to help you lift them into position.

    Laying Out Cabinets

    • The starting point for installing any kitchen is a level guide line for the top of the base cabinets. A height of about 34-1/2 above the floor is standard. The countertop is added later.
  • Start in one corner, using a level to guide you. Older floors can be uneven, so check the line’s height at intervals to make sure base cabinets and appliances will fit beneath it comfortably along the entire length.
  • Mark a second li ... Read more »

Pantry Cabinets: Find Freestanding Kitchen Pantry Designs Online

First of all, make them shallower than your other kitchen cabinet shelves. The ideal shelves are 6 to 9 inches deep; the shallow space keeps all your items visible and easy to reach. To avoid stacking jars, add shorter shelves for small jars or spices. Some pantries have such shallow shelving built into the doors, increasing the surface area of storage space.

Make an inventory of the items you stock most; it will help you keep track of what’s available (keep the pen and paper in the pantry, so you’ll always remember to update the list). Organize items in a fashion that makes sense to you, whether it’s alphabetically, by associated ingredients, brand name and even color (so when you’re looking for tomato sauce, you know to check the red section). Store heavy items on an easy-to-reach shelf to avoid straining your back, and lighter and non-child-safe items near the top. The most commonly used items should go rig ... Read more »

Virtual Kitchen Designing - Frou FruGal

Yesterday was a bear. I won t bore you with the details, mainly because I d have to relive them in order to bore you. Suffice it to say that I was NOT having fun.

Which meant that I didn t get to even think about my blog or home projects or anything of that nature until about 9 p.m. last night.

I thought I would come up with a quick post just so I could keep on my streak. Since I needed to relax, I started thinking about my kitchen and how I want it to look. I have thrown pictures out of what I am trying to accomplish, but no real mock up. Until last night.

In fact, I was having so much fun with my design that I never did finish it enough to write up a post. This morning was more of the same stuff that had me stressed out yesterday, but I finally found some time to share what I did.

Here is what my kitchen looks like now.

I have added a couple of stools since this picture was shot. Sorry for the bad pic ... Read more »

#How to Paint a Kitchen Chalkboard Wall

    Prep the Wall for Painting

Relocate any appliances. Remove the shoe mold and baseboard carefully from the wall that is being painted. Remove the nails and store it in a safe place for reinstallation later in the day.

Place a drop cloth on the floor next to the wall being painted. Grab the sanding pole and sand the wall from floor to ceiling and side wall to side wall (Image 1).

Need to paint around any windows? If so, use a steady hand or protect window trim with painter's tape (Image 2). Do the same with the wall edges and ceiling intersections. Use a putty knife or 5 in 1 painter's tool to force seal the tape to the surface (Image 3).

Vacuum and clean up any paint dust residue.

    Pro Tip

    #How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

    How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

I want to repaint my kitchen cabinets. Do I need to sand and prime them before painting? Also, what kind of paint should I use? ” -Courtney

    Hi Courtney,

Start by cleaning your cabinets thoroughly to remove any dirt and grease. Next, take off the hinges and knobs, and lightly sand the cabinets to remove the gloss for better adhesion (or use a liquid deglosser).

While priming never hurts, whether it’s necessary or not is determined by the type of paint (oil or latex) currently on your cabinets and the type you plan to use for repainting. If you’re changing the type of paint or painting over natural wood cabinets, then it s important to prime the cabinets first.

If you are repainting with the same type of paint that is on them now, then priming is optional. To determine the type of paint on your cabinets, and learn more about primers in general, read our article A ... Read more »

#How To Know if You re Ready for Open Kitchen Shelving

    Kitchen Backsplashes - Unique Ideas

As the focal point of many homes, even the most cost-conscious homeowner may decide to remodel or add a few stylish touches to their kitchen. One way to spruce it up is by installing a new backsplash.

Backsplashes serve not only utilitarian purposes, but can add a lot of extra style. Though they are great at catching inadvertently airborne foodstuffs so they won't stain the paint on your walls, they can also be a relatively inexpensive way to update a kitchen. These days, there are so many different types of materials and styles of backsplashes available that the 18 20 inch space between the countertop and wall cabinets can be transformed into nothing short of a work of art.

The most popular, budget-conscious material for a kitchen backsplash is 2-4 inch ceramic or porcelain tile, which can be purchased online or at any home improvement store if you stick with something relatively simple. Ceramic tile is extremely versatile and th ... Read more »

#How To Light A Kitchen For Older Eyes

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

As we age, the lens of the eye becomes less flexible, and our lighting requirements change. The ability to focus on near objects decreases, which explains why many people need reading glasses as they get older. The lens of the eye also becomes denser and yellower, decreasing the transmission of light, so that more light is often needed to see. This changes how we perceive colors; they become more muted and muddy. Just try looking through a yellow filter to see what I mean — you’ll benefit from lighter colors surrounding you. The eyes become more susceptible to glare as well, making the need for contrast greater.

There are many other issues that affect aging eye lenses too, so older eyes require different lighting solutions. These solutions won’t benefit just them; they will also help create more beautiful household surroundings. Considering the right amount of light, locatio ... Read more »

#How to Keep a Kosher Kitchen

Kashrut. Table of Contents | Overview of Laws | Vegetarianism

    Dishes and silverware

It is essential to have seperate sets of dishes for dairy products and meat. It is best to have two distinct colors, patterns or styles so that you will not be confused when you look at a plate or a fork as to whether it is for dairy or meat.

    Cabinets, Drawers Trays

To help avoid confusion, it is best to designate separate cabinets for the dairy equipment and meat equipment. If you have cabinets on two sides of the kitchen, you may want to put the meat on one side and the dairy one on the other to avoid confusion. When you first organize your kosher kitchen, it is wise to label the cabinets on the outside as Dairy [Chalav] and Meat [Basar]. #How to Light a Kitchen: Track vs Recessed Lighting (Reviews

Invariably, the decision will be track vs recessed lighting when lighting a kitchen. Track and Recessed lighting are two of the most common types of task lighting used for lighting up a space. In every application, task lighting is necessary if you want to achieve proper lighting. It's like the skeleton of the body, whereas the other elements of lighting design: decorative, accent and ambient provide the affects or personality of the room.

The two are so different, with track being pronounced and recessed being invisible, and as you can imagine, there are huge differences.

#How to Make a 3 Dollar Pizza Stone

Great pizza doesn't have to cost much.

    Article | February 12, 2010 - 12:23pm | By Nick Kindelsperger

If you re not down with pizza stones, it s time. Bread-bakers and home pizza afficionados praise them for their heat-retaining, moisture-wicking ability to imitate the floor of a brick oven. You put it in your oven and it not only provides a rustic surface to bake the bread on, but it also keeps the heat of the oven steady. Especially when it comes to pizza, that ever-important underside char and blistering (sometimes known as the upskirt ) will only ever come with a stone, which you can get absolutely blazing hot over a long oven preheat.

Awhile back, my pizza stone cracked in half, and I never got around to replacing it. But rather than spending $40 on a slab of stone from Williams-Sonoma on which to bake my pizza, though, you can instead go to Home Depot and cobble it together for a few bucks. Mine, in fact, came out exa ... Read more »

#How to Layout an Efficient Kitchen Floor Plan

    • Layout work surfaces: A work surface, or countertop area should ideally be located between each of the work triangle areas.  Therefore, between the refrigerator and sink, and between the sink and stove/oven, a countertop area is ideal. In smaller kitchens, a work area in each space may not be possible due to space.  The more working areas you can provide yourself, the better. Consider using multifunctional work areas if space is an issue. For example a raised countertop adjacent to a dining area, can serve as a seated bar for eating as well as a preparation work surface for cooking

    • Kitchen islands: In large kitchens a kitchen island can cut down on excessive travel to each part of the work triangle.  Consider placing one or more of the work triangle functions at the island.
