#Small Galley Kitchen Makeover

Design bloggers Monica and Jess turn a couple's tiny galley kitchen into an updated, functional space. They used a few tricks of the trade to get a high-end look in the room on a budget of just $1,200.

Monica and Jess are always looking for a challenge. So when they received a call for help from a couple looking to transform their dysfunctional galley kitchen, they couldn't pass up the opportunity. But when they discover that they only have $1,200 to complete the entire project, they know they will have to get creative.

Homeowners Matt and Linda have high-end taste and have sent over some inspiration photos representing what they want in the room. It would cost thousands of dollars to create the designer room that the homeowners desire. So, Monica and Jess have their work cut out for them. They plan to DIY their way to a custom look in the room for less!

Are Matt and Linda really ready to cut costs by simply painting countertops and appliances? Monica and Jess are willing to find out!

Homeowners, Matt and Linda, have lived with this cramped and dysfunctional space for a few years. Linda somehow even manages to run a bakery out of the tiny kitchen.

Jess plans to paint the kitchen cabinets white to give them an updated look. She starts by taking the cabinets off the hinges and lining them up outside. By painting the cabinets, which were in good condition, she is able to save thousands of dollars. She gives the cabinets a rub down with steel wool to take off the glaze and finishes them with a coat of white paint.

Then, Jess gets super creative and takes a break from all the painting by creating a marquee sign with a box and strobe lights. This fun project is very popular right now and will add a ton of character to the dining room.

Monica gets into the act by mimicking expensive subway tile for the backsplash with paint. With tape, a paint brush and four different sample paints, Monica adds a ton of style to the kitchen. This incredibly cheap project only cost $20!

Monica also painted the couple's countertops black using Rustoleum Countertop Coating. You can purchase it from Walmart, Lowes or Home Depot for about $20 per quart.

Next up, Monica shows a way to give inexpensive peel-and-stick vinyl tile a high-end look. By simply cutting the vinyl and laying it down in a herringbone pattern, this floor really stands out. While a new tile floor would cost thousand dollars, Monica gets the look for only $80!

After two days of painting and some creative spending, designers Monica and Jess have finished the complete transformation of Matt and Linda's galley kitchen. The new look is perfect for a baker and the additional counter and storage space was sorely needed. The homeowners were in tears that Monica and Jess were able to do so much with so little. With only $1,200 to spend, this kitchen went from dysfunctional to spectacular.
