We ve been plugging away on the kitchen. and now I can finally show you how we updated our old cabinets by adding trim, paint, and semi-open shelving!

The room was already looking worlds better, thanks to projects like the fresh white paint. wood floors. painting a bright red door. and raising the old header over the sink and adding a new pendant light rugs. But I couldn t wait to get my hands on the dated 50 s cabinetry.

I planned on removing the doors to the cabinet to the right to allow for semi-open shelving for an updated look and easy access to everyday dishes.

New hardware would be fun, but what we had was fine, so I planned to spray paint them all black so they would match each other and coordinate with the other black accents in the room.

American labeling laws require that ice creams have a fat content of at least 10 percent, with most ranging from 15 to 45 percent. Gelatos have no set standards and require less cream and fewer or no eggs, which are the main sources of fat in ice cream. But gelato s comparatively lower fat content doesn t make it a health food. Enjoy the creamy treat, but stick to a half-cup serving.

#DIY kitchen remodel: repurposed antique kitchen island. Pt 4.

1. We are going to replace the top of the piano.

I do not want to have to be careful with the original wood surface, so we are going to replace it with a slab of countertop material.

Carrara is my first choice, despite knowing the arguments against it, and despite the commitment involved with spending the next chunk of my life patrolling the island to be sure no one touches anything.

The floor of the piano box is SOLID. (It is built to support the harp which is heavy.) Paul will build a structure internally to make sure that the marble is supported across the entire span.

Removing the wood top will also give us some spare material – no specific plans for it, but always good to have.

Remove the hardware from the cabinet or cabinets with the screwdriver. This includes the hinges and door handle or handles. Set aside the door. Remove all of the shelves from inside the cabinet. Set them aside so they can be worked on later (Reference 1)

Sand the outside of the cabinet or cabinets and the doors with the 80-grit sandpaper. Use small circular motions to remove all of the old varnish or stain. Do not use a belt sander because you have very little control. Sand the door and the inside of the cabinet. Repeat the process with the 120-grit sandpaper. This will reduce the roughness left by the 80-grit and give a nice smooth appearance as well as a surface for the stain to adhere to. (Reference 1)

1. Head to your local home improvement store and purchase stock cabinets. We purchased four upper wall cabinets, 12" deep.

2. Attach the cabinets together, back to back using a combination of nails and screws.

3. Base cabinets come at a standard height, but it's a little low for an island, so we used 2x4s to make an apron that acted as a base and lifted it up to 36", standard countertop height.

Lately I ve been having this huge urge to decorate the house. This is big news. I do not decorate.

Arguably, one of the reasons why is because I. absolutely. hate. to. buy. mass. produced. decor. (Also, I can t ever remember if pink and purple go together or not.)

When you're edge-gluing boards into a large assembly like this, it's best to alternate the arc of the growth rings from one board to the next. You should also alternate your clamps above and below the assembly to prevent bowing. Use just enough pressure to squeeze out a bead of glue, then stop tightening. If you squeeze out too much glue, you'll create a weak joint.

Ensure surfaces to be painted are clean, dry and free of contamination. Walls should be wiped down with a mild detergent and rinsed clean with fresh water, even if they don't appear to be dirty, to ensure removal of any surface contamination and ensure the paint has a clean surface to adhere to.

Seal new or bare plaster with Taubmans Prep Right Plaster Sealer. Seal bare wallboards or Gyprock with Taubmans Ultraprep or Taubmans 3 in 1.

Remove all loose or flaking paint, wash all areas thoroughly to remove any surface contamination. Treat surfaces affected by mould with chlorine bleach diluted one part bleach to four parts water. Rinse clean with fresh water. Spot repair any bare areas such as filled holes as per directions for new work.

Apply two liberal coats by brush, roller or spray. Do not overspread. Keep brushes and rollers working freely by rinsing occasionally in clean water.

How to Paint Laminate With Oak Trim Cabinets (13 Steps) | eHow

Acrylic oil-based primer

Remove the cabinets from the hinges and take the hardware off the cabinets.

Clean the laminate with warm soapy water and a grease-fighting liquid dishwashing soap. Rinse the soap away and dry the surface with dry cleaning cloths.

Place painter's tape along the oak trim edges. Make sure to place the tape directly at the edge of the laminate and oak wood.

Scuff the laminate with 80-grit sandpaper. This medium texture sandpaper prepares the laminate surface by removing the glossy finish to enable the primer to bond with the surface.

Apply a coat of acrylic water-based primer. Use either a small sponge paint roller or paintbrush to paint the coat of primer. Let the primer dry four to six hours.

Sand the cabinets gently with fine 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe the dust away with a tack cloth.
