How to Decorate the Tops of Kitchen Counters | eHow

Use accessories to create a kitchen that's functional and matches your design aesthetic. Invest in stoneware crocks to store utensils as well as labeled crocks for potatoes, onions and bulbs of garlic. This mix of stylish open and closed containers keeps essential items close at hand, and their beauty makes kitchen work pleasurable. For kitchens with ample counter space, bring in color with an oversized vase filled with fresh flowers or a herb garden nestled in a terrarium. For kitchens with less counter space, decorate with a single peony flower in a teacup.

Frequently used items and popular snacks often find their way out of the cabinets and pantry and onto the counters. Rather them leave them in their boxes, arrange them artfully in decorative and functional storage canisters. FUN DIY PROJECTS FOR YOUR HOME

Have you got tree stumps lying around outside? why not paint the tops of them and you ve got yourself some pretty handy side tables.

On a similar theme to the stump side tables what about using birch off cuts to create shelving units.

Have you got some salad servers that are looking a bit bland? Head to the hardware store and choose some colourful wood stain and dip the ends of the servers into the stain. The longer you hold the servers in the stain the deeper the colour will be so to create an ombre effect hold it on the stain less each time.

Not a fan of ugly electrical cords? no neither am I wrap your cords in some twine rope. Much more pleasant!

Another great DIY shelving idea. Use old crate boxes or even dresser drawers, paint and add wallpaper to the inside and hang at different levels.

DIY Kitchen Chalkboard

When we built the cabinet around the refrigerator it not only gave the area a nice built-in look but it also left us with a giant blank canvas on the adjacent wall. Honestly, from the time we drew up the layout of our new kitchen, I had it set in my mind what that blank space would be. We DIYed a floor to ceiling chalkboard wall with a painted calendar in our first house and I have been dying to have some chalkboard back in my life. Insert, our new chalkboard wall

We started by priming the area with a few coats of Rust-Oleum s magnetic primer so the chalkboard would double as a magnet board. I know as the girls get older they will be loving this space to chalk on and play with their magnetic letters. Speaking of, how cute are these stainless steel letters from Pottery Barn? Must have.

We followed with three coats of Valspar s Chalkboard Paint in a basic black and she was ready for chalking. Well, almost. You know how we love our built-ins, so ... Read more »

I m using a jar from Tropical Traditions at the moment, but I also like the Nutiva brand which is pretty affordable on Amazon. I find that most coconut oils that are labeled organic and extra-virgin work well, regardless of the brand. #How Much Does a Kitchen Makeover Cost?

See what upgrades you can expect in 3 budget ranges, from basic swap-outs to full-on overhauls

Click "Collaborate" to invite people to view or add to this ideabook.

How much is it going to cost? This inevitably comes up during an initial consultation for a remodeling project, and is important to address. As an architect, I usually provide ballpark ranges early on in the process to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that the scope of work we are talking about is realistic for the budget the homeowner has in mind. A more detailed construction estimate comes later, once a design has been completed.

While the third option is indeed the most costly, it is usually well worth it for the improvement of space and functionality that can result. Things such as natural light and space flow may be less tangible than granite countertops, but they are infinitely more important in creating a space that feels g ... Read more »

#How Much Does Refacing Kitchen Cabinets Cost?
Nov 16, 2011 8:30:00 AM

Selecting your cabinet design is one of the most important decision you will make when it comes to your kitchen remodel. The cabinets comprise the largest visible square footage in your design so, in most cases, they are the driving force when it comes to how your kitchen presents itself upon completion.

Thus, the decision becomes: do we rip everything out and build new custom cabinets, or do we reface the cabinets we have?

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets is an Efficient Solution Across the Board

Before we discuss the costs, it's important to understand what "cabinet refacing " really means. At the basic level, the cabinet refacing process preserves the skeleton and cabinet boxes and then adds a new finish, new door styles and potentially new interior cabinet and drawer organization as well. When Kitchen Magic does the job, you also benefit from our proprietary dou ... Read more »

#How to Build a DIY Kitchen Island - Cherished Bliss

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Frigidaire and Lowe s. All opinions are 100% mine.

When we decided to have our Frigidaire Professional Appliances installed, we had a few things we wanted to change in our kitchen. I already shared with you how I altered our kitchen cabinet next to the stove and opened things up. I also took out some of our cabinets that were attached to the wall and built a walk around DIY kitchen island.

In the winter we use the back door in the kitchen to enter our house, but there is never a place to take off our shoes since the door would open straight into the cabinets. Now we can fully open the door and make room for everyone. The kitchen is also the room where everyone seems to congregate, so it s nice to have a place were people can gather around and eat snacks or serve meals!

Building an Island might sound a little scary, but it s not as hard as you might think! ... Read more »

How to Buy a Cheap Kitchen Countertop (7 Steps) | eHow

Accurately measuring for countertops is probably the most critical step in this process. Removing the existing countertops makes measuring easier. Measure inches and record your measurements on graph or lined paper.

Determine the depth of the lower cabinets by measuring from the back wall to the front of the cabinet. Lower cabinets are usually set between 24 to 26 inches from the wall. Standard pre-made tops completely cover this space if the depth is within those measurements.

Measure the length of the countertops by holding the tapemeasure along the back of the cabinets against the wall. If the counter has an L shape, do the same kind of measurement on both lengths. Having the longest measurement of each section lets you know what size of pre-made top to purchase.

Purchase the top longer than your longest measurement. If your longest measurement is 90 inches, purchase a 96-inch piece. Some of the pre-m ... Read more »

What Are the Different Types of Shaker Kitchen Cabinets?

14,12,16,15,8,9,13,17,10,7

Although all Shaker kitchen cabinets will have straight lines and minimal details, differences in materials, finishes, hardware and frame types set apart the available cupboard options. A neat, simple look is the hallmark of the Shaker furniture, which dates to the 1700s when immigrants of the Shaker religion settled in the United States. Modern takes on Shaker cupboard doors often include glass inserts, which can be a great choice for displaying neat rows of dishes or glass canisters.

The width of the wood frame around the glass will vary widely in thickness on different Shaker kitchen cabinets. The combination of a smaller glass insert and a larger expanse of wood around it can be eye-catching in design. This overall look is still very Shaker in style, as the cabinet door will be smooth and look neat, yet the contrast of the two materials used in different amounts can be interestin ... Read more »

#How To Choose An Extractor Fan For Your Kitchen

Every time you cook something vapors and gases are released, sometimes it s in the form of steam, sometimes it s smoke, and sometimes it s invisible.  Because you re cooking, these warm, moist vapors often contain oils, which turn into grease as the vapor makes contact with your cupboards and furniture, resulting in a sticky, unsightly residue and unpleasant odors.

Over time, without a range hood or exhaust fan, excess moisture from the steam can cause extensive structural damage in your kitchen.  If you do a lot of cooking it won t take long for mold and mildew to set in, and once that happens it can be very difficult to eliminate.

Exhaust and extractor fans are included in most kitchens when the house is being built but that doesn t necessarily mean it s the right fan for your needs, nor does it mean it s the best quality fan.  If it s time to buy a new range hood for your kitchen and you re not sure what you re loo ... Trash Cans: Find Household Trash Can Designs Online

The size of your trash bin should correspond in some way to the size of your household. The more people at home, the bigger it should be. For smaller households, it might be tempting to go for a larger container in order to make less trips outside to the garbage. But just remember, the longer you keep the same bag, the more likely unpleasant odors will develop. Stick to a size that can hold about a week’s worth of garbage, so that it can be emptied and taken to the curb for the trash collector on each visit. For larger families, you might have to make multiple trips a week.

This is a tough one. Most prefer to put the waste receptacle somewhere out of eyesight. This is a great idea, particularly if there is no top to your bin (no one wants their old trash on display). However, the bin must also be easily accessible — the last thing you want is to be searching for the garbage while trying to prepare a meal.

How to Make an Apron (12 Steps) | eHow

Choose 1 1/4 yards of fabric for your apron. If the apron is for gardening or other outdoor work, choose a heavy fabric such as denim or canvas. Otherwise, choose a medium-weight fabric. Prewash the fabric.

Make a paper pattern for your apron out of butcher or kraft paper. Lay the paper on a fabric cutting board and use a yardstick, pencil and scissors to measure and cut the paper to 36 inches by 25 inches. Position the paper so that the 25-inch ends are to your left and right.

Make a pencil mark 8 inches down from the top left corner on the left short edge. Now make a mark 10 inches from the top left corner on the top long edge. Rotate the paper to the right so that the short left edge is now at the top.

Start at the first pencil mark you made in step 3 and draw a line that gently curves down and out toward the second pencil mark. This line will form the bib portion of the apron.

Fold the apron fabric lengthwis ... Read more »

#How to Choose Wood Floors With Cherry Kitchen Cabinets

Cherry-wood cabinets bring warmth to the kitchen.

Wood Flooring Types

A wood floor in the kitchen must stand up to the abuse it takes. Avoid using soft woods for flooring in kitchens, unless you want your floor to look distressed with dings and dents. Wood flooring options include solid hardwoods; engineered hardwoods; bamboo, even though it's from a plant; and cork flooring, which is made from the cork oak tree. Native hardwoods include oak, maple, walnut, cherry, birch and hickory. But you can also choose from exotic woods such as acacia, tamarind, mahogany and teak. Along with the type of wood, you also have the option to choose a stain color that blends, contrasts or complements your cherry cabinetry.

Cherry Wood Floors

Cherry floors stained the same color as your cherry cabinets make your entire kitchen cohesive, but it may be too boring a look. While cherry wood floors offer d ... Read more »

#How to Clear Clogged Sink Drains

COST

Step 1: Get the right tools to start

A clogged kitchen sink can wreck a perfectly good evening in front of the tube. Instead of settling in to watch the Series, you'll find yourself staring at a sink full of dirty, backed-up water and wondering whether to call in a plumber ($$$$$). However, with two inexpensive tools and a little practice, you can fix this mess in less than an hour.

In this article, we'll show you how to use a plunger and snake to clear up all but the most stubborn drain clogs. Plungers are sold at any hardware store or home center (lead photo). Those with larger rubber bells deliver more thrust, but most will work for kitchen drains. Be sure it has a stout handle so you can apply plenty of force.

A snake (sometimes called a hand auger) ranges from cheap to inexpensive, depending on the size, length and turning mechanism. For all-around use, we recommend a 3/8-in.model that' ... Read more »

#How To Deal With The Blind Corner Kitchen Cabinet

How To Deal With The Blind Corner Kitchen Cabinet

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

In attempts to clarify she wrote,

I have no idea what else to call it. It is the one that you can reach into, but then have to practically crawl into to get to everything you ve stuffed into the corner of it. This is a horrible explanation, but hopefully you know what I m talking about!

How Do I Choose the Best Kitchen Utensil Holder?

7,17,13,12,8,9,15,10,16,14

With the wide variety of styles available, choosing the best kitchen utensil holder can be difficult. There are holders that look like rustic pottery and others that look like pieces of steel machinery. The decor of the kitchen, the number and type of utensils that need to be stored and the size of the area where cooking takes place are all going to help determine what the best kitchen utensil holder is for a person's particular needs.

There are three main types of kitchen utensil holders. The first type looks like a small bucket and is designed to hold a variety of different spoons and spatulas where they are easily accessible. The second type is a specialized holder for just one type of utensil or only a single utensil, such as a standing spoon holder. The third type is a wall-mounted holder that uses magnets, hooks or clamps to hold the utensils in place. The one that is best for a given ... Read more »
