#WHEN THE DESIGN SOLUTION IS A COMPACT ALL-IN-ONE UNIT.
Published: January 9, 1986

IS it bigger than a breadbox?

Yes, but not by very much. The compact kitchen lives up to its name. Although there are a number of models on the market selling at prices from $800 to more than $4,000, all compact kitchens do essentially the same thing by combining, in a single unit, diminutive versions of standard kitchen appliances.

Into a space as small as 30 inches wide, compact units can include an oven, one or more burners, a refrigerator, storage shelves and, yes, the kitchen sink.

In the past few years these compact kitchens have become more flexible and more complicated. Where manufacturers used to offer only a standard set of units - ''perhaps four sizes and four colors,'' said Phil Forman, a Philadelphia distributor of the Dwyer line of compact kitchens - they now offer all kinds of options and variations. Among the add-ons are garbage disposals, push-button ... Read more »

#Quiet and powerful – Siemens extractor hoods

Automatically adjusts the fan speed to the amount of steam in the air - the climateControl Sensor

Performance to be proud of. The cleanAir recirculation module

Siemens cleanAir is an innovative recirculation module that will impress you. You can easily install it without modification in many Siemens extractor hoods, where it ensures top performance.

The fins and large surface area of the special activated charcoal filter remove up to 95 of odours and returns pure air into the kitchen. This figure is identical to that of an air extraction system and surpasses conventional recirculation systems. The efficient grease separation rate is also comparable with an air extraction system. And with all this, the cleanAir module is also very quiet.

The advantages are obvious: recirculation systems don't need a duct to the outside. In the winter that means no heat is lost to the outside, wh ... Read more »

#What Are Good Colors to Paint a Kitchen?

Create an interesting contrast by using bright hues with light colors.

Warm Colors

The stove doesn't have to be the only thing in the kitchen that gives off heat. Warm tones can produce a cozy ambiance when used as wall paint. In addition, hues such as reds, apricots and yellows also act as appetite stimulants, according to Leatrice Eiseman. These colors can be paired with a variety of colors that reflect the architecture of the home. For example, yellow was a popular color of choice in the Victorian era. You can mix up the color palette with a brown to marry the past with the present and set of any wood paneling or cabinetry. Apricot is also traditionally used in Southwestern architecture as an exterior color. You can match the outside color with the color in your kitchen, which makes the room look especially cohesive if it is attached to an exterior patio area.

#What factors should I consider when buying kitchen tongs? Seasoned Advice

What factors should I consider when buying kitchen tongs?

I consider kitchen tongs one of the most essential kitchen tools but due to a lot of moving around recently I no longer have a pair. Rather than just picking up a cheap pair at the corner store I figured I would ask the experts and get something worth holding onto this time. I'd like to know more about the following:

What material is best and why? I'm familiar with metal tongs but would there be any advantages to other materials such as wood?

I have some non-stick pans. If you recommend metal tongs, are there any available that have some kind of plastic on the tips or some other coating that would not damage the teflon? Cleaning would be a consideration. I don't want something that food is going to get stuck under.

What should I be looking for in a latching mechanism? I've seen types that you can just tip upside down ... Read more »

#3 Kid-Friendly Options For Kitchen Floors

by Meagan Francis | Posted 3 years ago

We are right in the middle of a complete kitchen renovation down to the floor studs! which means I ve been up to my eyeballs in home magazines, color samples and catalogs not to mention construction dust for the last week or so.

Most of the choices have come together pretty easily: we knew we wanted butcher block counters, open shelving, and pendant lights, for example. But not so easy? Choosing a material for our floors. There seem to be a zillion options, ranging from so-cheap-it-doesn t-seem-possible to outrageously expensive; from soft to hard, from dark to light, natural to man-made the array of choices had my head spinning.

We eliminated ceramic, granite, and porcelain tile, as well as most other stones and very hard surfaces, pretty quickly. Even though they can be quite budget-friendly, easy to care for ... Read more »

#3 Design Ideas for Your New Kitchen Splash-back

3 Design Ideas for Your New Kitchen Splash-back

We love those little spaces in every home that are wide open for free-form design, such as kitchen splash-backs. Thanks to their prominent location, a little something "special" in a splash-back can serve to draw your whole kitchen together.

Here are some of our favorite kitchen splash-back ideas.

We love the way the lighter, varied hues of this mosaic (below) play against the darker, more uniform HanStone Quartz countertop in Winter Riviera .

Here we see checkered tan and brown glass tiles play against stark Bright White Staron countertops.

It's usually not budget-friendly or hygienic to install mosaic tiles over a large area, so the kitchen backsplash is the perfect place to put in a statement piece without breaking the bank.

We especially recommend this if you're going through the process of pulling up and rep ... Read more »

#6 Tips to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Tile

The kitchen is the one room in the house that can have several different types of tiles, in different applications, and they all will enhance your kitchen beautifully.  When choosing kitchen tile for your home consider where it is going to go first.  Glossy tile that goes on a wall will not be the same as flooring tile. Flooring tile has to be safe to walk on, and a glossy floor kitchen tile could be unsafe under foot.  Here are tips for choosing the right application and type of tile for your kitchen.

1.) Determine where the tile will be installed:

Before you select a material you will need to decide what surface the tile will be applied.  Tile can be placed as a backsplash behind a stove, or on the wall to the underside of the upper cabinets. Tile is a popular countertop material, and can also be used on the kitchen floor.

2.) Decipher the difference between ‘tiles’: ... Read more »

#6 Factors to Consider When Choosing Handles for Your Kitchen Cabinets

Here's how to select handles for your kitchen cupboards that are big on style but functional, too

1. QUALITY AND FUNCTIONALITY

When choosing handles it is important to make sure they are good quality and are well designed. Think about how many times you open and close the cabinet doors and drawers in your kitchen. You will want your handles to be as comfortable as they are stylish.

ladyrob1

Am sure I've written about this before but since the topic is handles thought I'd contribute here as well.

So right Barbara! Too many choices make choosing handles a chore rather than fun!

I've procrastinated for so long until my dog, yes, dog, chose the drawer handles for me. as in NONE! Nothing so innovative as hidden lips or indentations or press-to-open options. but of necessity, something economical.
