Franco and Stacy have always wanted an island in their kitchen, but having one made can cost thousands. Carpenter Mark Bartelomeo shows Franco how to create a DIY island out of standard kitchen cabinets.

The kitchen is a gathering place in any home, and an island creates a fun place to sit, socialize and eat together. Here's how to create an inexpensive island out of basic cabinets.

1. Head to your local home improvement store and purchase stock cabinets. We purchased four upper wall cabinets, 12" deep.

2. Attach the cabinets together, back to back using a combination of nails and screws.

3. Base cabinets come at a standard height, but it's a little low for an island, so we used 2x4s to make an apron that acted as a base and lifted it up to 36", standard countertop height.

M any of you might remember back when I talked about my unfinished kitchen island and my uncertainty about how I was going to finish it (or if I was actually even going to keep it).

How to Make a Rolling Kitchen Cart Out of a Kitchen Cabinet | eHow

Purchase casters made of the proper materials for your type of flooring and that are made to hold the weight capacity for the cabinet and the items to be stored in the cart. For instance, if you are using a heavy cabinet made from real wood and storing a large stand mixer inside of it, the casters or wheels must be able to hold up under the weight. Choose a caster that exceeds the weight capacity of your intended use.

Turn the kitchen cabinet upside down on the floor. Measure the length along one interior side of the cabinet bottom. Cut a piece of 2-inch by 2-inch wood at the measured length. Apply wood glue along the length and ends of this wood support piece.
