#How to make a kitchen Island from a set of lower kitchen cabinets
Here's what my dining room looked like before I started my reno. i was ripping this whole wall of cabinets out anyway for my reno but I'm all about re-use/re-cycle
Step 1: find a set of 2 lower cabinets (if you're not lucky to have them already)
I was lucky enough to have taken 2 lower cabinets (with double doors) from my diningroom renovation that I can use for my kitchen island..and they match the kitchen cupboards
If you dont have any lower cabinets have a look at Restore/online etc or buy new I guess? But i like to reuse/recyle
I set the one cabinet in the kitchen just to get an idea of what it might look like when I'm finished
you should also have at least 3 feet of walking space around your whole island and it looks like I'm right on the measurement here so that's awesome!
As you can see there's more reno's going on than just the dining room. I'm actually movin

This post will show a you a few skills needed to make beautiful cabinet doors for the kitchen or any cabinet.
Most people might not need NEW doors but just need an updated look. Look at how we glazed kitchen cabinets before we decided to expand our kitchen. It was easy, fast, and cheap but without a cheap look.
For the rest of us who NEED to start from scratch, here are some instructions.
Please note: We are not professionals. We do what works for us. Please keep that in mind thanks.
- 3/4 inch cabinet grade pine plywood (For the Door)

#How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets: A Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Bliss! Curbly
How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets: A Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Bliss!
Yesterday we had an interesting discussion about whether or not painting kitchen cabinets was a simple, one-weekend project. On Twitter. this commonly-repeated idea was referred to as "commercial break cabinets" and "design on a crashing dime". I'm here to burst a few bubbles and tell you that painting kitchen cabinets is absolutely NOT a one-weekend project. But you know what? It's still easy! And doing it the right way first will save you time and money later. That's a promise. So, if you've got a few weekends set aside for the lowest-cost, biggest-impact change you can make to your kitchen (and I haven't scared you away yet), read on!
We painted our kitchen cabinets as part of our recent kitchen makeover (which you can see more of here ). Going in, I, like many earnest DIYers of the past, h

#How to make your own curtains: 27 brilliant DIY ideas and tutorials
I m okay with the price of domestic plane tickets in general.
I know you were wondering.
Not that I enjoy paying for them, but I generally feel that transporting me through the air, defying gravity, is a service that should cost something. If Delta tried to send me to California for $3.99, I might feel suspicious.
However, based on my limited (and in some cases, nonexistent) knowledge of the world, there are many things that do cost more than they should, in The Economy According to Me. Here s an incomplete list:
1. Lamps (Should be $10 a piece. Up to $50 if it s fancy.)
2. Rugs ($2 a yard!)
3. Healthcare (Shazam, just dropped a current event on your face!)
4. Faucets
5. Underwear (How much did it REALLY cost you to make this tiny thing? Also, perhaps granny panties should be charged a different rate. But I don t make the rules.)

#Would you do a kitchen with all drawer base cabinets?
Without a second thought (taking into account the sink exceptions you noted which functionally require doors). The only exception would be in a kitchen with no additional storage where you could stash really huge pots (pressure canners and ginormous stock pots come to mind). Even then I might do a pullout (essentially big vertically-oriented drawers when you think about it) and have lids and trays in the front with big pots behind. I am having no doors in my new kitchen if can help it.
CEFreeman

I have done all my base cabinets drawer.
My sink does not require doors. I have an apron sink and refuse to crawl around on the floor to find something under it. Even with a garbage disposer, I designed a drawer that's lower in the back, taller in the front. I put a drawer front on it and voila! another drawer. Plus, a more functional space for me.
I just cut the cabinet ou

#How To Paint a KitchenAid Mixer a New Color
Apartment Therapy Tutorials
If you've ever thought, "what was I thinking when I picked out that color?" while staring at your kitchen mixer, this DIY might just be for you. For around $10 you can repaint to freshen up or completely change the look of your mixer —a pretty sweet alternative to shelling out a few hundred bucks for a new machine!
Instructions
1. Take photos from a few different angles of your machine. Depending on how much you decide to disassemble, this reference will come in handy.
2. Throughly scrub your mixer with all-purpose cleaning solvent, making sure to remove any gunk/grease/cookie dough that is stuck to the machine.
3. Start to disassemble your machine. You can easily remove the end cover and the bowl clamping plate, and in most cases the silver strap around the top of the machine (there is a small screw near the lower left side of the motor).

#How to plan a kitchen extension - by Phil SpencerRated People Blog
Kitchen extensions are a really good way to improve your home and add value. During the 80s and 90s the trend was to create as many rooms as possible, people wanted separate dining and utility rooms, whereas now there s a preference for open-plan.
Many potential buyers with young families want this room to be the heart of the home and kitchens really do sell houses. Therefore, if you re looking to add value to your home with a limited budget, focusing your money and efforts on creating a family kitchen/ living space is usually the best option.
There are a number of different options and considerations when extending your kitchen, depending on the type of property you own, how you want to use the space and of course, budget.
Single-storey extensions at the back of a house are increasingly popular, with full length sliding doors that draw a lot of light into the space. You can now buy off-the-

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I did not register for a KitchenAid mixer on our wedding registry. Oh, what a fool I was! I feel like registering for a KitchenAid is a rite of passage when you get married, and for whatever reason I neglected to do that. A year or so into our marriage I realized my mistake. I wanted to make cookies from scratch, I wanted to make homemade frosting! I wanted to make and bake so many magical things! But alas, I didn t have a mixer to make the whole process smoother. *Tears* So the hunt began. I searched high and low to find this magical appliance by scouring Craigslist, but no luck. And I wasn t about to pay the $400+ price tag for a new one!
One day, the heavens opened up and a college friend of mine said she was selling hers for a mere $100! I jumped at the chance

#How to Pick Kitchen Cabinet Drawers
Kitchen cabinets should be both beautiful and functional, which is where drawers and glides come in. Choose cabinetry that makes your kitchen life more convenient. Stronger glide technology has resulted in bigger drawers that can handle heavier items. Drawers now store everything from utensils, cutlery and spices to bulkier items like pots, pans, dishware and chopping blocks. Drawers may be kept simple without partitions or divided for easy organization. Drawer fronts typically mimic the style surrounding door faces and can be flush, overlay or lip-edged.
"One trend we've gravitated towards is drawer-only designs for base cabinetry," says Mark Hutker, an architect based in Martha's Vineyard. "In lieu of doors, we stack lower, middle and upper drawers for chef-inspired cabinet design."
Frequent use and heavy drawer contents call for drawer glides, which aid drawers in their function of opening and closing. Many cabinet manufacture

#How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets
How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets
There are many ways to paint kitchen cabinets (I ve tried most of them over the years with varying degrees of success) but this is the way that I have found to be easiest and get the best results.
The picture above shows a base unit and wall unit in my kitchen. It was a dull and underused spot not made any better by the weird Apricot coloured laminate kitchen that I had started to paint a while back.
The paint is Annie Sloan Old White . It needs no undercoat and you just paint it straight on to the cupboards. These cupboards needed two coats and the great thing about it is that the paint goes on very quickly. It is a very easy product to use. I did most of this unit when the children were having their breakfast over about a week and when they had gone to bed for about half an hour. The unit itself is a bit chipped on the sides and one of the drawers rubs but that can be fixed with a new

Centsational Girl Blog Archive Kitchen Countertop Options: Pros + Cons - Centsational Girl
We’ve been doing a lot of research lately on countertops since the fixer we’re buying has 25 year old Formica tops in the kitchen which will need replaced more details on the house coming soon! Seven years ago when we were choosing countertops for our own kitchen I exhausted myself researching all the choices that were on the market and finally settled on a marble countertop + wood on the island combo. I’ve never regretted it, I’ve loved those choices ever since. But seven years have passed and much has changed in the world of kitchen countertops.
We have other kinds of countertops in our home, white laminate in the laundry room, wood in the hall bathroom, and modern cultured marble in the master bathroom. All have performed well based on our expectations (images here ). Innovation is inevitable, trends come and go, so the decision as to which countertop to choose in a kitchen remodel

#How to Refinish Old Stained Kitchen Cabinets
Refinished cabinets can give a fresh look to a tired kitchen.
Cleaning
Old kitchen cabinets can accumulate layers of dirt, grease and grime. New paint or stain won't adhere properly to dirty, greasy surfaces, so a thorough cleaning of your cabinets is a vital step in refinishing them. Prior to cleaning, use a screwdriver to remove the doors and drawers from the cabinets, as well as additional hardware, such as knobs and handles. Also, remove the shelves from the interior spaces of your cabinets. Wipe down the exterior cabinet surfaces with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. You can also opt for a natural cleaner made from distilled vinegar and hot water.
Preparation
Preparing your cabinetry prior to refinishing can provide a durable, aesthetically-pleasing finish. Fill small cracks, holes and dings with wood filler. Sand your cabinets with 200-grit fine sandpaper to remove any peeling var

#How to Repaint Kitchen Cabinets
Quick home fixups: Refinish your kitchen cabinets with new hardware and paint
By Joanne Liebeler
I once bought a house whose kitchen was darker than a Chekhov play. The cabinets were dirty brown. The wallpaper was faded and spotted with grease. I knew I had to lighten up that space before I moved in a single dish. So I painted the cabinets―instant transformation!
Many of us have cabinets in good condition, but the finish is cringe-inducing. Fortunately, there’s an easy, albeit time-consuming, fix that doesn’t involve taking a sledgehammer to the room. You can paint the cabinets any color you like and top them off with new hardware.
Before you get too excited, you need to make sure your cabinets are paintable.
Solid wood, wood veneer, and metal cabinets take paint well, but laminate and melamine finishes do not.
If this is what you have, there is still a way to give them a face-lift, but it’s best don

Magic Kitchen ( ) (2004)
It wouldn't be Lunar New Year if reigning QOBO (Queen of the Box Office) Sammi Cheng didn't take her usual stab at box office supremacy. The 2004 entry: Magic Kitchen. produced by those ultra-commercial mavens at Media Asia, and directed by long-lost Lost and Found director Lee Chi-Ngai. The film boasts an eclectic supporting cast, including Maggie Q, Nicola Cheung, Stephen Fung, Daniel Wu, both the Beast Cops (Anthony Wong and Michael Wong), and usual Sammi Cheng co-star Andy Lau. However, the male lead is Jerry Yan of Taiwanese pop juggernaut F4, a curious choice given his obvious big-screen inexperience and lack of Cantonese fluency. But, when you consider the fact that Jerry Yan and Sammi Cheng are both spokespersons for Pepsi, it all suddenly makes sense. Once again, marketing shows us the way!
Cheng is Yau Murong, a talented chef who runs a private kitchen for a select clientele. She never wanted to be a chef, but found th

#How to Refresh Kitchen Cabinets
COST
Overview
Short of a major addition, remodeling a kitchen is the most expensive home improvement project you'll ever undertake. And by far the most expensive part of this project is replacing or refacing the cabinets—so what's the solution? There are millions of kitchens that could be brought out of the Dark Ages if the cabinets received new hardware, a good cleaning, a fresh finish and perhaps some creative accents.
This article will tell you how to perform this cosmetic kitchen surgery in 30 minutes per door or drawer. For this average kitchen, the whole project took 20 hours. Another benefit is that your kitchen won't be out of commission while you work.
For this makeover, I removed and replaced all the hinges and handles, cleaned and refinished the doors, and cut and painted grooves in the faces. The plain-looking kitchen was reborn with a more stylish Craftsman appearance.

#How to Replace a Kitchen Sink Basket Strainer
Unscrew the locknut
Apply putty and reset the basket
Roll plumber’s putty between your hands into a rope the size of a pencil and wrap it around the lip of the drain opening. Press the strainer firmly down into the putty, add the rubber gasket, friction ring and locknut under the sink, and retighten the locknut.
If you discover a puddle of water in the cabinet under your sink, it may be caused by a leaky basket strainer. Old plumbing fittings can be tricky to loosen, but we’ll show you how to tear them apart and put them back together without any strain. You can pick up all the necessary supplies at a hardware store or home center.
To be sure the leak is coming from the basket strainer instead of a pipe joint, test the basket for leaks as shown in Photo 1. Once you confirm that the basket strainer is leaking, begin the removal process (Photo 2). Photo 3 shows how to remove the strainer locknut, which

The fastest way to get the smoothest finish with latex paint is to use an airless paint sprayer, which you can rent for less than $100 a day. (Other sprayers are less expensive but require you to thin the paint to a precise consistency.) As you follow these spraying guidelines, be sure to wear a disposable respirator and cover anything in the vicinity that you don't want paint droplets to land on.
Prime the sprayer. Fit the gun with the proper-sized tip (see TOH Tip, below). Then stick the sprayer's siphon tube in a clean bucket of paint, and fill the sprayer, hose, and gun according to the instruction manual.
Set the pressure. Turn the sprayer's pressure-Вadjustment knob to the lowest setting recommended by the paint manufacturer. Hold the gun 12 to 14 inches away from a scrap piece of cardboard or paper and spray a test lin

#How to update kitchen cupboards
Cupboards painted with spray paint by Plasti Kote .
Fit new handles
If there’s nothing drastically wrong with the kitchen units, your cheapest option is to replace the cupboard and drawer handles. This is an easy DIY job andmakes a huge difference. Wooden button knobs suit country kitchens while chrome bar handles add an urban edge. Stay contemporary with a leather design or go retro with quirky cupcake or ladybird knobs. For help, read our handy guide on how to change door and drawer handles .
Preparation work
If you’re bored with the colour of your cupboards, why not paint them? This does require a bit of time and effort but a change of colour can transform tired cabinets. Before painting, unscrew handles with a screwdriver. You can remove cupboard doors, but painting them in situ is better as you can do both sides, the top and bottom in one go and you won't have to rehang them.

#How to Spray Paint Kitchen Cabinets
Overview
New-looking cabinets in 3 steps
Clean the old cabinets thoroughly, prime with a stain-blocking primer, and then paint with a high-quality latex enamel.
You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on new cabinets to give your kitchen a stunning new look. If your cabinets are in good shape, you can give them a fresh face with paint. Everything you need to give your drab cabinets a silky smooth painted finish costs less than $250—including the sprayer.
Professional painters typically spray-paint doors because it produces an ultra-smooth finish. In this article, we’ll show you how to spray-paint your doors and drawers. There’s just a short learning curve to use the sprayer effectively. You could also spray the cabinet frames, sides and trim, but masking off the cabinet openings (and the rest of the kitchen) takes a lot of time, so just use a brush for those areas.
Despite our enthusiasm, there ar

What Are the Different Types of DIY Kitchen Projects?
15,7,17,10,9,13,16,12,14,8
The different types of DIY kitchen projects will vary according to the homeowner's skill level when it comes to carpentry and other skills necessary to complete common construction tasks. Projects may range from the very simple, such as purchasing storage bins and organizing them in cabinets, to more advanced projects such as installing or replacing cabinets and countertops. Building an island is a more involved task, especially if the island will feature plumbing, electricity, or any hook-ups for kitchen utilities. DIY kitchen projects are usually less expensive than hiring a contractor, but they will be more time consuming.
One of the most common DIY kitchen projects is installing a backsplash. A backsplash is mounted on the wall above a stove, sink, or around the perimeter of a countertop. The purpose of this unit is to protect the wall from moisture and food splatters common during

#Ideas for the Kitchen: Renew Kitchen Countertops
COST
Overview
Rust-Oleum’s new Countertop Transformations coating system (available at home centers and some hardware stores) is a simple way to transform worn or damaged laminate countertops into a new countertop surface. The product is available in five colors ranging from light to very dark (for this project we chose Charcoal).
The big pluses of this system are it’s not smelly or difficult, you don’t have to remove your countertops (!), the instructions are clear, and the kit comes with everything you need (except basic painting tools), plus it includes a very detailed DVD. This product can be applied to any laminate or hardwood countertop in reasonable condition. Burns and scratches are fine, but fill deep dents and chips before you use it.
After using this product, we can report that it’s surprisingly easy to apply. In terms of durability, the manufacturer compares it to laminate. We can’t sp

#How To Update Outdated Oak Kitchen Cabinets?
Q: My husband and I will soon be closing on our dream house in the country. Sadly, it does not come with a dream kitchen the cabinets are oak and I hate them. My hubby thinks they are the bee's knees. My husband will not allow any painting and/or staining of these cabinets under any circumstances. He's given me complete decorative freedom over the rest of the house, so it's only fair to comply with this one hideous wish. So, I'm left to try to decorate around the cabinets.
We don't have a huge budget and will not be able to replace the countertops right away because the flooring is priority. I'm thinking a muted blue on the walls and thick-striped black and white rug for a more modern look. He did agree to let me paint the trim (around doors, baseboards, etc.) white to match the rest of the house. Possibly black or brushed nickel hardware? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, think less

#Ideas for the Kitchen: Cabinet Door Inserts
Step 1: Decide on new door inset material
Installing new panels in old cabinet doors can really dress up a kitchen (and new panels are a lot cheaper than new cabinets). Insert materials include glass, translucent plastic, copper, metal, fabric, wicker and many others. Adding “feature” inserts to just one or two of your cabinet doors can be striking and very inexpensive. Our homeowners decided to install perforated metal inserts in all of their upper cabinet doors. They initially wanted to use stainless steel to match their appliances, but went with aluminum after discovering that it costs a third of the price and has a similar look (see “Buying Metal Inserts,” below, for tips on ordering).
Homeowner comment:

#How to Tile Your Kitchen Backsplash in One Day
Tiling a Kitchen Backsplash in One Day
Everyone loves instant gratification. One problem with kitchen remodeling, though, is that gratification is often achieved slowly and laboriously.
So, for the sake of your sanity, you sometimes need to dip your hand into projects that can be finished quickly and offer eye-popping results. Backsplashes are just that kind of project: fast, beautiful, practical, and yes, instantly gratifying.
Why Backsplashes Stand Out
Spend a weekend painting a ceiling, and people never notice. Replace your windows to the tune of several thousand dollars, and guests politely say, “Hmm, nice.”
But backsplashes attract immediate attention. More importantly, you will feel like you have made major inroads toward creating a brand-new kitchen – for little more than you would spend on a weekend trip.
The reasons are because kitchen backsplashes are:
