Here's what my dining room looked like before I started my reno. i was ripping this whole wall of cabinets out anyway for my reno but I'm all about re-use/re-cycle

Step 1: find a set of 2 lower cabinets (if you're not lucky to have them already)

I was lucky enough to have taken 2 lower cabinets (with double doors) from my diningroom renovation that I can use for my kitchen island..and they match the kitchen cupboards

If you dont have any lower cabinets have a look at Restore/online etc or buy new I guess? But i like to reuse/recyle

I set the one cabinet in the kitchen just to get an idea of what it might look like when I'm finished

you should also have at least 3 feet of walking space around your whole island and it looks like I'm right on the measurement here so that's awesome!

#Would you do a kitchen with all drawer base cabinets?

Without a second thought (taking into account the sink exceptions you noted which functionally require doors). The only exception would be in a kitchen with no additional storage where you could stash really huge pots (pressure canners and ginormous stock pots come to mind). Even then I might do a pullout (essentially big vertically-oriented drawers when you think about it) and have lids and trays in the front with big pots behind. I am having no doors in my new kitchen if can help it.

I have done all my base cabinets drawer.

My sink does not require doors. I have an apron sink and refuse to crawl around on the floor to find something under it. Even with a garbage disposer, I designed a drawer that's lower in the back, taller in the front. I put a drawer front on it and voila! another drawer. Plus, a more functional space for me.

The picture above shows a base unit and wall unit in my kitchen. It was a dull and underused spot not made any better by the weird Apricot coloured laminate kitchen that I had started to paint a while back.

The paint is Annie Sloan Old White . It needs no undercoat and you just paint it straight on to the cupboards. These cupboards needed two coats and the great thing about it is that the paint goes on very quickly. It is a very easy product to use. I did most of this unit when the children were having their breakfast over about a week and when they had gone to bed for about half an hour. This article will tell you how to perform this cosmetic kitchen surgery in 30 minutes per door or drawer. For this average kitchen, the whole project took 20 hours. Another benefit is that your kitchen won't be out of commission while you work.

For this makeover, I removed and replaced all the hinges and handles, cleaned and refinished the doors, and cut and painted grooves in the faces. The plain-looking kitchen was reborn with a more stylish Craftsman appearance.

Roll plumber’s putty between your hands into a rope the size of a pencil and wrap it around the lip of the drain opening. Press the strainer firmly down into the putty, add the rubber gasket, friction ring and locknut under the sink, and retighten the locknut.

If you discover a puddle of water in the cabinet under your sink, it may be caused by a leaky basket strainer. Old plumbing fittings can be tricky to loosen, but we’ll show you how to tear them apart and put them back together without any strain. The fastest way to get the smoothest finish with latex paint is to use an airless paint sprayer, which you can rent for less than $100 a day. (Other sprayers are less expensive but require you to thin the paint to a precise consistency.) As you follow these spraying guidelines, be sure to wear a disposable respirator and cover anything in the vicinity that you don't want paint droplets to land on.

Prime the sprayer. Fit the gun with the proper-sized tip (see TOH Tip, below). Then stick the sprayer's siphon tube in a clean bucket of paint, and fill the sprayer, hose, and gun according to the instruction manual.

Rust-Oleum’s new Countertop Transformations coating system (available at home centers and some hardware stores) is a simple way to transform worn or damaged laminate countertops into a new countertop surface. Q: My husband and I will soon be closing on our dream house in the country. Sadly, it does not come with a dream kitchen the cabinets are oak and I hate them. My hubby thinks they are the bee's knees. My husband will not allow any painting and/or staining of these cabinets under any circumstances. He's given me complete decorative freedom over the rest of the house, so it's only fair to comply with this one hideous wish. So, I'm left to try to decorate around the cabinets.

Installing new panels in old cabinet doors can really dress up a kitchen (and new panels are a lot cheaper than new cabinets). Insert materials include glass, translucent plastic, copper, metal, fabric, wicker and many others. Adding “feature” inserts to just one or two of your cabinet doors can be striking and very inexpensive. Our homeowners decided to install perforated metal inserts in all of their upper cabinet doors.
