New-Kitchen Gift Ideas | eHow

A new kitchen, whether it's a remodel or part of a friend's first apartment, requires a space for cutting food for meal preparation as well as a means of cutting the items. Purchase a cutting board that matches the room's decor for a kitchen remodel; for example, if it has butcher-block countertops, a butcher-block-style cutting board made of numerous small pieces of wood in the same wood tones is a perfect pairing. An artisan-crafted cutting board made from a log adds an element of the outdoors. For a first kitchen, a cutting board paired with cleaning instructions is a welcome gift. A quality kitchen knife set with holder serves as functional countertop decor for any kitchen.

#How to Design a Cupcake-Themed Kitchen

Use cupcake cups and colors as inspiration for fabrics and kitchen decor.

Frosted Focal Point

Turn the largest area of open wall space into a focal wall for your cupcake kitchen by painting a large cupcake silhouette on it in a single color, such as white or pink on a red wall, or yellow, beige or light blue on a white wall. Copy a clip-art cupcake image by drawing it on the wall in chalk before painting, or project the image on the wall with an opaque projector to trace it. For a more whimsical look, paint a kawaii-style cupcake, complete with smiling face, on the wall, or feature several different kawaii cupcakes in a parade across the wall. In an apartment or rental home, use contact paper cut into a large cupcake shape to create a temporary, large silhouette for your focal wall. These included:

  •  The overall quality of MBW cabinets and the company’s experience with furniture construction

    Kitchen Witch Cleaning

Now we don’t all have to be complete domestic Goddesses, but a kitchen that is tidy and smells clean helps with energy I think.

When you are cleaning how about singing a song or playing some music?  Singing a Goddess or pagan song as you clean can really help raise the positive energy in your kitchen.  Doesn’t even have to be a pagan song, it can be one of your favourite disco ones if that’s what makes you happy and fills you with the energy to clean!

I always like to put on an apron when I am in the kitchen, it is somehow a mental switch that puts me into kitchen witch mode.

Pantry Cabinets: Find Freestanding Kitchen Pantry Designs Online

First of all, make them shallower than your other kitchen cabinet shelves. The ideal shelves are 6 to 9 inches deep; the shallow space keeps all your items visible and easy to reach. To avoid stacking jars, add shorter shelves for small jars or spices. Some pantries have such shallow shelving built into the doors, increasing the surface area of storage space.

Make an inventory of the items you stock most; it will help you keep track of what’s available (keep the pen and paper in the pantry, so you’ll always remember to update the list). Organize items in a fashion that makes sense to you, whether it’s alphabetically, by associated ingredients, brand name and even color (so when you’re looking for tomato sauce, you know to check the red section). Store heavy items on an easy-to-reach shelf to avoid straining your back, and lighter and non-child-safe items near the top. The most commonly used items should go rig ... Read more »

#How To Light A Kitchen For Older Eyes

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

As we age, the lens of the eye becomes less flexible, and our lighting requirements change. The ability to focus on near objects decreases, which explains why many people need reading glasses as they get older. The lens of the eye also becomes denser and yellower, decreasing the transmission of light, so that more light is often needed to see. This changes how we perceive colors; they become more muted and muddy. Just try looking through a yellow filter to see what I mean — you’ll benefit from lighter colors surrounding you. The eyes become more susceptible to glare as well, making the need for contrast greater.

There are many other issues that affect aging eye lenses too, so older eyes require different lighting solutions. These solutions won’t benefit just them; they will also help create more beautiful household surroundings. Considering the right amount of light, locatio ... Read more »

#How to Install Wall and Base Kitchen Cabinets

    Measure and Mark the Wall

Measure the height of the base cabinets. Most standard cabinets are 34-1/2 high. Add 1-1/2 for a standard countertop and 18 inches for a standard backsplash, (though some designers now want a 20-inch backsplash to make room for small appliances). With an 18-inch backsplash, the total measurement should be 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the upper cabinets. If your floor is not level, be sure to measure from the highest point along the wall.

Draw a horizontal line across the wall at this 54-inch point which will serve as a guide for hanging the cabinets. Be sure to use a level to assure this line is true horizontal.

Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs. The wall studs are crucial to properly support the weight of the cabinets. Note: Pay careful attention to the position of all electrical wiring and plumbing.

#How to Install Under Cabinet Lighting in Your Kitchen

    COST

    Step 1: Project overview

The best time to install wiring for undercabinet lights is during a kitchen remodel, before the walls are covered with drywall. But if you want undercabinet lighting and aren't planning any major renovations, don't despair. The wiring plan we show in this article is designed to work in almost any kitchen, and can be installed without visible damage to the walls. And since we're using the inside of the base cabinets to run wires, you don't even need access to a basement or attic.

The National Electrical Code requires that plastic-sheathed cable (commonly called Romex) be protected in areas where it's subject to abuse. Since we're running the cable in the back of cabinets where pots and pans could bump it, we've chosen to be safe and run the cable inside a flexible steel conduit (called “flex”). We'll show you how to cut and install flex and then how to pu ... Read more »

#How to Layout an Efficient Kitchen Floor Plan

    • Layout work surfaces: A work surface, or countertop area should ideally be located between each of the work triangle areas.  Therefore, between the refrigerator and sink, and between the sink and stove/oven, a countertop area is ideal. In smaller kitchens, a work area in each space may not be possible due to space.  The more working areas you can provide yourself, the better. Consider using multifunctional work areas if space is an issue. For example a raised countertop adjacent to a dining area, can serve as a seated bar for eating as well as a preparation work surface for cooking

    • Kitchen islands: In large kitchens a kitchen island can cut down on excessive travel to each part of the work triangle.  Consider placing one or more of the work triangle functions at the island. Having a sink in the island will prevent you from walking from the refrigerator to ... Read more »

#Would you do a kitchen with all drawer base cabinets?

Without a second thought (taking into account the sink exceptions you noted which functionally require doors). The only exception would be in a kitchen with no additional storage where you could stash really huge pots (pressure canners and ginormous stock pots come to mind). Even then I might do a pullout (essentially big vertically-oriented drawers when you think about it) and have lids and trays in the front with big pots behind. I am having no doors in my new kitchen if can help it.

I have done all my base cabinets drawer.

My sink does not require doors. I have an apron sink and refuse to crawl around on the floor to find something under it. Even with a garbage disposer, I designed a drawer that's lower in the back, taller in the front. I put a drawer front on it and voila! another drawer. Plus, a more functional space for me.

#How to Match Floor Tile - Kitchen Cabinets

Don't forget to take your wall tile and countertop into consideration as well.

    Style

One of the first things to look at when selecting your floor tiles and cabinets is to coordinate their style. Contemporary, slab style cabinets work best with floor tiles that have clean edges and narrow grout joints. Raised panel cabinets can handle multipiece pattern tile floors, as well as floors stone tiles. Cabinets that have strong lines or pronounced wood grain need a floor tile with equal character to stand up to them. This includes slate or tiles made to look like other materials, such as wood or fabric.

    Color

The floor tile often needs to balance the colors in the rest of the kitchen. For example, a kitchen with light cabinets and dark counters would have a dark floor to provide balance. If going for a kitchen that uses multiple shades of one color or tone, choose floor tiles that pick up the darkest ... Read more »

The Best Commercial Kitchen Flow Floorplan Ideas | eHow

Prior to tackling the kitchen design, a menu should be established. This will aid in selecting the equipment needed, which will dictate some of the layout. Proper layout will help optimize positive attributes of a space while minimizing the negative, a trick that is essential to having a properly functioning kitchen. Space limitations can be a serious problem, and are common in older locations. Use a small space to help minimize menu options and select proportional equipment. Safety, including proper lighting and space to move freely is another consideration, which goes hand in hand with ergonomics, often the prime consideration of kitchen design. Creating a safe space while eliminating wasted time and energy will keep employees happy, and prevent injuries and fatigue.

An ergonomic layout is a strictly functional setup, one that has equipment arranged in the best way for the chef and kitchen staff. The placement of equ ... Read more »

#How to Light a Kitchen: Track vs Recessed Lighting (Reviews

Invariably, the decision will be track vs recessed lighting when lighting a kitchen. Track and Recessed lighting are two of the most common types of task lighting used for lighting up a space. In every application, task lighting is necessary if you want to achieve proper lighting. It's like the skeleton of the body, whereas the other elements of lighting design: decorative, accent and ambient provide the affects or personality of the room.

The two are so different, with track being pronounced and recessed being invisible, and as you can imagine, there are huge differences.

    Track Lighting

When people hear the word “Track Lighting” they instantly think of big, bulky, ugly track heads. Those days are gone. There are 100’s of decorative track heads available for different types of tracks. There are 3 systems of track lighting.

#How To Paint a KitchenAid Mixer a New Color

    Apartment Therapy Tutorials

If you've ever thought, "what was I thinking when I picked out that color?" while staring at your kitchen mixer, this DIY might just be for you. For around $10 you can repaint to freshen up or completely change the look of your mixer —a pretty sweet alternative to shelling out a few hundred bucks for a new machine!

    Instructions

    1. Take photos from a few different angles of your machine. Depending on how much you decide to disassemble, this reference will come in handy.

    2. Throughly scrub your mixer with all-purpose cleaning solvent, making sure to remove any gunk/grease/cookie dough that is stuck to the machine.

    3. Start to disassemble your machine. You can easily remove the end cover and the bowl clamping plate, and in most cases the silver strap around the top of the machine (there is a small screw near the lower left side of the motor).

    #How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

    How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

There are many ways to paint kitchen cabinets (I ve tried most of them over the years with varying degrees of success) but this is the way that I have found to be easiest and get the best results.

The picture above shows a base unit and wall unit in my kitchen. It was a dull and underused spot not made any better by the weird Apricot coloured laminate kitchen that I had started to paint a while back.

The paint is Annie Sloan Old White . It needs no undercoat and you just paint it straight on to the cupboards. These cupboards needed two coats and the great thing about it is that the paint goes on very quickly. It is a very easy product to use. I did most of this unit when the children were having their breakfast over about a week and when they had gone to bed for about half an hour. The unit itself is a bit chipped on the sides and one of the drawers rubs but that can be fixed with a new ... Read more »

#How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets - Better Homes and Gardens.

    What You Need

    Paint tray and stir sticks

    Seek Advice

Before you start painting your cabinets, it pays to prepare for the job ahead. If possible, take one of your doors to your local paint retailer and talk with a pro about what kind of material you're working with and what products will help you achieve the best results. The pros can give specific advice if they know more about your project.

    Choose a Primer

Select a primer that's recommended for the type of surface you have (wood, metal, or laminate) and have it tinted to the color of the top coat. This is especially important if the surface is dark or stained because the original finish can "bleed," or be visible, through the top coat. Again, consult with the expert at your paint retailer who can help you decide between a waterborne or solvent-borne primer.

    #How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

    How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

I want to repaint my kitchen cabinets. Do I need to sand and prime them before painting? Also, what kind of paint should I use? ” -Courtney

    Hi Courtney,

Start by cleaning your cabinets thoroughly to remove any dirt and grease. Next, take off the hinges and knobs, and lightly sand the cabinets to remove the gloss for better adhesion (or use a liquid deglosser).

While priming never hurts, whether it’s necessary or not is determined by the type of paint (oil or latex) currently on your cabinets and the type you plan to use for repainting. If you’re changing the type of paint or painting over natural wood cabinets, then it s important to prime the cabinets first.

If you are repainting with the same type of paint that is on them now, then priming is optional. To determine the type of paint on your cabinets, and learn more about primers in general, read our article A ... Read more »

Goodness gracious this is going to be long, so let s go!

We spray painted our hinges with brushed nickel spray paint, so my boys put the screws in a piece of styrofoam to get them ready for spray paint.

    #How to rehang a door

E very kitchen has a cupboard door that doesn't shut properly, or drops to the floor when we try to open it. Many of us have lived with them for years. Until now that is - all you need is a screwdriver and little know how.

The special hinges on cupboard doors have an array of screws holding them in place. The trick is working out which screws to adjust. The concealed hinge has a clever design, which allows the door to swing open without the need for extra space to the side of the cupboard. It does this by allowing the part of the hinge attached to the door to extend, moving the door outwards as it swings open. There are three ways to adjust it.

    1. Vertical position of the door

This is controlled by adjusting the position of the inner part of the hinge. Different models have different ways of controlling this. The simplest have oblong screw holes. To adjust these, loosen the A and B screws (see diagram above) on both the ... Read more »

How to Install New Kitchen Cabinets | how-tos | DIY

DK - Do It Yourself Home Improvement, 2009 Dorling Kindersley Limited

Take time to prepare the wall surfaces and assemble the kitchen cabinets before installing them. Drawing the first guide line for positioning cabinets is essential to the success of the whole project. Cabinets and countertops are heavy items, and you will need someone to help you lift them into position.

    Laying Out Cabinets

    • The starting point for installing any kitchen is a level guide line for the top of the base cabinets. A height of about 34-1/2 above the floor is standard. The countertop is added later.
  • Start in one corner, using a level to guide you. Older floors can be uneven, so check the line’s height at intervals to make sure base cabinets and appliances will fit beneath it comfortably along the entire length.
  • Mark a second line to show the thickness of the countertop. Generally, wall ... Read more »

New project for a new year: Update your cabinets without replacing them entirely, as a DIY project or with help from a pro

    Save

    Project: Refacing kitchen cabinets.

First step: Determine if your cabinets can take the restoration process well enough to be revitalized for at least another 10 years of life. If the cabinet body, or carcass, is in bad structural shape, is water damaged or will not take to refinishing well enough, you might have to replace the cabinets in a full kitchen remodel.

Why reface: In the most basic process, you will be leaving the cabinet intact and in its same place. This avoids the expense and effort of taking out and replacing the entire cabinet. So the advantages are less expense, less material going to the landfill and a less-complicated construction process.

#How to plan a perfect kitchen layout

No matter how much you spend on your kitchen, if the layout isn t right, it s a waste of money.

When embarking on a new kitchen the first and most important step is to plan the layout in a way that makes the best use of the space. Though every home is different, there are four or five classic layouts, each with their own benefits: single and double galley kitchens with one or two continuous runs of cabinets; L-shaped kitchens that are built into a corner and offering optimum counter space; and U-shaped kitchens, which surround the cook on three sides with everything within easy reach.

Think carefully about how you plan on using your kitchen. Over the past few years one of the most common requests we have had is to create a multi-use space where clients can cook, eat, open the post, entertain and help with the children s homework. It s a reflection of the way many of us are choosing to live these days. Dining rooms are increasi ... Read more »

#How to Refinish Old Stained Kitchen Cabinets

Refinished cabinets can give a fresh look to a tired kitchen.

    Cleaning

Old kitchen cabinets can accumulate layers of dirt, grease and grime. New paint or stain won't adhere properly to dirty, greasy surfaces, so a thorough cleaning of your cabinets is a vital step in refinishing them. Prior to cleaning, use a screwdriver to remove the doors and drawers from the cabinets, as well as additional hardware, such as knobs and handles. Also, remove the shelves from the interior spaces of your cabinets. Wipe down the exterior cabinet surfaces with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. You can also opt for a natural cleaner made from distilled vinegar and hot water.

    Preparation

Preparing your cabinetry prior to refinishing can provide a durable, aesthetically-pleasing finish. Fill small cracks, holes and dings with wood filler. Sand your cabinets with 200-grit fine sandpaper to remove any peeling var ... Read more »

    #How to Refresh Kitchen Cabinets

    COST

    Overview

Short of a major addition, remodeling a kitchen is the most expensive home improvement project you'll ever undertake. And by far the most expensive part of this project is replacing or refacing the cabinets—so what's the solution? There are millions of kitchens that could be brought out of the Dark Ages if the cabinets received new hardware, a good cleaning, a fresh finish and perhaps some creative accents.

This article will tell you how to perform this cosmetic kitchen surgery in 30 minutes per door or drawer. For this average kitchen, the whole project took 20 hours. Another benefit is that your kitchen won't be out of commission while you work.

For this makeover, I removed and replaced all the hinges and handles, cleaned and refinished the doors, and cut and painted grooves in the faces. The plain-looking kitchen was reborn with a more stylish Craftsman appearance.

Solid wood worktops are available in a wide range of patterns and tones, ranging from pale birch to rich oak worktops. Wood is an eco-friendly worktop choice and offers hygienic, anti-bacterial properties, and is easy to repair. Wood can scratch and mark more easily than other worktops, which can be treated by sanding an oiling to improve durability.

If you favour an industrial looking kitchen, stainless steel is the ideal choice and also a very affordable option in a range of polished or matte finishes. #How to update kitchen cupboards

Cupboards painted with spray paint by Plasti Kote .

    Fit new handles

If there’s nothing drastically wrong with the kitchen units, your cheapest option is to replace the cupboard and drawer handles. This is an easy DIY job andmakes a huge difference. Wooden button knobs suit country kitchens while chrome bar handles add an urban edge. Stay contemporary with a leather design or go retro with quirky cupcake or ladybird knobs. For help, read our handy guide on how to change door and drawer handles .

If you’re bored with the colour of your cupboards, why not paint them? This does require a bit of time and effort but a change of colour can transform tired cabinets. Before painting, unscrew handles with a screwdriver. You can remove cupboard doors, but painting them in situ is better as you can do both sides, the top and bottom in one go and you won't have to rehang them.

#How to Replace a Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer

    Unscrew the locknut

Apply putty and reset the basket

Roll plumber’s putty between your hands into a rope the size of a pencil and wrap it around the lip of the drain opening. Press the strainer firmly down into the putty, add the rubber gasket, friction ring and locknut under the sink, and retighten the locknut.

If you discover a puddle of water in the cabinet under your sink, it may be caused by a leaky basket strainer. Old plumbing fittings can be tricky to loosen, but we’ll show you how to tear them apart and put them back together without any strain. You can pick up all the necessary supplies at a hardware store or home center.

To be sure the leak is coming from the basket strainer instead of a pipe joint, test the basket for leaks as shown in Photo 1. Once you confirm that the basket strainer is leaking, begin the removal process (Photo 2). Photo 3 shows how to remove the strainer locknut, which ... Read more »

Kitchen Ideas for Low Ceilings | eHow

Low kitchen ceilings can make the room feel dark and cave-like. Without resorting to a major renovation, there are some design choices that will help your kitchen feel more open, the walls appear taller, and the ceiling higher. Playing with color, lighting and patterns can achieve the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Get rid of any architectural details in the kitchen that run horizontally, except for the counters, of course. If the kitchen has a chair rail, remove it to give the walls a longer look. The chair rail and other horizontal design elements cut the wall into sections, making it appear shorter from floor to ceiling. Thick baseboards and crown molding will also shorten the walls.

A white or very light-colored ceiling will make it appear higher. A paint with a slight sheen will reflect light even more, giving the room an airy, open feel. The rest of the room should be painted or wall-papered a slightly darker color than the ... Read more »

#How to Remove Kitchen Grease on Ceiling Fan Blades

Ceiling fan blades in a kitchen suffer from greasy buildup.

    The Prep Work

Before cleaning the ceiling fan blades, it's helpful to get everything ready, including yourself, to avoid multiple trips up the stepladder. Place newspaper on the floor beneath the fan area if it has been a long time since the fan has been cleaned; globs of dust may fall off as you wipe the blades. Tape the ceiling fan switch down temporarily if children in the house may flip its wall switch on as you work. Gather extra supplies such as spare rags, paper towels and all the cleaners you'll need, setting them up on the stepladder's tray for instant access. Finally, wear eye protection or even a bandanna over your head to ensure that none of that greasy fan gunk ends up in your eyes or on your head.

    #How to Tile a Backsplash

    COST

Project overview: Planning, materials and tools

Nothing packs more style per square inch than mosaic tile. So if your kitchen's got the blahs, give it a quick infusion of pizzazz with a tile backsplash. Because the small tiles are mounted on 12 x 12-in. sheets, installation is fast. You can install the tile on Saturday and then grout it on Sunday.

Professionals charge about $20 per sq. ft. for installing the tile (plus materials), so you'll save $20 for every sheet you install yourself. The sheets cost $8 to more than $20 each at home centers and tile stores.

The total cost for our backsplash was about $200. Our sheets cost $10 apiece plus adhesive and grout. For an 8-ft. backsplash, you could save about $45 by using a less expensive tile. We chose slate tiles, which sometimes crumble when you cut them. Other types of mosaic tile, especially ceramic tiles, are easier to cut.

Choosing the best country kitchen decor often starts with selecting a color palette and theme for the room. Another good way to start is with a country-inspired focal piece, such as a vintage pie safe or rustic, wooden table. Decor featuring farm animals, vegetables and fruits are all reminiscent of country life. Rustic and vintage objects and signs can also help transform an ordinary kitchen into a country kitchen.

Country kitchen decor often features country colors, such as red, black and green. Fruit, such as apples, grapes and cherries, are reminiscent of country life and are well-suited for country kitchen decor. Choose colorful, artificial fruits to group in pottery bowls on shelves and counter tops. Vintage and reproduction plates, china and glasses are also available in a variety of fruit patterns.

Often the quality cabinets that exist in some of todays vintage homes are far more sturdy and of better quality than a lot of the cabinets on the market today. #In the Kitchen - Dealing with Clutter

    In the Kitchen

An organized kitchen follows two basic rules for effective storage: (1) store items close to where they will be used, and (2) keep frequently used items in the most convenient storage areas.

Look around your kitchen. Think about the tasks that you do there and apply the two basic rules.

Cooking: Pots and pans and cooking utensils that you use regularly should be kept close to the range. Pots that you use rarely can go in hard-to-reach corner cabinets, under the often-used pots, or even in the basement.
  • Eating and clean-up: Everyday plates, cereal bowls, glasses, and silverware should be close to the sink (or dishwasher), and/or close to where you eat, in easy-to reach shelves of upper cabinets. Special-occasion dishes can be kept on top shelves that are harder to reach, or in the dining room where you t ... Read more »

#Ideas for the Kitchen: Cabinet Door Inserts

Step 1: Decide on new door inset material

Installing new panels in old cabinet doors can really dress up a kitchen (and new panels are a lot cheaper than new cabinets). Insert materials include glass, translucent plastic, copper, metal, fabric, wicker and many others. Adding “feature” inserts to just one or two of your cabinet doors can be striking and very inexpensive. Our homeowners decided to install perforated metal inserts in all of their upper cabinet doors. They initially wanted to use stainless steel to match their appliances, but went with aluminum after discovering that it costs a third of the price and has a similar look (see “Buying Metal Inserts,” below, for tips on ordering).

    Kitchen Equipment Checklist | eHow

The size of the refrigerator is dependent upon the number of people in the household and their eating habits. Side-by-side models that are half refrigerator and half-freezer are the most accessible for kids, those in wheelchairs and shorter people. Parents who want to make sure their younger kids can't eat a box of ice cream for breakfast in the morning should consider the more traditional unit with the freezer door on top.

Ranges, oven and stoves are all major pieces of kitchen equipment that come in a wide variety of styles. The first choice you may have to make is whether to go with gas or electricity. Then you may need to decide whether you want a combination of stove and oven or whether these will be separate pieces of equipment.

The dishwasher was a luxury convenience just a few decades ago, but is just as much a part of the traditional makeup of kitchen equipment as the stove or refrigerator today. Dishwashers are available ... Read more »

    #Install a Tile Backsplash

    Lay Out the Backsplash

    Watch video of this step.

Wall tiles are typically thinner and lighter in weight than floor tiles. Many are made with built-in spacer on their edges, also known as lugs (image 2). If your tiles don't have lugs, ask your tile dealer for the proper size plastic spacers. Using spacers between the tiles will help maintain the proper gap and prevent the tiles from slipping downward before the adhesive sets up. The mastic will not adhere to the spacers; they can easily be removed and discarded before the joints are filled or grouted.

The backsplash space between a countertop and wall cabinets usually can be filled with two or three horizontal tile rows, depending on the size of your tiles. Because tiles create a grid-like pattern, try to choose tiles that fit this space wall installations look better when they are vertically even and symmetrical from end to end. Bull-nose or edge tiles of various ... Read more »
