Four basic layouts dictate the design of most kitchens: the galley, the corridor, the U-shape, and the L-shape. Every kitchen needs space for each of the functions that take place within it: storing food, tableware, cookware, and utensils; preparing food and cooking; cleaning up; and eating, if space allows for it.

Open on both ends, the corridor kitchen requires a minimum corridor width of 48" so that the cook can easily maneuver during meal preparation. Typically, appliances are near one another which is convenient, but due to the shape of the kitchen, all of the household traffic could pass though the space

The L-Shaped Kitchen

The L-shaped kitchen offers flexibility for both large and small homes. This shape utilizes only two kitchen walls, providing an open atmosphere. The L-shape minimizes traffic through the kitchen and, typically, features larger expanses of countertops, allowing ease of preparation at mealtime.
