Cheap Kitchen Countertop Fixes | eHow

Many people desire an attractive kitchen, but a kitchen renovation can be very expensive. Although a kitchen renovation can be a costly project, there are a few quick fixes that can inexpensively renew the look of your countertops. Painting over laminate or tile, tiling over laminate countertops or adhering inexpensive plywood to existing countertops are all affordable ways to spruce up a kitchen.

Laminate countertops provide a smooth, easy-to-paint surface. Lightly sand the surface, using 120-grit sandpaper to remove any sheen. Wash the laminate, using trisodium phosphate (also known as TSP and found in home improvement stores), then rinse to remove the TSP. When the surface is dry, apply melamine paint using a high-density foam roller for the best results. Apply three thin coats for the best coverage. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for drying time.

Remove the sink and faucet from countertop and sand well, using an orbital or palm sander and 50-grit sandpaper. You want to rough up the surface for better adhesion, but don't gouge or damage the laminate. Plan your tile placement. Begin tiling from the sink, using a latex modified thinset adhesive applied with a trowel for a thin, even coat. Place tiles down, using spacers to maintain equal distance between tiles. After tiling apply grout, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Prepare a tile countertop for painting by sanding thoroughly. You must create a rough surface so the paint will adhere properly. Once sanded, apply a super-adherent primer, found in home improvement stores and designed for difficult-to-paint surfaces. When dry, apply two coats of oil paint for the best results. Avoid using the painted tile for a week to allow the paint to dry thoroughly and cure properly.

Remove your sink and clean the counter thoroughly. Affix a sheet of 1/4-inch plywood, cut to the size of your existing countertops, using high grab construction adhesive for panelling. Roll the surface (a rolling pin works) and weigh it down with something heavy, such as piles of books. Trim the edges with solid wood, fill the seams with silicone, apply the silicone around sink, then apply satin urethane or acrylic varnish. Be sure the pipes beneath your sink can accommodate the additional 1/4 inch of height.
