Drawer Organizers can help clean up those junk drawers!

Every one has a junk drawer, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Does this situation sound familiar?

How do you clean them up without spending a lot of time and money?

The good news.

Organizing your kitchen drawers is one of the easiest and least expensive kitchen fixes. A few minutes is all it will take and it will save you time (and your sanity) in the long run. No more rummaging in the drawer to find your ice cream scoop!

My Favorite Things

Get some drawer organizers. Whether it's a flatware organizer, or just some empty boxes your checks came in, these items can really help contain the clutter!

Here are my favorite items to contain those items in your kitchen drawers (and a few tips on what to do with them).

Plastic Bins:

My favorite way to deal with the infamous "junk drawer" is to use inexpensive plastic bins. Most $1 Stores carry them. They usually come in sets of 2 or 3 for only $1. Some places even carry several color choices.

I suggest purchasing both rectangles and squares. The mixing of the varying sizes helps fit the configuration of just about any drawer you need to organize.

Flatware Organizers

Whether made of wood, plastic, bamboo or chrome, these really do the job. You can separate your forks, knives, spoons and serving pieces and see what you need at a glance. You could use the junk drawer plastic bins, but a good flatware organizer really works best. That's what they were designed for!

Expandable Drawer Organizers

These can be made of plastic or wood (but plastic is more common). These come with long pieces that fit length-wise in the drawer. The short "cross" pieces link into slots and allows you flexibility to configure the drawer around what you'll be storing.

If you can't find expandable them in the kitchenware, check in the bed/bath section. They are often used for socks and undies.

In my experience, it's best to use expandable drawer organizers for larger kitchen tools (can openers, cork screws, long wooden spoons, etc.).

No More Junk Drawers

It won't do any good to purchase kitchen drawer organizers or expandable drawer organizers if you don't use them. This won't take long. here's the steps to eliminate the junk and have organized kitchen drawers.

Steps to Organize Your Kitchen Drawers

1. Empty the drawer of all its contents
2. Sort through the items and throw away any trash
3. Put any items you never use in a "donate" pile
4. Wipe down the drawer with a wet paper towel and dry it
5. Cut some shelf/drawer lining paper to size and line the drawer
6. Sort the items
7. Put small loose items in plastic bags (twist ties, etc.) -- label with a marker or label maker
8. Put like things together (tape with tape, glue with glue, tools with tools, etc.)
9. Place your organizers in the drawer (mix up the sizes until the drawer is filled)
10. Pick the correct bin for the items (long things go in long rectangle bins, etc.)
11. Place the items in the appropriate bin and. you're done!

Note: Get rid of that "donate" pile quickly. If you don't have a yard, garage or tag sale coming up, donate them.
