Kitchen Chalkboard Wall | The Hatched Home

We all have that one awkward wall, right? You  know the one. Its just kind of there. I have one of those walls too.

No, thats not true. I have a couple of those walls, but this one in particular is in my kitchen. Ive stared at this oddly sized wall for 5 years. Ive tried out various wall hangings and pictures, but nothing has stuck.

And then I had an epiphany.

I was in the middle of making dinner, desperately trying to make my brain remember all the groceries I needed to buy and I thought, if I could just write this down real Chalkboard Wall! quick.

How in creation did I not think of this before?

Chalkboard walls are everywhere. In fact, an entire wall in my basement is dedicated to the kids chalkboard wall. Of course it makes sense to have one in the kitchen.

I was able to use some leftover trim and chalkboard paint from other projects and just bought a piece of moulding for a little added interest.

The chalkboard wall cost me a whopping $11.98. Which was the cost of a 7 piece of moulding.

If you didn have trim or chalkboard paint on hand, the entire thing would cost you about $35. Still, not too shabby.

I started by marking out the space I wanted the chalkboard to be, then painted it before anything else.

Look, I colored outside the lines.

See? I can be wild and crazy.

Or perhaps it helped knowing the trim would cover it.

I used a miter saw to cut the vertical trim pieces to 42 . Then cut the moulding to 25 .

I attached the bottom piece of moulding with a brad nailer, making sure it was level. Then put up the two vertical pieces and finished it with the top piece of moulding.

It went up in about 35 seconds. I really love that nail gun.

I painted the trim white. And the chalkboard was done.

Heres the tools I used, minus the saw and paint.

And heres the chalkboard in its native state.

See why I wanted the moulding? The $11.98 is worth the extra detail.

I added Ikea hanging planters that will house fresh herbs. But the seedlings are still growing, so for now Ill settle on fake plants.

I wrote down my grocery list after seasoning the chalkboard. Whats seasoning a chalkboard? You basically color the entire board with chalk, then wipe it with a soft cloth. Youll want to do this so the first things your write on the chalkboard don get burned into it.

And now I have all the space I need to write my grocery list thanks to my new chalkboard wall and my epiphany.

Maybe you could make your awkward wall not so awkward?
