Top Rated Kitchen Knife Sets | eHow
Wusthof Classic knives consistently beat their competition as the best overall kitchen knife set, according to Consumer Search, which aggregated several knife reviews. Wusthof Classic series knives are forged from a single sheet of high-carbon steel and feature a triple rivet on the handle. A favorite among home cooks, Wusthof knives' also feature a full tang, or protrusion of steel into the handle, that extends through the handle, providing extra stability. Wusthof's Classic series has black handles, made from a molded, synthetic material. Overall, Wusthof knives get high marks for their heavy, forged blade, good balance and durability. On the downside, the handle could be thin for some tastes and run on the expensive side. A 10-inch chef knife costs about $75.
In the budget category, the stand-out is RH Forschner by Victorinox Fibrox. Cooking for Engineers, a popular food science website, tested the Fibrox knife set by chopping several

#French Country Kitchen Cabinets: Pictures, Options, Tips & Ideas
Characterized by intricate craftsmanship and refined but lived-in style, French country kitchen cabinets offer a unique twist on country kitchen style.
One of the trademarks of French country kitchen cabinets is "furniture style" features. The designs of these cabinets often incorporate moldings, intricate arches, glass-paned doors and other flourishes that hint at classic French furniture styles. Substantial, elegant hardware often completes the design.
Wood surfaces may be slightly antiqued or distressed to pair the elegance of the design with a welcoming, lived-in look.
Finally, metals and other contrasting materials may be paired with natural woods to give French country kitchen cabinets an ageless, antique feel. Copper and bronze design elements are common, hinting at a historical design that has evolved over time and incorporated many diverse styles.

#Tile Kitchen Flooring
When it comes to giving your kitchen a clean and classic look that's also extremely durable, you can't beat tile floors. There are nearly endless options to fit any design aesthetic and most budgets. Even better, given tile's universal appeal, it's a smart investment that can actually boost your home's resale value. Some of the more popular tile materials include ceramic, quarry, terra cotta, and marble, and they come in a great variety of colors. shapes, sizes, and patterns.
Design is rarely a limiting factor with tile, but there are downsides to the flooring. It is cold underfoot, provides a hard walking surface, and offers no sound insulation. Glasses or dishes dropped on a tile floor are unlikely to survive and echo can be a problem in a spacious kitchen unless area rugs are used. On the upside, tile is perfect for installation over a radiant floor heating system, which can be a smart investment if budget allows. Also, glossy finishes can be slick

Early American Kitchens - Pictures and Design Themes
Early American kitchens fit in with the Colonial, Georgian, and Federal architectural styles that date from about 1640 to 1840. Throughout our nation's history, architects have borrowed ideas from these early American styles to create the Colonial Revival and Neocolonial styles which we still use today.
Weathered blue shaker cabinets, gray soapstone countertops, knotty hardwood floors, and a rustic kitchen table speak to the early American style in this bright country kitchen.
History: When the New World was colonized, settlers from Britain, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and other European countries brought their own building traditions from their native homelands. Adapting their familiar styles to the new landscape and climate, they developed many uniquely American styles.
Design Features: While America's approach to kitchens has expanded with modern ideas and technology, t

How to Resurface a Kitchen Bench (10 Steps) | eHow
Place the bench in an area that can get dirty such as a garage or an empty unfinished basement. Sanding dust will fly throughout the area.
Sand the bench with 150-grit sandpaper, using an electric hand sander. Move the sander in the same direction of the wood grain. Do not push the sander into the wood; this can scratch the wood and will leave sander marks that will show up when you apply the new stain. Sand by hand the spindles and areas that cannot be reached by the sander.
Wipe down the bench with a tackcloth. The tackcloth is designed to pick up sawdust.
Fill in any gouges or deep scratches with wood putty, using a putty knife. Match the putty to the type of wood so that it does not stand out once it has been stained. Use stainable putty that it blends in with the rest of the bench. Allow the putty to dry and harden.
Sand the bench with 220-grit sandpaper. This second sanding will smooth out any

#The week in radio – Beats 1; Bunk Bed; Crisis in the Curry Kitchen
Crisis in the Curry Kitchen (Radio 4) | iPlayer
Last week, the BBC made several announcements about itself, but let’s ignore the whither Wimbledon palavers and keep to the ones that affect radio. Early in the week, Radio 4 revealed the highlights of its new radio season (Lauren Laverne doing a series of Late Night Woman’s Hour shows with Jane Garvey; Glenda Jackson returning to acting in a Zola adaptation: great). The next day, Woman’s Hour published its influence list (top three: Nicola Sturgeon, Anna Wintour, Angelina Jolie). And then, on Thursday, we were told the BBC would be shedding more than 1,000 jobs. Everyone seems resigned to the government getting rid of the licence fee, so it’s chopping early.
Meanwhile, riding high as always on its hog of Shiny Stuff We Don’t Actually Need, Apple launched Beats 1 radio on Tuesday night, an internet st

#Thrifty Living - Get Rid of Small Pantry Pests
Get Rid of Small Pantry Pests
Packaged foods are very attractive to many pantry pests. These unwelcome guests can even be found in a home that is spotless. They can crawl through cracks, fly through open windows or enter the home by hiding in a bag of groceries.
Grain and flour beetles are slender, flat, brown bugs about one-tenth inch long. They eat foods that come from grains such as flour, cornmeal and breakfast foods. They also like dog and cat food, nuts, candies and dried fruit.
These pests will multiply fast. You may see them in great numbers. When a container is opened, they will move quickly away from the light.
Indian meal moths are about 3/8-inch long with a 3/4-inch wingspan. These brownish moths have a gray band at the base of the wings and reddish or copper markings on the outer part of the wings.
Adult females lay their eggs in or near dried food. The eggs hatch into dirty-white

#U-Shaped Kitchen - Common Kitchen Layouts - Layouts - Design.
U-Shaped Kitchen
A One-Cook Kitchen
Like the one-wall and galley floor plans, a U-shaped layout is an efficient kitchen designed for one primary cook. Basically a wide galley kitchen with one end closed off, it keeps onlookers out of the main work area while remaining open to other rooms of the home and allowing traffic to pass.
Problems with the traditional U-shaped kitchen typically arise due to its small size. For one, it doesn't offer room for a kitchen table and chairs. Secondly, depending on where the sink is situated, it may be impossible to fit the dishwasher right next to it.
To address the seating issue, you can try, as shown here, a pass-through to the dining room on one of the "legs" of the U. Another option is to turn that leg into a peninsula by eliminating the wall and the upper cabinets. The peninsula counter can then be used for eating, homework or paying bills. Of c

#Tips for choosing between IKEA vs custom cabinets
After last week s look at the new IKEA kitchen cabinet system. we turned to seven Sweeten experts for guidance on the central question that most homeowners hit very early in kitchen renovation projects: should you buy custom cabinets or pre-fabricated cabinets? Cabinet construction may well end up being the single biggest expense of your entire renovation, and the results are the most obvious visual proof of your investment, so this can feel like a heavy decision. The challenge (and opportunity) is that your choices are endless, but if you focus on a few key factors, you can find the right cabinets for your new kitchen.
While it s tempting to assume that your budget is the only consideration, all of our experts agreed on a surprising truth: custom cabinets can be (much, much) more expensive than stock cabinets, but they don t have to be. Even the cheapest kitchen is an enormous investment, so if budget isn t necess

Shop Kitchen Countertops on Houzz
Laminate surfaces are inexpensive, available in a range of options, and easy to maintain. The downside is that they are not heat tolerant, and edges and seams are generally visible. They also scratch and chip easily, which is not easily repaired.
With no visible seams, lots of patterns and colors available and a renewable quality that allows cuts and scratches to be blended out, solid surfaces (which are basically a plastic) have several advantages. The downsides are that they’re not heat resistant, are pricier and require professional installation.
Granite, slate, soapstone, quartz, marble, limestone and gemstone all fall under this category. Long-lasting natural stone has an organic beauty and is more heat tolerant than other surfaces. It also expensive, and its porous quality requires sealing maintenance to prevent stains.
Engineered stone mimics natural stone, yet combines the properties of real stone with other ingredie

Kitchen Units in the UK - units and accessories are availlable
No matter whether your new kitchen is being designed/installed by yourself or a contractor, it pays to know the type, style and accessories of kitchen units available. Most replacement kitchen units can be installed by the average diy person and is a popular home improvement feature.
Each company selling units for diy installation offers a wide range of designs to suit taste, method of construction and the pocket. The two basic types types of contraction are pre--built and self assembly (or flat pack) - these terms refer to the construction of the basic carcass. Pre-built units are generally more expensive (for comparable quality of materials), require less work to install, are more rigid and offer a guaranteed quality of workmanship. Self assembly units are generally cheaper (comparing like with like), require effort to assemble, and, if assembled without due care, can often be damaged.

Kitchen Shelving Ideas | Interior design ideas
Modern kitchens are mostly modular in form owing to the dearth of space that one comes across in such kitchens. There are very few apartments and houses where the kitchens occupy a lot of space. Owing to the lack of space one has to make use of cabinets and shelves in order to contain all the items that are required for any kind of work in the kitchen. To create a sense of space in the kitchen some well known ideas for kitchen shelving can be taken into consideration. These are known to have a high success rate and are as follows.
Before installing kitchen shelves one should first take a walk around the kitchen area and locate possible areas where the shelves can be placed. The upper kitchen cabinets for instance can be moved in order to install shelves.
One can also install shelves in between the windows of a kitchen if there is enough space. Items which are required very frequently in the cooking process can be housed

Kitchen cabinet refacing instructions supply source information.
There are five ways to a beautiful new kitchen:
Simply Replace Your Doors With New Ones
The first and easiest way is to simply replace your existing doors and drawer fronts without doing anything at all to the boxes. If they are a wood grain you don t even have to have an exact match. Take a close look at your cabinets now. You ll see that typically you have areas that are both lighter and darker than each other. A light to medium oak door will work just fine in almost every case. A slight contrast can add interest.
The Euro Look
Invoke a warm, modern look by installing the very popular almond or white euro style door with continuous oak rail pulls and hidden hinges on your existing boxes. (Example: Almond euro doors on your existing oak or maple cabinets. Almond foreground, oak background.)

House built from recycled movie sets
Chloe Barcelou and Brandon Batchelder have built a tiny dream home on a tiny budget.
Click to watch News 9's coverage.
The house design was inspired by steamer trunks, ships and gypsy caravans, and its builders said it's almost ready to hit the road.
Chloe Barcelou and Brandon Batchelder work on movie sets -- she's a stylist, he's a carpenter -- and they designed and built their tiny dream home on a tiny budget.
"It's almost entirely made out of recycled materials that we've got from movie sets that we tore down, and we took all the wood," Barcelou said. "We found a lot of stuff at flea markets, thrift stores."
The house is designed to collapse so it can be towed.
"And then when you park it, you crank the ship's wheel, and the roof actually hoists up, and there are walls that fold out like a cardboard box, basically, and

#Tiling buying guide
Introduction
Types of tile materials
Tiles can be made from a variety of materials. Here are the benefits of the most common types:
Ceramic
Ceramic tiles are the lowest maintenance of all tiles; they don't need sealing and are waterproof after grouting. They're easy to cut and fix too - and thanks to inkjet printing advances, can mimic other materials like natural stone.

Granite is very hard wearing and can be used in most high-traffic living areas of your home. Its colour doesn't fade and once grouted and sealed, granite tiles are waterproof and easy to look after. You just need to reseal them from time to time.

Granite Tile Kitchen Countertops
With old stained, burnt laminate countertops staring at me for the last year of being in the house, I decided it was time to upgrade. I looked at the great instructable of doing concrete countertops. I milled it over in my head for months. But I didnt feel that I was up for the challenge- Also, I wasn t sure I was ready to not have a kitchen for more than a week.
I found the Quick and Easy Granite Countertops at Floor and Decor Outlets.
The Quick and Easy Countertops are 18 X31 and polished on all sides. This eliminates figuring to buy bullnose pieces, build a wood frame or hand polishing with the standard 12X12 tiles. Also the Quick and Easy tiles are 1/2 thick tiles.
The granite was about $12/sq. ft. and it ended up being around $25/Sq. Ft. for the finished product- including waste (I have a good few pieces of granite that I would like to try inlaying into wood projects) And one full 18 x31 piece that I will hold onto- just

#From the Pros: How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets
Want a major new look for your kitchen or bathroom cabinets on a DIY budget? Don't pick up a paintbrush until you read this
How to paint your kitchen cabinets.
1. Remove the hardware and hinges and clean the surfaces thoroughly. Bob Miano of DeGeorge Custom Cabinetry recommends using a clean, soft rag or T-shirt and mineral spirits or TSP (trisodium phosphate). Don't just wipe them down — give them a good scrub to remove old oils, waxes and grime. This is a crucial step. "Paint is a very forgiving material, but the one thing it refuses to abide is a dirty, greasy surface," says Philip Storey of Redhill Painting.
2. Lightly sand the painting surfaces to open the finish surfaces. If there are any dents or grooves in the cabinetry, you may want to fill them in with a good wood filler first. After sanding, use a clean cloth to remove any sanding dust.
4. Finish the cabin

How to Make a Corner Kitchen Sink Cabinet | eHow
Review styles and shapes of corner sinks before you design the cabinet. Visit home improvement stores and kitchen websites to review the many shapes and materials available for corner sinks. Use your favorite sink's measurements to decide how to lay out the countertop plan. Plan to build the cabinet across the corner with anyone washing dishes facing directly into the 90-degree corner angle. Design the cabinet to have two doors at the bottom.
Use graph paper to draw the surrounding counter space to the left and right of the corner. Create the corner cabinet to be secured to side cabinets or a false wall at a dishwasher or stove. Design and build the cabinet to blend with lower and upper cabinets in style and finish. Revamp the countertop to cover the new corner cabinet and leave room in the countertop to fit the sink and faucets with no visible seams. #Tom - s Kitchen: Gratin of Hearty Greens
I'm a greens fanatic: mustards, kale, collards, chard, you name it. I eat them in some form more or less every day, sometimes more than once. At this point, a meal even (or especially) something as simple as a fried egg for breakfast just seems naked, incomplete, without them. Their ubiquity in my daily life can make them seem unexciting for a special feast like Thanksgiving. Really, again, greens made like I always do them, saut ed with onion until tender and then finished with a lashing of vinegar? At the same time, there was no way I could imagine Thanksgiving without leafy greens especially since they reach their peak of flavor in the fall.
So rather than forsake them or serve them the same old way, I decided to dress them up into something richer and more elegant: a gratin. To get ideas on how to pull it off, I dug into James Peterson's excellent 2002 tome Glorious French Food. Along with rec

#Top 4 complete compact kitchens under $1400
Sometimes I have to smile when I read about tiny kitchens and the pictures show kitchens with even an island, lots of countertop space, 4-burner-stove with big oven and a huge refrigerator. And it reminds me that everything is relative, it’s just the way people look at it. For some their kitchen is tiny and for others it’s really tiny.
The good news is that people prefer more and more often small kitchens. Tiny kitchens are getting more popular in contemporary and modern living spaces.
In this post I refer to the “really” tiny kitchens, the ones that are something between 30 and 60 inches wide. Yes, this is possible and real. These are the sizes of the pre-manufactures compact kitchens you can buy at Amazon. These modular kitchens are usually all-electric and come with sink, countertop, cooktop, refrigerator, freezer and some storage space. Did I miss something?
What’s amazing too is that most of these pre-assem

LED Kitchen Lighting
A great kitchen is all about the details, and even a simple element such as lighting can make or break the design. The newest trend in kitchen lighting is using LED, or light-emitting diode, technology. These long-lasting and energy-efficient bulbs give off almost no heat, making them perfect for reducing fire risk in the warmest room of the home.
Kitchen designers recommend using a variety of LED fixtures to create layers of light. Even in the smallest kitchen, a single light source cannot provide all of the illumination needed to make the space functional. A good design plan starts with overhead lights, such as ceiling fixtures or track lighting. for general, or ambient, lighting. Next, use task lighting, such as under-cabinet fixtures or recessed cans, over each work zone to give extra light without casting annoying shadows. Finally, add visual interest by using accent lighting to call attention to architectural details or decorative items (for examp

#Wire Shelving Units in the Kitchen: Simple, Cheap, and (Yes! ) Stylish Organization
If you need extra storage in your kitchen, it doesn't get much simpler than a basic wire shelving unit. You can find tall units for around $60 at Home Depot, and with five or more shelves per unit, that's plenty of space to work with. But if you've always thought they were better suited for storing, say, golf bags out in the garage, then these photos may surprise you. Wire shelves in the kitchen can be both practical and stylish! See a few more examples below:
The key, as with any open shelving, is to keep it neat. Don't cram things onto the shelves. Retain a little breathing room. Create mini tableaus: a hanging row of stainless steel pots; a pretty pastel KitchenAid next to neatly stacked bowls; a row of copper pots with the handles all facing the same direction.
This is a great place to put a few baskets, too, for those items you're not keen on displaying outright.

Cheap Kitchen Countertop Fixes | eHow
Many people desire an attractive kitchen, but a kitchen renovation can be very expensive. Although a kitchen renovation can be a costly project, there are a few quick fixes that can inexpensively renew the look of your countertops. Painting over laminate or tile, tiling over laminate countertops or adhering inexpensive plywood to existing countertops are all affordable ways to spruce up a kitchen.
Laminate countertops provide a smooth, easy-to-paint surface. Lightly sand the surface, using 120-grit sandpaper to remove any sheen. Wash the laminate, using trisodium phosphate (also known as TSP and found in home improvement stores), then rinse to remove the TSP. When the surface is dry, apply melamine paint using a high-density foam roller for the best results. Apply three thin coats for the best coverage. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for drying time.
Remove the sink and faucet from countertop and sand well, using an or

#Valspar New Traditional Kitchen 1
INTERIOR STYLES
New Traditional
A fresh take on historical design that's what new traditional is all about. This style uses traditional structural elements, like furniture and architectural details, and combines them with lively and contemporary colors, fabrics and accessories. The result is a nod toward traditional elegance but in a way that breathes life and livability into your home.
New Traditional Decorating Tips
Provide a fresh balance to traditional furniture by choosing a modern rug that's monochromatic, has an overscale pattern, or has a texture such as sisal or sea grass. Bring in accessories, like vases and lighting, that have clean lines and a flood of color.
Traditional woodwork, such as kitchen cabinets, can take on an updated look with an unexpected color. Forego the traditional white cabinets in favor of a color-infused neutral. A kitchen island with milled legs takes on a new look in a

#Galley Kitchen - Common Kitchen Layouts - Layouts - Design.
Galley Kitchen
Efficient Cooking
The galley kitchen is perhaps the most efficient of all kitchens when it comes to the original and primary use of the kitchen: cooking. After all, this layout takes its name from the galley, or kitchen, of a ship or airplane. By nature and necessity, these kitchens make use of small, cramped spaces to feed tens or even hundreds of people. Many restaurant and other commercial kitchens are designed in similar fashion, with cooks working in a long, narrow space between appliances and counter space.
"From a functionality perspective, most kitchens in restaurants are galley kitchens," says Duncan Firth, chef de cuisine at Barona Resort Casino in San Diego. "For a chef, it works great. Everybody's lined up close together. Plates are on one side, pans on the other."
But what works in a commercial kitchen has some drawbacks in a home. The galley layout doesn't
