Add Comment I don't know about you, but my kitchen could use some more counter space. I daydream regularly about tearing out the cabinets and remodeling it from scratch, but lack of time and money prevails. This portable kitchen work island. excerpted from the book Home Storage Projects. is a nice compromise. It's a straightforward project that you can complete in most home garage workshops and it only requires a modest amount of plywood, hardware, and solid-wood lumber. The work station consists of two basic components: the carriage and the cabinets. The carriage is the solid-wood framework of rails, aprons, stretchers, and platform that carries the cabinets. The plywood cabinets are built separately and then screwed to each other and to the carriage platform. The top can be laminated in your shop or be made from commercial butcher-block stock. You can easily modify these plans to raise or lower the height, swap out open shelving for more drawer space, or match the wood to your kitchen decor. And the dimensions are easily customizable.
