#How to Organize Your Pantry - Kitchen Organizing

Cooking Up Storage

Cooking Up Storage

Need more space in your kitchen pantry? Follow blogger Susan Haskins's lead and create zones to give everything from snacks to baking items its own place.

Streamline Your Shelves

Streamline Your Shelves

Create a Kid Zone

In the Haskins house, the kids head straight to the kitchen after school. They used to ask Mom for a snack. Now they just grab cookies, granola bars, pretzels or Goldfish crackers from easy-to-reach jars. "I put all their snacks at midlevel for quick access," says Susan.

Spruce Up the Space

Susan's first step: She cleared out everything. Next, she cleaned and painted the shelves and pantry walls a vibrant color. "I wanted to make it look as attractive as possible, so I figured, why not start with a fresh coat of paint?" she says.

#How to Paint a Kitchen Chalkboard Wall

Prep the Wall for Painting

Relocate any appliances. Remove the shoe mold and baseboard carefully from the wall that is being painted. Remove the nails and store it in a safe place for reinstallation later in the day.

Place a drop cloth on the floor next to the wall being painted. Grab the sanding pole and sand the wall from floor to ceiling and side wall to side wall (Image 1).

Need to paint around any windows? If so, use a steady hand or protect window trim with painter's tape (Image 2). Do the same with the wall edges and ceiling intersections. Use a putty knife or 5 in 1 painter's tool to force seal the tape to the surface (Image 3).

Vacuum and clean up any paint dust residue.

Pro Tip

Painter's Tip. Use a small flat bar or wide putty knife to pry the shoe mold and baseboard from the wall. Be careful not to dent the drywall or baseboard during the removal process. It helps to place ... Read more »

Domino A Guide to Living with Style.

#How to Paint Your KitchenAid Mixer - Dwell Beautiful

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I did not register for a KitchenAid mixer on our wedding registry. Oh, what a fool I was! I feel like registering for a KitchenAid is a rite of passage when you get married, and for whatever reason I neglected to do that. A year or so into our marriage I realized my mistake. I wanted to make cookies from scratch, I wanted to make homemade frosting! I wanted to make and bake so many magical things! But alas, I didn t have a mixer to make the whole process smoother. *Tears* So the hunt began. I searched high and low to find this magical appliance by scouring Craigslist, but no luck. And I wasn t about to pay the $400+ price tag for a new one!

One day, the heavens opened up and a college friend of mine said she was selling hers for a mere $100! I jumped at the chance ... Read more »

#How to paint kitchen cabinets

This post may contain my affiliate link. For more information, please see my disclosure policy: Thanks. )

Goodness gracious this is going to be long, so let s go!

Set your time you re going to do it. There will never be a perfect time with nothing going on, you ve just got to block it off the calendar and GO! We chose to do it in the spring when my husband could give me 2 full days when he had some time off for spring break.

Number all doors and drawers with numbers and leave a number back where you got them from so there is no confusion and they will hang correctly when you re-attach them.

We spray painted our hinges with brushed nickel spray paint, so my boys put the screws in a piece of styrofoam to get them ready for spray paint.

If you have lots of build-up on your cabinets you may have to clean first with a degreaser. The Zinsser primer we used said specifically to avoid TSP cleaner, so we skipped that and ... Read more »

#How to Repaint Kitchen Cabinets

Quick home fixups: Refinish your kitchen cabinets with new hardware and paint

By Joanne Liebeler

I once bought a house whose kitchen was darker than a Chekhov play. The cabinets were dirty brown. The wallpaper was faded and spotted with grease. I knew I had to lighten up that space before I moved in a single dish. So I painted the cabinets―instant transformation!

Many of us have cabinets in good condition, but the finish is cringe-inducing. Fortunately, there’s an easy, albeit time-consuming, fix that doesn’t involve taking a sledgehammer to the room. You can paint the cabinets any color you like and top them off with new hardware.

Before you get too excited, you need to make sure your cabinets are paintable.

Solid wood, wood veneer, and metal cabinets take paint well, but laminate and melamine finishes do not.

If this is what you have, there is still a way to give them a face-lift, but it’s best don ... Read more »

#How to Replace a Leaky Sprayer on a Moen Kitchen Faucet

A leaking spray nozzle does not require you to replace the kitchen faucet.

Kitchen faucet sprayers offer added convenience to any kitchen sink. The sprayers attach to a water supply outlet on the faucet body underneath the sink. Because of excessive use as well as hard-water mineral deposits, the sprayer end can develop a leak or become clogged, causing significant pressure loss. Most faucet sprayers connect to the faucet in the same fashion, no matter its brand name. Unfortunately, some models require replacing the entire assembly, including the hose. When you purchase a new sprayer, it will include a new escutcheon, or sprayer base, that attaches to the sink.

#How to Reface Your Old Kitchen Cabinets

New project for a new year: Update your cabinets without replacing them entirely, as a DIY project or with help from a pro

    Save

    Project: Refacing kitchen cabinets.

First step: Determine if your cabinets can take the restoration process well enough to be revitalized for at least another 10 years of life. If the cabinet body, or carcass, is in bad structural shape, is water damaged or will not take to refinishing well enough, you might have to replace the cabinets in a full kitchen remodel.

Why reface: In the most basic process, you will be leaving the cabinet intact and in its same place. This avoids the expense and effort of taking out and replacing the entire cabinet. So the advantages are less expense, less material going to the landfill and a less-complicated construction process.

Consider color an ally in making decisions about how to update the look of your cabinets. The ver ... Read more »

    #How to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets

    Before

It looks hopeless, but with new doors and enameled cabinet boxes you can create a whole new kitchen without the huge expense of replacing everything.

You'll be amazed at how simple it is to update your kitchen without tearing out your old cabinets and completely remodeling. By repainting the cabinets and installing new doors, you can achieve a whole new look at a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. To achieve our dramatic new look, we took off the old doors and painted the cabinet frames with a black, satin-finish oil paint. Then we hung slightly larger cherry panel doors with concealed “Euro-style” hinges. This reduced the space between the doors and eliminated hinge clutter for a more contemporary look.

Our kitchen design combines classic and contemporary elements for a fresh, eclectic look that blends well with many home styles, but these techniques work great to create any style you like. For a more traditiona ... Read more »

#How to Remove Kitchen Grease on Ceiling Fan Blades

Ceiling fan blades in a kitchen suffer from greasy buildup.

    The Prep Work

Before cleaning the ceiling fan blades, it's helpful to get everything ready, including yourself, to avoid multiple trips up the stepladder. Place newspaper on the floor beneath the fan area if it has been a long time since the fan has been cleaned; globs of dust may fall off as you wipe the blades. Tape the ceiling fan switch down temporarily if children in the house may flip its wall switch on as you work. Gather extra supplies such as spare rags, paper towels and all the cleaners you'll need, setting them up on the stepladder's tray for instant access. Finally, wear eye protection or even a bandanna over your head to ensure that none of that greasy fan gunk ends up in your eyes or on your head.

    Grime Time

If there's grease on the fan blades, there's most likely a buildup of dust and dirt stuck to them as well, ... Read more »
