#Castleknock Extension And Renovation - Shomera House Extensions The project involved the complete renovation of a 1930’s semi-detached house set in a tranquil area near the Phoenix Park. The original house, including the garage, measured 1,000 square foot. With a two-storey extension to the side, a single storey extension to the rear, and new attic, the house is now over 2,000 square feet. In the existing house the rooms were small and the rooms to the rear suffered from poor natural light. The new design involved re-arranging the room layout to provide more usable space with an increase in the natural light to these rooms. The extension included a large new kitchen/dining room with courtyard, utility room, downstairs shower room, two new bedrooms and a home office in the converted attic. Internal RoofKitchen / DiningThe extension to the rear provides a large kitchen/dining and family living area. Despite the northerly orientation, the area is flooded with natural light by clever use of roof-lights, windows and the inclusion of a courtyard within the newly extended space. Some internal walls were in such poor condition they had to be replaced and all external walls were clad in insulated gypsum board and skim-coated. Hall / StairsThe renovation allowed for the insertion of new lighting in the house which included sensorcontrolled LED lighting near floor level in the hallway, stairs and landing areas. The hallway size was increased to be in proportion with the larger size of the house and the first floor landing has natural light by means of a tempered, laminated glass floor beneath a Velux in the new attic. Solid oak joinery and flooring gives the house a classic and warm appeal. TestimonialWe wanted to live in this area but we were concerned that the size and type of the houses would not meet our requirements. With the re-configuration of the existing house and the new extension we now have a house that is bright, beautiful and will meet our needs well into the future. It’s great to have the benefit of modern design in a traditional house. Shomera gave us the opportunity to create, not just an extension, but our own home just the way we wanted.
